I am surprise that it wasn't mentioned the biggest plus for the Sony that the Kindle dosn't offer is the ability to download free e-books from Public Locations i.e. the Library!
I had a Kindle for Xmas ( love to bits). I downloaded loads of free books. I'm a bit of a Churchill nut and a mate of mine recommended a book called What Churchill Would Do, I have avoided buying books so far (no point with so much free stuff) but it was dirt cheap so I thought I would give it a go. It was a really great book, loads of war stuff and some interesting and different business advice. Not the usual drivel you get . Worth checking out when you get a chance.
people who put giant crosses on their chests are usually extremely dumb in regards to religion... big surprise.. i blame it on social networking and pop culture... (off topic comment)
I've had the Sony PRS-700 for about 2 years and couldn't love it more! I don't find it has a glare of a 'fuzzy' screen?? I don't use the backlight, because I have ...you know, lamps. As for the connectivity, I don't care if it connects to the net, as who actually BUYS the books anymore??? anything can be converted using "Calibre" and you're good to go. I've been so happy with it, not a moment's trouble and countless hours of fun! Anything that encourages READING is ok by me!
@Generationfaithful because it's a symbolic object; jesus sacrificed thyself for mankind's sins and died on the cross, the cross reminds people of christ's selflessness for men. in reality, that's all bullshit. people should worship love for one another, not some symbol or idol or hatred that my god is the true god nonsense...
what the fuck? did you guys fire your graphic designer a few days short of the video finishing or something? why the fuck were most of the scores either 4.7 or 3.0? this completely eliminates credibility. that and saying features were "juicy" and "sexy". adults would be buying ereaders, not 12 year olds.
BBC Click did show the E Ink Corporation working on colour eInk and the refresh rate is fast enough to play good quality video on it (they demo'ed it playing the Horton Hears a Who film). So I might just wait for that but buy then todays eReaders maybe dirt cheap and that may tempt me seen as I'm a late adopter :P
@elena3155 In my opinion it doesn't matter too much except the pricing and the eReaders USP seen as the majority are so similar because they all set out to do one main task, which is read books on. If you want just plain simplicity, good pricing and no fuss then a standard Amazon Kindle or Sony Pocket Reader should do fine. If your willing to pay more for touch screen technology then the Sony PRS-600/700 and Barnes and Noble Nook suit you there. If you want a large screen Kindle DX or iRiver.
i think you should be comparing kindle and Barnes and Noble's Nook. The sony ereader isn't good at all and both the nook and kindle have good features. this video is a year and a half old...
For those of you that want to know more about the specs they actually compare them on the Sony website. I did all of my research and still ended up with the Kinle.
Heres the thing I can't decide on... Sony's e books you can buy any where, but the kindle's is wifi, so you can buy anywhere without a store... SOMEONE HELP ME!! everyone who commented on this is biased... (I want to buy it as a gift...)
@GallusSapien Not really, it just constitutes as design and how aesthetically pleasing it is just like many Apple devices are well designed and how they get praise for that.
@SJGster I'm sorry. I looked a little deeper and it turns out you can't because Amazon doesn't sell ebooks in the usual epub or pdf format. They made their own format so they could be all elitist. But you can get ebooks anywhere else you want that isn't being a dick about it.
@joeandray Yes, but this review only mentioned that the kindle had one. Either they're being biased, or they didn't read the manual. Kind of unfair not to mention something like that.
you're mentally retarded. You can download any ebook you want to the sony e reader. it is not "exclusive" just to the sony e reader store. get your facts right. - 5 stars for a biased review.
seriously, no one should be buying ebooks anymore. You can find almost everything you need for download, that's why sony is better, because you just add the ebooks in the memory and you're done.
They didnt factor in cost. PRS700 has never costed me a dime for content. tons of free books online through google books. Kindle charges for everything. Sorry but cost is important to me so Sony wins this fight.
I keep hearing people say that these things are the future of books. I seriously disagree. I know many people of all different ages who own these things, and every single one of them says that they would still rather have an actual book that they can physically hold than this. There's just something about books, especially for those of us who love to read and read constantly. However, I do think the Apple iPad is a contender in the future (1st gen is always bad) solely because it can do so much.
@MonroeComplex, if all I want to do is read books, I don't care about the iPad and it's millions of useless apps. The iPad is expensive enough as it were, and stocking it with cool apps will cost you $1000+ in the long run. You can't read from an iPad outdoors and you can't stare at the screen for 2-3 hours if you need to study/read for that long because the LCD screen is harsh on your eyes. E-ink all the way!
@CertainAsTheSun - This is why I said "1st gen is always crap". These things may change. And if they don't, that's also why I said, "iPad MIGHT be a contender". I get what you're trying to say though.
@CABCCBAC And I've used one, and I say he's full of shit. Doesn't hurt my eyes, visible in sunlight, doesn't cost $1000, most apps are free. You're full of shit. And by the way, all the upcoming Android slates suck.
Both allow you to put your own books. The sony readers tend to have better compatibility though, in terms of the different types of files it can read. Sony can do .doc (Microsoft Word) files, the kindle can not. That is the only major difference i've seen so far between the two, both do .pdf/.epub files.
I personally own a Sony reader pocket edition (for $149.99! <--best price so far) It has the smallest size screen from all the rest of the other ebook readers on the market.
eBook readers are open or closed. The Sony reader and the iPad both support the .epub format which IS open. Kindle doesn't! See my fast tutorial about the .epub format. It is a deep-level description of the format. Go ahead and paste this on the end of the video address in your Web browser: vvGrFZdSDww
@mackawy - How do you figure? Are you basing your opinion on just how much of Apple marketing you've bought into, or have you actually tried out the product? Glare off of the iPad is horrendous, the feel is clumsy, and the price is ridiculous for what is essentially an oversized iPhone!
@stoneycreek7, first, I didn't "buy into" any Apple marketing, I'm very able of forming my own opinions. second, my opinion is solely based on how BAD both Kindle and sony reader are. ANY new product with half decent screen will kill both of them, Third, Comparing prices to the Kindle the iPad is not that expensive.
Now how did you figure that the glare is horrendous and the feel is clumsy? did you buy the iPad?
Hey, the kindle is way sexier than the Sony. The sony looks like the black version of Kindle 1! And duh, sony's NEEDS a case bc its touch screen. I have an aversion to touch screens. And if u want a case so bad, buy one!
They totally dismiss the Sony backlight...twice!!!
I love the backlight. It might not be great for finding your keys in the dark, but if you want to read in bed, which I do a lot, the backlight works great.
I'm not sure why they're so dismissive of this feature. To me, its a huge deal.
My Kindle is working perfectly in Brazil. Down here, we use 3G and I can purchase and download any book from anywhere. And I don't need to pay for the Internet connection. Amazon Whispernet pays for that! Amazing!
some of the categories should not hold as much weight as others. I mean come on the looks are not near as important as the actually reading experience, the whole reason for buying the darn thing lol
Disagree with the points for Wi-fi and 3g,do you think another bill for internet justifies ability to download a book while on the go?i personally don't think so.
I am Russian and i am not gonna use any of those stores,I download Russian books from the web and read them, and i don't chose from 100.000 it's more like millions.
@DimaKamyziak The Wi-FI is FREE. The only thing you pay for is the book you download. So, having the 3g is extremely convenient. It's easier than downloading on a PC (which I personally don't have) and then having to physically transfer it over through a USB.
Watch out amazon charger per mb for each conversion file of pdf , txt . It sucks ,is like you pay to amazon for each transfer of your digital camera . Sony is much better kindle because it has full support without charging it. Amazon is a usual partner with cnet , kindle will never lose in theirs review
@jjhjjff As long as it doesn't have a laser lense . . heh sorry. Old Sony. Every stereo I had that was sony crapped out pretty quick. Yet I won't buy headphones from anyone else. :P
The Sony reader software is available on Mac now. Go to the sony ebook website ebookstore.sony. com. But you don't even have to use it with the Sony reader, you can use any ebook library software.
True, but you're tied to the kindle store with that method. Using an ebook library you can buy an ebook from anywhere and put it into your ebook folder to add it to the library. Sony ebook readers seem to be a more open standard, which is highly unusual for Sony
The worst comparison,I've ever watched, from the tech point view. Where is the tech specs like battery life, gray level on screens and which of them reads more formats(PDF,txt and etc)? Ridicules
One notable feature about the Sony that was missed here is the intelligent page turn. Sony added a sensor to the touch screen that works with/without the stylus that will flip pages based on left to right, right to left movement. This feature makes reading from it very efficient. There is MAC software, and your books are portable via the smart media card....How did we miss those????
After waiting for the new Sony reader & weighing this new device against Kindle & others---& after viewing this showdown, I now conclude It's Time To Wait Some More Before Buying.
Among other considerations, the Sony appears too uncomfortable to read since I live with eyestrain so much already--don't need even more! Looks do matter but are last on my list. Sony usually makes beautiful things---like this VAIO AW laptop I'm typing on now. But build quality sucks.
@1bibaby i owned a sony reader but i recently switched to the kindle i like the kindle better, and the prices for new books are a lot cheaper for the kindle, but once the book is old the sony store lowers the price to match the kindle's
i just bought my first book for Sony 600, and it wasn't from Sony. I found the same book much cheaper at Kobobooks than anywhere else. Sure Amazon has a big selection, but with the Sony reader I can buy from anywhere and can borrow from libraries.
So agreed with the host. I am going to wait for this area of technology to get more competition before I purchase. Neither product is particularly enticing.
Seriously, what about battery power, durability, charging methods, memory? I really dont care how sexy my ebook is... I am not going to be fucking it.
both batteries last for ever they talked about both durability and memory and who cares how to charge it you plug the damn things into the wall like everything else!!

Amazon is a usual partner with cnet , kindle will never lose in theirs review

i would buy the Sony reader. I may be a bit exaggerating, but everything that Sony makes is perfect!

@jjhjjff As long as it doesn't have a laser lense . . heh sorry. Old Sony. Every stereo I had that was sony crapped out pretty quick. Yet I won't buy headphones from anyone else. :P

@dissectinglyrics hwy what can't u get.. which one, Sony or Kindle?
zortiz13 2 years ago
i cant get sony cuz its only on PC.
dissectinglyrics 2 years ago
dissectinglyrics,
The Sony reader software is available on Mac now. Go to the sony ebook website ebookstore.sony. com. But you don't even have to use it with the Sony reader, you can use any ebook library software.
arthmus01 2 years ago
even so, with the kindle, you can buy books right on it. which is a HUGE bonus.
dissectinglyrics 2 years ago
True, but you're tied to the kindle store with that method. Using an ebook library you can buy an ebook from anywhere and put it into your ebook folder to add it to the library. Sony ebook readers seem to be a more open standard, which is highly unusual for Sony
arthmus01 2 years ago
@dissectinglyrics it supports mac now. i have mac and i have the sony prs 600.

The worst comparison,I've ever watched, from the tech point view. Where is the tech specs like battery life, gray level on screens and which of them reads more formats(PDF,txt and etc)? Ridicules
slyroad 2 years ago
One notable feature about the Sony that was missed here is the intelligent page turn. Sony added a sensor to the touch screen that works with/without the stylus that will flip pages based on left to right, right to left movement. This feature makes reading from it very efficient. There is MAC software, and your books are portable via the smart media card....How did we miss those????
Johnsodd3 2 years ago
I love my Kindle 2 but I wish it had a touch screen like the Sony.

Great presentation, BRIAN!

I don't like the Keyboard on the Kindle. I'm going to wait until the next version.

I have heard that the font size of the personal pdf loaded in kindle cannot be changed ...is it true ??
And can we directly connect the kindle to PC & load the pdf to kindle to read ..

I think all the e-reader's are amazing, but one of my favorite e-reader is the Nook.
If your in any Barnes And Noble in the United States any book in that store is free to you, unless you step outside the store.

what do you mean? also is the wifi and 3g free to use like it is on the kindle 2?

what about book prices after you buy either one? which has better book prices?
1bibaby 2 years ago
@1bibaby i owned a sony reader but i recently switched to the kindle i like the kindle better, and the prices for new books are a lot cheaper for the kindle, but once the book is old the sony store lowers the price to match the kindle's
Asoue13 2 years ago
i just bought my first book for Sony 600, and it wasn't from Sony. I found the same book much cheaper at Kobobooks than anywhere else. Sure Amazon has a big selection, but with the Sony reader I can buy from anywhere and can borrow from libraries.

Woooooo! I got uk version of the sony prs-600 and it IS full MAC

So agreed with the host. I am going to wait for this area of technology to get more competition before I purchase. Neither product is particularly enticing.
