It really shouldn't matter whether or not "tax cuts" for the rich are going to be used to boost the economy or not. If you want to boost the economy then cut some redundant expenses or legalize and tax drugs, or god forbid, cut the military budget... do not try to fool people by changing the language of the argument. Saying "tax cuts" or "giving money to the wealthy" implies that the government is somehow giving the rich money. They aren't. The rich already pay more than their share.
Even if they paid the same percentage in taxes than everyone else (they already pay more than this), they'd be paying more. Say what you are actually saying without using bullshit language trickery. He also did many liberal things like increased Mexican immigration, fought for civil rights, and fought against nuclear proliferation. @mattpytlak It's been proven OVER and OVER raising tax's reduces spending which in turn reduces the amout of tax's collected. A few targeted hikes would be ok, for example we should also raise the SSI contrabution limit so that high earners contribute aproportional amount to the system. We should means test SSI and Medicare and if your rich you don't get it That would save billions every yr but raising tax's on small bussines during this economy would trigger another wave of layoffs.

@mattpytlak Most small businesses are owned by a single individual. All the income of said business is considered the income on the owner. Thus if a small business with 10 employees makes 600k after paying payroll, utilities, rent, insurance, advertising etc the owner pockets 75 or 80k he would still be forced to pay 3% on the 600k NOT the 75-80 he actually made. So he would likely have to let go of an employe, pay all of them less or pay 20k out of his pocket meaning he now makes 55k not 75k
@mattpytlak As for the studies I can't point to them directly but I did take several economics classes in college and that point was stressed. Basically if the price of item x goes up people buy less of it. Tax's make the price of things go up so people spend less. That's why the cost of cigarettes is so high in NYC. Bloomberg hates smoking, he can't ban it but he wants to deter it so he adds a $4 tax to encourage people to buy less of it.
See, I think one of the problems with politics in this country can be seen here. Soon enough (and possibly already), everyone will forget that Obama even made the compromise, including Olbermann, because it will never be brought up again. He forgot to mention the payroll tax reduction for the middle class, the repealing of Don't Ask Don't Tell, and the 9/11 responders act. It really shouldn't matter whether or not "tax cuts" for the rich are going to be used to boost the economy or not. If you want to boost the economy then cut some redundant expenses or legalize and tax drugs, or god forbid, cut the military budget... do not try to fool people by changing the language of the argument. Saying "tax cuts" or "giving money to the wealthy" implies that the government is somehow giving the rich money. They aren't. The rich already pay more than their share.

A few targeted hikes would be ok, for example we should also raise the SSI contrabution limit so that high earners contribute aproportional amount to the system. We should means test SSI and Medicare and if your rich you don't get it That would save billions every yr but raising tax's on small bussines during this economy would trigger another wave of layoffs.

@mattpytlak Most small businesses are owned by a single individual. All the income of said business is considered the income on the owner. Thus if a small business with 10 employees makes 600k after paying payroll, utilities, rent, insurance, advertising etc the owner pockets 75 or 80k he would still be forced to pay 3% on the 600k NOT the 75-80 he actually made. So he would likely have to let go of an employe, pay all of them less or pay 20k out of his pocket meaning he now makes 55k not 75k

@mattpytlak As for the studies I can't point to them directly but I did take several economics classes in college and that point was stressed. Basically if the price of item x goes up people buy less of it. Tax's make the price of things go up so people spend less. That's why the cost of cigarettes is so high in NYC. Bloomberg hates smoking, he can't ban it but he wants to deter it so he adds a $4 tax to encourage people to buy less of it.

See, I think one of the problems with politics in this country can be seen here. Soon enough (and possibly already), everyone will forget that Obama even made the compromise, including Olbermann, because it will never be brought up again. I liked the "____ since Mission Accomplished" thing because he didn't let it go, but important stuff like this gets let go all the time, and soon enough people will either forget it happened or won't care anymore.

He forgot to mention the payroll tax reduction for the middle class, the repealing of Don't Ask Don't Tell, and the 9/11 responders act. Obama got like 8 things for us in exchange for some tax cuts, i think it was a pretty good deal. These are all good things(except the bush tax cuts maybe). The only reason they are an issue is because it adds to the already huge debt. Well it wouldn't be so high if we didn't spend more on defense than the rest of the world combined.
