Can someone explain to me what the yellow car is supposed to do? It looks like a placeholder but after the tire change McQueen has to beat it...?

@CarefreeButterfly The race went under caution when McQueen blew a tire. That means the entire field slows and follows the pace car (which sets the slow caution pace). To avoid going a lap down, any cars that pit under caution need to get out of pit lane ahead of the pace car. It can be difficult because pit lane has a set speed limit that you can't exceed until you're out of that zone.

@FenwickHockey65 So if one car blows a tire, every car in the race has to slow down (and thus the opportunity to overtake other cars is frozen until the original car returns to the race)? And if they don't beat out the pace car, they lose a lap? Why do other cars have to slow down if another blows a tire? And lastly, beating the pace car then becomes a test of the pit crew's speed as opposed to the driver's, correct? Sorry for all the questions but your answers are very enlightening! :)

@CarefreeButterfly It depends. If the tire blows and leaves debris on the racetrack, then it will definitely go to caution so safety crews can remove the remnants of the tire. Sometimes the tire stays on the wheel and the driver can just bring it into the pits. In all honesty, McQueen shouldn't have gotten a caution in this, but hey, it's a movie. And yes, the cars have to fall in line and cannot pass (except for the one car closest to regaining the lead lap).

@CarefreeButterfly That car gets a free pass to get back on the lead lap (I think, I never really understood that rule). And yes, your pit crew has to be amazingly fast to get you back out before the pace car clears the pit lane exit.
