I work in customer service and just as a piss take, I'm gonna serve customers I sign up Sardines and pretzels whilst going through the contract paperwork. And hopefully they eat it the same way Tom Hanks did in the movie.LMAO! Only joking.. couldn't do it but hell it'd be funny. This scene and the scene when the brother doctor comes out of the room and his shadow make him out to be a freakin giant but when revealed he's just a tny lil man are the funniest imo. Love the movie! Love the 80's!
My daughter and I bought sardines and pretzels as an occasional snack for years ... (sards in mustard sauce,+ regular pretzels)..+we gave a"set" to a horse farm proprietor whom we found loved "The Burbs." Lines from this have provided more light moments than I can count for me and my two now-adult kids. I wore my video out years ago. I sat through it prob. fifty times. I have the old sleeve for it w/ Tom Hanks in his bathrobe on the cover displayed in a corner of my living room.
Every time I watch this classic movie, I always think to myself "this actually looks good" I wouldnt mind eating that if it was served as a hors-d'oeuvres, they just added some squishy sound effects to make it sound more disgusting then it really is..

@QueenSemiramis I agree - I remember watching Tom Hanks eating the sardine and the funniest bit was seeing the old guy just staring at him. Nevertheless, I did start laughing uncontrollably at about 15 seconds into this clip - it's brightened up my day!
The way Reuben is looking at Ray while he eats that stuff is hilarious. I wonder how many takes they had to do, because I know the actors were probably laughing.
we wore out our copy of the Burbs- must have played it 50 times. we now recite whatever we possibly can from it quite frequently, wherever possible..it's great (free)therapy

@greeneyedsteamengine-hunt for them at your favorite grocer- Port Clyde band Bumblebee brand are on shelves where I live- dear daughter is in SoCalif and cannot find them!! so i lovingly stuff a few tins in the occasional box.. then, there are hot sauce ones..but she prefers mustard.. ah yezz..buzzing flies+gurgling sardine-time slop noises- this combo can even mend any broken heart....long live The Burbs.. (with apologies for taking the LORD's name in vain-There go the bleep-bleep brownies!!!
