@scrubanizer The silence have the ability to plant ideas into the minds of the human race, for example the silence manipulated the human race into going into space so that they could get their hands on a space suit. The doctor interupted the moon landing broadcast and showed the human race footage of the silence ordering the humans to kill them on sight.

Remember the episode where The Doctor, River, Roryand Amy would have strange tic marks all over their skin? That was so they would know how many Silence they saw. However their mind manipoulation backfired cause they saw that once Silence say "kill us all on sight" they kill them look away then forget.

Appearence: The have awesome looking faces (kinda like the Scream mask). They're tall, AND THEY HAVE SUITS! Whats cooler than bad guys in suits?

They delete themselves from your memory the moment you look away, and can zap you with crazy Star wars lightning. And their voices are deep and bone chilling. They've basically been running humanity since it began. (And they can breathe underwater.)

The Doctor knows the Silents aren't going to leave of their own (free? good?) will as they've got too much time and effort invested in the human race to do otherwise, but he still offers them the chance to go anyway. They also have struck at him, and his best friends, and his lover, River.

Notice over the course of the this series (6) that he takes out his enemies, one at a time. But, they're just marionettes. I think in series 7 we'll find out who's been pulling the strings all along.
