This is the greatest study in facial expressions that exists: Mika's family confidently congratulating one another prematurely, Mika's anguished look as he misses the 10-pin, Mika's family exchanging guarded glances after the miss (don't even think about talking to Daddy Mika tonight, Girls!!!), Duke's look of disbelief and then exuberance. I missed 3 ten pins today and I was super-pissed-off each time. I feel for Mika.
I never know when Mika's ball is getting hung up on his thumb. So often it appears it's coming off tight but it always delivers. That clearly came off tight. That's no way to lose a tournament and between Norm Duke, Mika and Walter Ray....there can't be any tougher opponent.
Dude...costed him the title 1st & on top of that a boatload of extra money. He can whine all he wants. It sucks. & he didn't blame anyone else but himself, so he's not a poor sport or unsportsman like. Human beings are allowed to blow off steam in such circumstances. Even pro bowlers on TV. & i agree Norm is a class act. I have met him. Awesome person. Actually i've met Mika too. Super cool and approachable also.
The 10 pin is the hardest single pin to hit for right-handed bowlers. I've developed a system for hitting it consistently, but there are times where I slip-up and overthrow it. That's all Mika did, nothing to be ashamed about. It cost him the title, yes, but it's not like he missed the easiest shot in the world.
I can't believe this was recorded in 2011. I find it funny how in bowling, the people in the crowd always look like they're from the mid to late 80's-90's
Norm Duke DID NOT "pull off an Ernie Schlegel" and rub it in Mika's face after he whiffed the 10-pin like Ernie did when Randy Pedersen needed a strike to win the 1995 TPC and he left a STONE 8 similar to the one Norm Duke left in the 8th frame of this title match.
It take only two words to best describe Norm Duke:
Class Act.
You don't believe me, check out the postmatch interview immediately after the title match (not included in this clip but it's up on YT), you'll see for yourself.
wow when I saw this live I was shocked...Duke handled it with amazing class and I felt so bad for Mika...I feel his pain, I missed a 10-pin and cost my high school team a state title
Duke showed the ultimate example of good sportsmanship. Knowing he narrowly just Won a Major Event he still managed to contained himself, he didn't jump up and start screaming and rubbing the moment into Mika's Face. He calmly walked over to the trophy and claimed his title. This is what separates a Man from a Boy. Congrats Duke, You put up one hell of a fight during this match.
come on people, this isn't a league match; it's the US Open and that's where emotions show. This is sports. Crazy things happen. Mika acted like a person who just lost the US Open by missing an easy spare. People that don't get it doesn't understand sports. Don't call Mika a baby for laying on the ground. Just enjoy it for what it is...one of sports all time WOW moments. It's sports and this is why we watch. I loved Mika's reaction; showed you how important this match meant. Remember:US OPEN
This is at the pro level of bowling where almost everyone expects the 10-pin spare to be made, but at a moment like what we just watched, missing it AND losing the title would make any heart sink like the Titanic. Whether you like the reaction or not, you still have to note that it meant a lot to him, that he wanted it as bad as Duke. You don't go in the pros, miss a critical shot, and leave as if it didn't matter; that'd mean something's wrong with you. It's called emotion; take it or leave it.
@racermac1988 cmon man. even though duke is my favorite bowler, mika is still a great bowler. look at all he accomplished this season. he won the 1,000,000 tournament of champions with also bowling a "don johnson similar" 299 game in the semi. and he became the first bowler in pba history to make it to the finals of all four majors. you gotta give this guy credit for that.
I know from experience that hoping too hard not to get tapped on a key shot can leave you mentally unprepared to shoot the spare. I've never bowled for stakes like this, but I think that is what happened to Mika.
For everyone who says that Mika acted like a little baby, can go and practise to be as good bowler as he is, then get to a Major final, miss that pin and try to act as gracefully as possible.. If you can do it, you don´t love this sport. I know I would react even worse than Mika.. because it´s perfectly normal if you love this sport and have a desire to win. period.
@HighRollerrrr: There is truth to some to that. I bowl for my college, and in one of our tournaments we made it to the semi-finals and lost. I shook hands with the team that beat us, then I took my shoes off and threw them as hard as I could in my bag; same with my bowling balls. Its not easy to lose gracefully and yeah, if you have invested that much time it is near impossible. Its all about WHEN you are going to have an outburst. If you WANT to win, you will lose composure.
@HighRollerrrr yea i get that responce from people who dont bowl as a sport, i play on high school and all the kids say "Oh!, its just throwing a ball down a lane." they dont understand the skill it takes to be a bowler
He should have bowled more simply for that last shot. Even with eight pins he still may have won. Tsk Tsk Tsk Mika. You've earned $250k and it wasn't enough. *Sigh*
Mika wanted this bad - this was the rematch of 2008 when Mika dyed his hair orange and got a lot of flack from it. Duke won in the end in that meeting. Not to mention, Mika has never beaten Duke on TV.
What an epic match! - Duke is the man and Major Mika has been a machine this year.
@SportShot300 you're right,.....he CHOKED to the pressure. How else do you explain him channeling the ten pin? it wasn't even close. He was "spot on" the entire tournament until that moment. So I'm comfortable assessing it as "caving" to the pressure Duke applied by striking out in the 10th...... or "choking"
Mika has been like "the Terminator" this season. It's like he had ice in his veins until yesterday. Duke recovered nicely from the open frame and put the pressure squarely back on Mika by striking out the 9th and 10th frames. Mika obviously caved to the pressure and channeled the shot at the ten pin. Mika's a tall, intense and intimidating guy. I know he was crushed rto miss that shot, but geez, did he really have to lay on the floor screaming? Not the classiest of moves.
@KevinF780 not at all. Be a good sport and be gracious. Collect your yourself, shake Duke's hand and gather your balls and bags. Sorry, but to lay on the ground cursing and screaming in Finish just lacked dignity and class.
@wheebill 1. Just because they didn't catch it on camera doesn't mean they didn't shake hands. 2. I doubt you speak Fin, so how do you know he was cursing? Face it, you have no idea what you're talking about.
@KevinF780 1. I NEVER said he DIDN'T shake Duke's hand. What I DID say was, "shake his hand, gather your balls and bags" and leave. Don't lay on the floor like a baby. 2. I guess as he lay on the floor screaming in Fin like a petulant child, he was remarking how happy he was to see Duke win the tournament. 3.He speaks excellent english. If your going to scream something "CLEAN" why are you screaming it in Finish? He needed to "Man up" and he didn't. AND I don't know what I'M talking about? WOW!
@wheebill He just lost the U.S. Open by wiffing the 10-pin. I'm telling you...you would do the same if not worse. Yes, you have no idea what you're talking about. Get over yourself. Just because you haven't gone through anything like Mika has. Idiot.
@KevinF780 It isn't a matter of me GETTING OVER MYSELF. He isn't the first athlete to choke in a championship nor will he be the last. I've seen plenty of choke jobs in my time; Golfers, basketball players missing free throws, NAME it. Bowlers are a fairly classy lot, much like golfers. This WAS NOT a classy move, PERIOD. Does it hurt? HELL YES. good god, man, COWBOY UP. Walk away with your head down, NOT LIKE A BABY. NO, I wouldn't have done the same, but you know it all. ASS
@KevinF780 Actually, you don't know shit. You THINK you do, which makes you all the more nauseating. I've played collegiate baseball and football. Coached both sports and lost playoff games which hurts like hel, REGARDLESS the level of competition.I don't care if it's Tiddly Winks, poker or bowling. NONE of the teams I played on DID what HE did and NONE of the kids I coached DID what he DID. You want to coddle Mika for being a baby? Go ahead, It makes you a CUNT on par with Mika
@wheebill You know bro if you don't like bowling that's fine, but you have to realize that this has happened in every other sport not just bowling. I've seen football, basketball, and baseball players overreact much worse than the way Mika did here. Maybe if you were in Mika's position, you would understand.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@coldassassin99 I LOVE bowling. DIDN'T like Mika's reaction to choking on the ten pin. As I said BEFORE, bowlers are a fairly classy lot, much like golfers. You DO NOT HAVE to be in Mika's position, to MAN THE FUCK UP, collect your gear and quietly leave the building. THAT would've been the CLASSY thing to do, NOT lay on the floor like a five year old cursing in Finnish. I LOST my father, BRO and didn't lie on the floor screaming like a child. COWBOY up, life goes on.
@wheebill He stayed there for all of 20 seconds, got of the approach and let Duke, who was stunned as well, have his time...you say you played and coached baseball and football, and you never once ripped the referees a new one? Never once went out to argue a call? I believe you to be a hypocrit...
@moeds88 I argued plenty of calls, no doubt. I'm talking about laying on the floor like a baby. Now PLEASE explain to me in your warped world how argung an official's call ( which I readily admit to) has ANYTHING to do with Mika laying on the floor acting like a petulant baby? There is ZERO correlation between the two. Jesus, you're a moron.
@wheebill Throwing a temper tantrum like a baby for over 20 seconds at an official is in no way worse then the 15-20 seconds of disbelief that went through everyones mind after Mika missed that spare. In your mind you see different but I feel as though you're one in a million in that thought. So keep being a big man across the internet and hurl some more insults...
@moeds88 You see, this is why you're a retard. Where in my respone tro your original, idiotic comment, did I say anything about "throwing a temper tantrum" at an on field official? tell me, moron. You try to compare his classless, infantile reaction to arguing an officials call. Just because YOU want to make the correlation between the two doesnt't mean the SHOE fits. Keep twisting and torturing words. you'll be certain to make them fit as YOU see fit. AND I'd tell you this to your GUTLESS face.
@wheebill And just because you don't make the correlation doesn't mean others don't. Very hypocritical and judging by the other comments on this video, others see it both ways. so no matter how many capatalized words and insults you hurl behind your computer screen, they don't make you right no matter what you think
@wheebill: Hate to tell ya, but bowlers and golfers are probably the least classy, and this is coming from someone who bowls collegiately. I was at one tournament once where a guy missed a spare just like Mika did, and hit the display screen so hard it shattered. Last time I went to play golf, saw a guy miss a putt and he shouted "F**K!!" at the top of his lungs and hit the ground with his putter so hard that it nearly broke. All the best sports players lose their composure; its the will to win.
Did not expect that ending at all. I feel for Mika but at the same time I'm happy Norm won too. Both of them are my fav bowlers and let me tell you both really had a hell of a match.
Mika still made ALL FOUR Majors this season (Not to mentioning winning one too) and that alone is impressive. He'll see more titles in the future no doubt.
Thx for the quick UL.I where dying to watch this! This year certainly had a few surprizes in store.Tough break for Mika, but im sure the best man won.Isent that allways the case?LoL Not the bigest man,nor the strongest, but the guy that had the best pincount.Congrat to Norm, youre the man!
I feel bad for Mika and I think this is very terrible way to lose game like this. I hope we will see Mika back for stronger next time. GO MIKA. Congratulations to Duke.
Mika mubles on the floor over and over again: fuck, you can not miss one pin...
Then he says to her wife and daughter: I was just terribly nervous about that spare
DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKE!!! Norm's finish definitely put pressure on Mika - notice how badly he was rooting for a strike on his first ball after Norm turkeyed out. Amazing finish, feel bad for Mika, but he'll definitely bounce back.
I just about cried at 10:16. You can see Mika's oldest daughter in the background. It looks like she's fighting back tears. This will be a game for the ages.
I literally sat there for 5 minutes shocked after seeing Mika miss that 10 pin. That moment definitely ranks up there with the Randy Pedersen 8 pin and Machael Haugen Jr. coming from behind to beat Barnes at the world championship.
Mika has the advantage - he can cuss like a sailor in Finnish and not get bleeped. :-)

Great match, good thing I didn't read the comments until after I watched it!

@eiperkele1000 thanks for the translation! I figured it was something along those lines.
I feel awful for Mika, he's one of my favorite bowlers.
