@poisenwell Well, I suppose you find no spiritual mystery in Buddhism either then? Just a matter-of-fact enlightenment path? I am not sure what you are referring to by using the word "mystery" here though, or if you know what a "mystery cult" is, as opposed to "mysticism" or just your average "crime mystery" etc. I have good reason to say that there may have been a mystery cult behind those stories, since they follow a similar initiation pattern as the classical mystery (="initiation") cults.
I bought the Andy Orchard 2011 version of "The Elder Edda: A Book of Viking Lore" and just started. Some time back, I got a sort of vision or realization of the Viking story telling link to the ancient history of Earth and that the Vikings knew and understood a bit more than we are supposed to learn today from our history lessons and it's truly joyfull to see your passion for the same subject.
Just read the English translation of the Prose Edda, I love it. The use of Kennings is such a strange way of writing. But the Kennings themselves are amazing, I wish we had more of the old religion preserved.
Thank you for the lovely lecture. I just finished Heimskringle The Norwegian Kings Saga and decIded that I should read the Edda. Your lecture has given me a wonderful start place.
@bcar41 What I am saying in this video is basically what you learn when you start to study old Norse and/or Norse paganism in university. About the sources. Of course my opinion that the Poetic Edda is a source to pre-Christian beliefs is a much disputed question, those historians of religion (like me) believe they are because of the many references to pagan practices, while others are more cautious as the Edda was not written down until after Christianity was introduced.
Intredasting. I want to buy this book, the Prose Edda, if it is translated somewhere into English...
