  • We watched this movie at my school, I really enjoyed it.

  • i saw this on tv not long ago. and i only ended up watching half of the half towards the end. made me cry.

  • The grandfather is such a chauvenist asshole towards Paikia. He really pisses me off. Especially since he accused Paikia being bad luck for the whales, but no. The whales felt Paikia's pain and they needed her and the asshole was blind to see that. Paikia almost died because of her grandfather's mistreament and discouragement. Thumbs up if you agree.

  • this movie made me so sad! i seriously walked out of the theater crying because i thought she had died. my sister had to tell me the ending later. this movie also really made me want to be maori! oh well...

  • awesome beautiful movie, I love it because it depicts the culture change with strong scenes...although I'm not familiar with the particular culture, I can relate just a bit, as we all have experienced through our lives the harsh reality of culture shock.

  • lol..its not a boy her name is keshia castle-hughes..paki is her name in the movie also..im not to sure if she got an oscar for the movie but she got a node for it..!!..its a great movie and great actress and actors for sure..!!

  • lol..its not a boy her name is keshia castle-hughes..paki is her name in the movie also..im not to sure if she got an oscar for the movie but she got a node for it..!!..its a great movie and great actress and actors for sure..!!

  • Actually the person was probably referring to the boy that was in the scene. Where he is trying to teach her how to use that stick thing.

  • I think Paka was saying "She was a taiaha." A fighting stick used by only men and young boys. The boy trying to teach Paikea how to use it, his name is Hemi.

  • who is the boy??? What is his name, on and off screen?

  • kcus uoy

  • How DARE Australia try and steal yet another Kiwi talent and claim her their own!!! Every successful kiwi the barstards claim to be a skipp!

  • the aussies and the newzealnders are like cousins lol

im a maori myself so i should no dis sorta stuff lol

  • am fairly open minded about things but in my travels would never consider aussies like my cousins, more like inlaws, I know they are there, but I avoid contact as much as possible!

  • i cried when i 1st saw this its sooooo sad!!!

but yeah a good story line asweel

  • Her koro is a butthead. I'm glad mine wasn't like that, lol.

  • What do the Maori lyrics in the beginning of this video mean? Anyone?

  • It's a karanga, a ceremonial call. The grandmother is beckoning her mokopuna (granddaughter and her contingent) to come forward onto the marae under the mana of their chiefly ancestors. The mokopuna is responding to her by asking her to call to them as the fruition of their ancestors.

  • Thanks, mate! :)

  • You're most welcome :)

  • i thought she was a boy..lolzzzzzzzz

  • Three great films from new zealand;"the Piano"."once were warriors",Whale rider".

  • mana Taumaunu is so cute he is Hemi the one in the second clip in the blue shirt

  • I think I'd like this movie....i havent seen it yet. I live in NZ, so it'll be pretty easy to purchase....is it worth watching though?

  • LOVED DIS MOVIE!

  • a most wonderful film

i'm not ashamed to say i blubed like a baby that girl cracked me up a great little film

  • where is this place that they live? is it some sort of religion? if it is, what is it?

  • wow this is a gr8 movie!!!i so want to watch this!!my frendz 4rm dubai think its from fiji since they'v never seen any island culture like this b4 xcept where i cum from (fiji):Ploool

  • This film is fantastic

the grandfather made me pissed i wish i would smack him around the head with those staffs

that'll teach him not to hurt her!!!!!!emotionally

  • You are really off. You don't hit your grandfather in the head! He is upset because according to tradition, a male is supposed to be chief and she is a girl. America and most other countries have the same sexist ideas and are not better than these people.

  • Actually that doesn't apply to this particular tribe, which is more matriarchal than patriarchal. And most other tribes who would tend to be more patriarchal still had chieftainesses as well (a prime example is the late Tainui queen Te Ataairangikaahu). These tribes, however, are not sexist. Just because female roles differ to mens does not make them subordinate.

  • Good comment hineauahi, but my words still goes. The grandfather in the movie seems to want a male as chief, and I don't think I have to comment about American sexism and racism.

  • Yep the movie certainly does say that, so does the book, and it grates on the nerves of a lot of Ngati Porou over here that Witi took such liberties. I don't know enough about American culture (or the many indigenous cultures of America, if that's what you're referring to) to judge them as sexist or not, but I'm often wary to do so because Maori cultural practices are often judged as sexist by those who don't really understand the holistic sense in which it works.

  • Since the movie was seen by Americans they could have seen it and thought, "Hey, that guy is attacking the "glass ceiling" and "good ol' boy network" in America" In other words, the film seems to go beyond the Ngati Porou people, I think. Women are thought of as less everywhere, right?

  • Imo the universality of the films message is no more or less than the message of any other film, from which a more general moral or theme could be derived. It is still a misrepresentation of Ngati Porou culture.

  • Yes, the universal theme is the point I wanted to make. Now that I think about it films have misrepresented Native Americans, African Americans, Asians and others. I am glad that you are clearing up things about your culture for those who know little of it as other minorities have sometimes done. Have a good day.

  • (I think my last post accidentally went to the top of the thread). Another example is the karanga, (at the beginning of this clip). Though formal speeches may be restricted, this is a more powerful communicative mode anyway, as it awakens the spirits and communicates to them at the same time as the living and this practice can only be done by women because of the unique power they are believed to possess. Without a woman, you cannot go onto a marae and no speeches would follow.

  • And I must say I also have to disagree with your final statement about women considered as "less", as well. That's too simplistic for me. Take the fact that women are forbidden near buildings or near a waka canoe as they're being built. Many look at that and judge it as subordination. In reality it's a great compliment, as women are deemed so powerful that their presence will distract the attention of the gods you have invoked for protection and you will be placed in danger.

  • No, when I made that statement "women are considered less" I was referring, not to your culture, but that in America, women are paid less for the same work, mistreated in every country according to one report, the glass ceiling, old boy network, and other things.

  • Oh I see, thanks for clarifying.(had to log in under my sis's id, mine stopped working....) Yep films are great for storytelling but they're also responsible for a lot of misrepresentation.... anyways you have a great day too....

  • this is one of the most amazing movies i have ever watched. absolutely amazing..

  • It is an amazing movie--makes me bawl every time. Keisha Castle Hughes in incredible. Haven't read the book yet.

  • my uncle wrote the book

  • it fucking sucked, school made me read the fucking shit

  • i hear that homie....

    same shit here....

  • then your uncle did Ngati Porou a disservice, in my opinion.

  • we studied this film @ skool!!

  • I loved this movie and that little girl.

  • acctually the whale are humanotronic, which means they are functioned by humans sitting in the belly of the fiberglass whales. i learnt this at school because we are studying it.

  • fcuk man yuu beople'sz make urselves s0ud braiiny y dnt yuu ackd lyke tru maorii'sz nd say da bl0ody whale'sz r fake man lol'sz

  • nd @ least Hemi'sz bettah dan daht old fcuken paka

  • tamaiti tikotiko koe.... hoki atu koe ki te marae, hei whaia to rangatiratanga.

  • that my dear is how true Maori sound, not spewing the filth and poor English that you have. We are a race of great oraters, our tipuna took pride in our eloquence - so quit feeding the negative sterotype and return to your rightful roots.

  • typo - Orators even.

  • we watched that moovie for school, realy its beautiful :)

  • love this movie we watched it in our sixth grade class

  • the whale stranding is not real there all Machinical and the main whale was pulled along at that speed it's called animaltronics

  • Anybody knows if the wales in the beach are real??how did they make that scenes...

  • No they are not there fake

  • In the close up scenes, they're animatronic fakes, and in long shots where you see a bunch of them on screen they were added in with CGI.

  • Wonderful film, amazing preformances.

  • is the girl supposed to be Maori?

  • Yes. The actress is half Maori.

  • oh ok. i wasnt sure because i thought she was Austrailian..

  • Keisha was born there, actually, but she is a New Zealand citizen and talks with a Kiwi accent:)

  • ok thanks, im not asking out of ignorance, but plain curiosity, do kiwis and Aussies have the same accent?

  • What you think ? their two different countries.

  • well like i said, i didn't know. People always associate Austrailians with New Zealanders, and their accents sound very similar to me. its hard to tell when you're not from either of the countries...

  • Ok cool. But accents change every couple a hundred miles. Why should this be any diffrent.

  • That's easy to answer! To you, evidentally yes, we do have the same accent. To us, no. Just like to us most Americans sound the same but no doubt they can all tell each others accents.

  • i like when she sing in the end :)

  • loved this movie!!!

  • European arrangement for silverware. Intriguing..Wanna watch the whole show, sometime.

  • lol@intriguing.......consindering new zealand was colonised by the english hundreds of years ago and this movie is set in modern times....its not that intriguing.......

  • Well, Silverware itself is intriguing. What with the knives laid out on a certain side of your body...Imagine if you had two knives :) one to eat and one to defend :).

  • hemis such a cutie pie ^_^ @--%---

  • hemi is so cute ^_^

  • it was a accident from her 'HUSBAND' hahaha

  • Who cares if she's pregnant, as long as she's happy, it's all great news. Find something else to do rather than spend your time bagging out someone who's probably much younger than you are.

Besides, it'd be great to restrict the comments to those concerning the movie only.

  • The point is new tradition for a new age with respect for old ways, I asssume.

Course you could also say the point is : To make a box office hit. / or / Whales love being rode like horseyz.

  • can someone tell me the most important point in the movie please?

i need to do a project

  • What a little fuckin' tramp! Pregnant at 16! I remember everyone treating her like the little girl that she was at the Academy Awards, a couple of years ago. She's way to young to be having sex! She's gonna be one of those actresses that gets married 10 times and has 8 kids.Mark my word! What's next, Dakota Fanning! What a little dirty slut!!!

  • who are you to judge? Are you perfect? And why do you care anyway? I respect her. A letter person would have had an abortion and hid it from the world.

  • yea ur rite i was really surprised to hear the newz... she aint married to the baby's father yet as well and she's 17

  • all time fav.movie.<3It.

  • great movie! rdangelo is a Ridiculous person Unrealistic, yet completely predictable. Horrible.

  • She is the youngest person to be nominated for best actress

  • Ridiculous premise, and poorly executed. Unrealistic, yet completely predictable. Horrible.

  • Keisha Looks Pretty

  • how sweet. maoriz 4 lyf ae. xxx sami

  • I don't think so.

  • love this movie. I love the scene where she rides the whale

  • terrible

  • I watched it to see what all the hype was about. And everyone was right. This is a classic film.

  • This movie is a classic!

  • Yes, but it sure doesn't get the attention it deserves. Its article on Wikipedia is tiny, and there are only a few videos concerning it here on YouTube, with only a few thousand views. (sighs)

  • I love this movie <3
