The life those sailors led was harder than anything we could imagine. I reckon being half-cut for most of the voyage was the only way they could cope. Besides, James Lind had proven the link between scurvy and a lack of vitamin C several years before Nelson was born, and helped coin the pejorative Limey after sailors were given lime juice (see lines from New York Girls re 'lime-juice sailor'.
I'm not sure whether or not your assertation that sailors were drinking rum to prevent scurvy is true, but I know it won't work. Rum is fermented raw sugar so it has no Vitamin C, of course. Still, sailors might have thought that in that age - after all, they smoked because it was supposed to be good for you as a pick-me-up. Sailors were able to eat bug-infested and half-rotten food & they saw a lot of blood, so I don't think they would have minded willingly & knowingly "tapping the Admiral."
the story i was told was that since they preserved Nelson's body in the alcohol and DIDN'T TELL ANYONE so not to scare them. The sailors drilled holes in the barrel to get the alcohol, in turn they ended up drinking Nelson's blood. When they got back, they found out what happened and Nelson's body wasn't well preserved. Lol storys vary a lot =P
Where can I get this amazing CD you have got there, mate? amazing song, thxs for uploading it, i have been looking for ar shanty as good as this one since a while!
when it says roll the old chariot along, they mean the boat. the chariot is the boat. and nelson is a great sailor. They say if u have a drop oof his blood that means good luck. im learning about this.
Admiral Nelson died during a naval battle...so they shoved him in a grog barrel to preserve him and they ran out of grog so...a drop of Nelson's blood would'nt do us any harm...or at least that the story I got.
Just a small detail: it's "Mystic Seaport" -- one of the premier maritime museums in America. If you want to see the singer of this, Don Sineti, you can see my vid:
OMGosh just when you do another wondeful one you top it with an even better credits song! ...u realise ofc that you HAVE to do a vid with my last night in baltimore now XD
When Admiral Nelson was killed at Trafalgar, they didn't give him a sea burial. Instead, they preserved his body in a barrel of alcohol for a funeral back at England. Throughout the voyage, they had to refill the barrel containing Nelson's body several times because the sailors thought it would make them into better sailors if they drank "nelson's blood".
Or at least that's the story I've always been told...
@kotori87 Its true I was on his ship once as a child and they showed us the barrel... or a replica. Funny there was a plaque on the deck reading 'Here Nelson Fell' and my Dad told me he had tripped over the wooden bump under the plaque... and me being about 6 fell for it (no pun internded)
I say they stuck him in a barrel not sure if they drank his blood like lol
@kotori87 There's another story: After the battle of New Orleans, the British did the same thing to their commander. They forbade anyone from drinking from that barrel, but of course it didn't work. He was an Admiral, so those who drank and got tipsy, it was said they had been "tapping at the Admiral."
@kotori87 no not exacly admril neson was killed and the last words he said were "not over the ege "
so the put him in a barral of GROG i wicth carred achool to preseve it after tere ship had no wind for months the had to open nelsons barrle and drink the grog to not get scurrvey and they said "a drop of nelsons blod never do us any harm note he said not over the ege becuse he thout it would bring the sailors spirts down note 2 grog was made out of achool lime and coal
@Salisaad no it was never used to save rum how would it help to have your crew be drunk and it was used to help not have scurvy and the rum was in grog to help persevere it

True, 1770s Continental Marine was allotted something like third a gallon of lemonade a day to prevent scurvy.

This was sung while they hauled the anchor up on the man o' wars in the age of sails and cannons.

Unlikely -- shanteys were generally banned on British naval vessels.

For "StatenIslandFolkie". Typical "Whitehall Admiralty Snobs" with their nose in the air attitude's. Very sad indeed on their parts!

yeah but I doubt at sea that they would be messed with if it kept morale up. Atleast if the captian had any sense

I wonder how many times this got sung by the "Royal Sailor's" on the "Superclass Destroyer's" that fought the U-Boats during the War?!

I was gonna mention the "Nelson's blood = rum" thing, but I think someone already pointed it out.

@kotori87 No one drank from the barrel. That's a myth. He was preserved in a barrel of Brandy though. That is correct.

@kotori87 - apparently it's where the phrase 'tapping the admiral' comes from... the sailors sneaked drinks out of the barrel with macaroni straws.

@sadielouguesswho Grog is rum diluted with hot water - man named Grog invented this to 1) save rum 2) reduce crew inebriation.
