@OllieTheBum8182:He still has them, but he stopped using them because they're incredibly heavy and made his back hurt when he got older. He had the Electrical Guitar Company build him a semi-hollow aluminum guitar based on them that he used during the reunion tours.
Amazing to have this. The finest 2 gigs I ever witnessed: Jesus Lizard 1991. (Underworld in London). Similar set to this. 20 songs back to back. Unforgettable. No other 90s band had such a stunning opening as Then Comes Dudley followed by One Evening. As seminal as early live Birthday Party.
they f'in crushed continents. anyone who is drawn to this video wants to learn. follow these guy's and the butthole surfers and you wil be fine. also study polvo and helll......the world is your oyster.
@RedHotChiliPrimus probably, but not completely. Listen to "Third from the Sun" by Prong. The intro is the heaviest seconds ever recorded (studio version - you find it on YouTube as "Prong" without sing title).
@ZackTaylor1992 I'm lucky enough to have been able to see them at this time while I was in high school. This band is still one of the most powerful acts I've ever witnessed.
@ZackTaylor1992 Not quite as good, but you might like Made Out of Babies. They're heavily influenced by The Jesus Lizard, except with a girl on vocals, and they kinda mix some Neurosis in there. The Ruiner is an awesome album. I think Steve Albini produced another one of their records.
Joe Zawinul wrote Great Expectations. Miles Davis is renowned for putting his name on others' work. Jesus Lizard is one of the best live bands I've ever seen. This will be my only post on the subject.
I think a lotta musicians take something old and put a new spin on it. Even Dylan admitted Hendrix' 'Watchtower' was way better than his. I like Miles 'G. Expectations' too but these guys sleaze the riff into total gloriousness and that bass line rulez
I'm sure they would like to admit it, but as soon as they would do that, then Miles Davis' record company would be looking for some royalties and let's face it, they sure as hell don't deserve any. I'm sure Miles Davis 'borrowed' stuff from music he loved and neglected to mention it to the record company. Nobody is entirely original.
There's always been a heavy jazz influence in most of Denison's work, so it's not surprising.
This isn't a band looking for pop success, so this track is more of a homage to Davis' work rather than a straight rip for the sake of doing so or for gold records.
Well, then go look for one. If you're going to tell others to read a book and get educated, then do a bit of research yourself.
Besides, I know YOU KNOW the difference between graciously borrowing a riff and a total rip for pop chart purposes. This isn't the latter. Stop being stubborn. :-)
"YOU KNOW the difference between graciously borrowing a riff "
Graciously borrowing ? It's the main theme of their song, and it's ripped off period. You won't be able to prove the contrary it's too obvious and in your face.... graciously lol.. :)
Besides, who cares if a guy from Italy thinks this is rip off.
You stop being a stubborn fan and enjoy your music, but you'll have to live with the idea others might like it less :-)
It's not about loyalty, it's about understanding music, what is a homage and what is a rip.
I tried to explain that it was more of a homage than a rip, & that there is very much a difference between the two, you say no
If you don't think there is a difference between the two, then you shouldn't really be telling anyone else on here to read a book or to read up on music history, and if you're not willing to accept someone else making a counter then you need to let us enjoy this band in peace.
"I tried to explain that it was more of a homage than a rip, you say no"
Cause you are, evidently , wrong and you feel you're right no matter what. An homage is a little musical phrase/module put in a whole different piece, with a different main theme. Here, again, the MAIN THEME of the piece is taken from a less known Miles album.
Can I say what I think or you're gonna whine forever?
Just listen to your band in peace, but you can't teach me things you don't know. Settled? I hope so.
Holy shit. The jesus lizard were the best live band I've ever seen. i've seen them maybe 5 times. i actually saw them in january 3 months before this show in the same club. for a second i thought maybe they had the date wrong. u are right it's the same riff. whether it was intentional or not remains to be seen. lot's of alcohol and other substances were very prevalent in those days. as a musician and song writer myself he may have subconciously done it. or maybe he just stole it. feeling duped.
Who cares, I don't think Miles Would bother actually. If we would get concerned over every single copied melody in the world then we would all get stomache diseases and die from anxiousness and anger.
I play in a group and we spend tons of time inventing new shit. If we justr ipped up awesome stuff nobody listened to... we would be better off right?
I say being inspired or playing something similar is negligible, copy and paste still give me the creeps.
Expecially from a group that has a certain "attitude" and shit. I can understand a little provincial gorup doing it, but not peopel with a little success.
Thanks for uloading BongHitBrian. I was at this show and this video brought back a lot of memories of The Jesus Lizard and DC Space, now sadly a Starbucks.
That made me think of CBGB's up here in NYC and how's it's a boutique. Barf. Now that I think of it most of the places I've seen them in NYC have closed. :-(
I used to have posters of these guys on my wall and now I am one of them. Just goes to show Dreams do come true! Seriously Saw these guys when I was 17 for the first time, I am now 36 and in that time I started a band played with them And many other really cool bands, broke up and have become friends with two of them And they really are fucking nuts!
Shits in the face of whoever thinks you gotta be a show-off to be a good guitarist.
And Yow is just in the zone here. I mean he's always possessed anyway:P Great stuff. He's up there with the Devils. Jim Morrison, Hendrix, Iggy, Jello, Cobain, Gira, etc.
nothing is heavier than this shit. Denison's riff is one of the biggest I've ever heard - maybe his most memorable - he really makes you wait for the vocals to build suspense. and when the vocals finally show up they are classic. thanks for posting.
Best f-ing rhythm section ever...and Yow is always great live! Saw them at Lollapalooza in 94(?) and again a few years later at the Stone Pony with only like 2 dozen people there....beyond awesome! :-)
Saw them in 97 at the Roxy in LA, saw them in 98 at the Whiskey and in 94 in Michigan. I snuck up to the rooms after the show at the whiskey and told Mac, "You don't know me, but a big fan." He gave me a beer and between the jack that was being passed around and since I was already snookered, life was good backstage at a TJL show.

You must be one of those guys that think they're cool cause they listen to underground stuff.
But then they get pissed cause they have been ripped off. You're a good laugh.
Again, listen to "Great Expectations" by Miles Davis. These guys actually copied it.
How cool they are! Really...
And, no , you get fucked, kid, read some books, get educated, grow a brain, or get lost forever.
