When my chestnuts were done, they were soggy and had the texture (and almost the taste) of a baked potato. I couldn't peel them very easily because the squishy meat would just peel up with the skin.
The tutorial I followed said to soak them for an hour,
What am I doing wrong here? Did I soak them too long? Not let them dry enough? :(
Just finished decorating the tree and roasting the chestnuts. They were perfect. All peeled easily. Not sure if it was due to following the directions or being crazy enough to bring a bunch back from the spice market in Istanbul. They looked so good we couldn't resist. Will try again next week with the ones I can get at our local store.
Really interesting video.. I doubt that we have fresh chestnuts here in Iceland, never seen them. Maybe I´ll take a hard look next time I go to the supermarked!
I hope you can find some. They are really a great food to enjoy. I know European countries export a lot of chestnuts. Good luck and thanks for commenting!
Hi. Good question. You don't have to soak them. I like to because the water that is absorbed steams while it is roasting. This makes the shell softer and easier to peel. It also helps to keep the shells from catching fire in the open flame.
Oh yum! These are so delicious! I love roasted chestnuts in turkey stuffing with wild rice, chopped fennel and cranberries. When I was a kid, we'd roast these over my parent's gas log. Cheesy, but a good memory!
ZOMG, I WANNA SEE EXPLODING CHESTNUTS! RIGHT NOW! o.O

@TF0olery They definitely have the texture and flavor of a baked potato. Sometimes they are difficult to peel.. Hope you have better luck next time!

They are good dipped in butter. I eat them almost every week as one of my main carbs. You can boil them with anise as well.
XCritonX 1 year ago
@XCritonX Sounds nice. I'll have to try them with anise.

At 20 seconds, those are buckeyes not chestnuts. Buckeyes are poisonous, and are sometimes called horse chestnuts.

Here in Germany, they are traditional snacks on our "Weihnachtsmärkten" (christmas market)
So when I smell them, I know christmas is coming :)

Dude... I think those are water chestnuts that you use in your chop suey. =]
Water chestnuts do resemble the chestnut, but are not actually a nut.

Thanks, but what's the reason for soaking chestnuts in water?

Roasted chestnuts are always a delicious and natural snack. Sorry, I sound like a salesman...
I've never tried dipping chestnuts in sour cream. I ought to remember that for next time I have some.
Interesting and educational video as always, Jason.

These do make a great snack. My wife tipped me off about dipping them in sour cream. I like to chop them up and put them in my stuffing.
Thanks for the nice compliment on the vid Dustin! I really enjoy making these videos and seeing all the nice comments.
