I'm a tenor and I'm neapolitan, Neapolitan songs should be sung always freely, sometimes "voce fuori d'orchestra" that's the spirit of a neapolitan song.. Not belcanto, not dramatic as you wish with a sound voice.
Excelente voz pero tiene gran debilidad en la interpretacion. Si uno ve sus papeles en las operas deja mucho que desear su actuación corporal y cantada.
Si puo criticare ed è molto facile farlo ma non dimentichiamo che MDM è stato il più grande tenore drammatico italiano. In più aveva oltre 50 anni e 300 Otelli sulle spalle... Oggi i tenori non hanno più palle, lui ne aveva.... da vendere.
@Elried I think its important to know that Del monaco was a vocalist that found a niche for himself because of his unique dramatic voice and he definitely is not singing in a bel canto method but his style was to thrill audiences thru his large voice and stage presents which he did but it did not please everybody. but i can assure you that if you saw him in person your appreciation value would rise dramatically even if you were not a fan of his because singing is basically vocals .

Concordo pienamente. Il canto di questo tenore, oltre alla mancanza totale di eleganza, evidenzia la precarietà del legato e la continua manomissione della linea melodica e musicale. Come sempre vi è sfoggio di potenza vocale, ma che poco o a nulla serve in questa canzone. In definitiva: un'esecuzione per tifosi e viscerali.

@belcantomania Guardi per me uno dei più grandi cantanti di ogni tempo è Tito Schipa, per la sua tecnica e il suo modo di cantare, quindi agli antipodi da Del Monaco. Detto questo, su MDM ci sono dei contrasti di idee , di come interpreta lui il canto,di come canta la canzone napoletana, ecc... I think again he is better at heavier songs and or arias. Heard him in his best role in 59' at la scala, Otello and in that he was terrific but really I have heard a live MARTINELLI OTELLO FROM 1942 THAT WAS VERY GOOD ALSO WITH STELLA ROMAN AT THE MET. Pav, Domingo and Carreras are very good. They are the best of late 20th century. But they DO NOT belong to the team of Mario, Corelli, Gigli, Caruso.This clip is a proof of this statement.
