Nope, I'm a costume designer who loves old movies and the classics, I just find them usually more interesting than a lot (though not all) of what is put out currently. So yeah, maybe since I am in the business, I am an ad, of sorts......albeit an upaid ad, by a theatrical professional. I love my work!
Look and learn kids, this is how real talents used to do it! Still enchanting, decades later. Such elegance, such style, and Guetary makes it look effortless. This whole movie is 100% class, and this is the best part. Who among the new crowd could pull off such a great number.....no one I fear! Between Gershwin, Minelli, Kelley, Caron, and Oscar Levant, this is one gorgeous, witty movie. The costumes and sets are stunning. Rent the whole thing today!!!
@heb1114 - Thanks for the info! It's wonderful to see that this splendid performance is still appreciated by so many these days. So much class & polish, it's just not seen much any more.
I love this song and production number from "An American in Paris!" Anyone know what note Guetary hits at the end? How many tenors could do that?? And he holds that note for what seems like f-o-r-e-v-e-r! Stunning!!
@kelsowins I know, absolutely incredible!! He has to be one of the most naturally gifted tenors (without straining) I've ever heard. By the way, that last note is the B above middle C.
I can't walk up the two flights to my apartment without a) looking down them and b) tripping on at least one of them. This man's performance is extraordinary. Incredible balance. I wonder how many takes that took?
Come to think of it, this came out in the 1950's, right? Wouldn't that mean that they didn't have light sensors like we do now? Doesn't that mean that there was someone manually turning on the stair-light in sync with his foot? O.O That kinda adds a whole new level of awesome to this song.
@RandomPersimmon No, I think they just had spring switches under each step - 19th-century technology would have been sufficient. Anyway, if you mean light sensors that activate a circuit when a light beam is blocked, every chain grocery store had those on its doors when I was toddler, and I am now 71. Not everything was invented yesterday.

As close as we're going to get to seeing what the old Ziegfeld-style revues of Broadway were like.
