Phil coulda just resurrected her via the console. But then again, there's something earnest to be said about the way he's playing. Most Skyrim PC players, use the console way too much, almost to the point they ruin the experience for themselves. Sometimes it can't be helped though. I had some quest items which got stuck in my inventory, and had to use the console to remove them.

I dont get how the traps work D: I'm playing on master and my followers ignore the traps 99% of the time.. they just fall to the ground and get up after their health has regenerated.

I've had them die a couple of times from the same trap they previously couldn't die from, just the location of the trap changed..

HOW TO BRING ILLIA BACK TO LIFE:

1.Go back to her dead body.

2. Press ~ (the button under Esc) to open console commands.

3.Once in CC click on Illia's body and type resurrect and press enter. (Take all her stuff b4 hand otherwise it will be gone)

4.Exit CC and she will get up but most likely when u speak to her the 'follow me' dialogue will be missing.

5.So go into CC again and type 'player.setrelationshiprank 4b22e 4' without the quotation marks and press enter.

6.Exit CC and speak to her.

As for a new follower, the Azura shrine lady is great, so is Marcurio in the Bee and Barb in Riften.  If you do the Companions quests in whiterun you could get Aela, who is a great archer.

I have got the weirdest quest! Some dude in whiterun dare me to a drinking contest, got all drunk, then somehow ended up all the way to the north west. On my way back to whiterun found out most weird things I did last night, ended up in Morvunskar, I didnt complete the maze, because I was teleported to another dimension and got a Sanguine Rose as reward. Which summons this stan dude in his transformed mode.

The best follower to pick IMO is the chick from the Azura quest that you recently did. She uses lightning spells and some others from the destruction magic tree and every time she goes to fight she summons a flame atronach, AND if it's a longer fight she summons a frost giant too. So basically you have 3 followers by picking her.

BTW. you can resurrect Illiya by bringing up the console, clicking on her body once and typing in resurrect, but make sure to take all items of her before doing that.
