I saw him play this live as well. Its difficult to recognize the song until he begins the chorus. And it really is hilarious. I remember him talking about when he decided to cover it, he set out to see how badly he could drag out the sadness of the song. And in some reguard it is a joke, yet its so beautiful that you can't help but take it seriously. Incredible song.

It was originally written to be sung by a male from a male point of view with a slow tempo

It was a rather sad song about a guy who could not find a meaningfull relationship with a girl (as his parents wanted him to) because they (girls) "just wanna have fun".

When Cyndi Lauper recorded it, some minor changes in the lyrics were made to give it a female point of view along with more upbeat tempo and and made it the female anthem of having fun that we all know.
