I saw Pinera on Charlie Rose, and I dont like him. He's a pig making excuses for the abuses of the right in the past both in his own country and in Argentina. He's an asshole. I hope Chile wakes up and sends him to the outhouse where he should live.

@TheRealCritique Pinera is NOT an arsehole. He's a humble man, even though he's a head of state and a billionaire and the son of a diplomat. He takes time to shake the hands of complete strangers and he genuinely likes to listen to what others have to say. He is not responsible in any way for the human rights abuses perpetrated by his thuggish predecessor. Pinera and the other guy are like chalk and cheese.

@TheRealCritique I was in Chile in March. His support was lower than the 50% due to the nuclear plants agreement occurring after the Japanese earthquake. Chile, like Japan, is a country highly vulnerable to natural disasters and more nuclear plants don't benefit Chile economically at all, considering the big loss these would contribute to Chilean land in case of a nuclear disaster.

Me sumo a algunos comentarios a mi tampoco me agrada mucho Piñera, ni mucho la música de Placebo. Pero se agradece y valora mucho su gesto de apoyo a los damnificados por el terremoto. Y también valoro el gesto de Piñera de recibirlos en la moneda.

Que irónico encuentro! Tanto Piñera como su ministro de cultura son unos homofóbicos declarados. Durante el festival de viña del '89, Cruz Coke se opuso a q un artista continuara en el escenario ya que lo consideraba un "tipo raro". En el caso del actual presidente, todos sabemos que el como "buen católico" considera que los homosexuales son "seres anormales".

i'm not sure what the band is getting out of this (appearing in news magazines -> massive audiences? flights for free on pinera's airline?) but i'm convinced pinera profits from it. this is just populist. yuk.

There's lots of people still homless after the earthquakes, and all help is welcome. With or without "ulterior motives" or "secret agendas".

@diegowushu i didn't say there's something wrong with donating money for the victims of the earthquake. BUT what is shown on tv - especially in the news - mostly isn't shown for no reason. i don't begrudge the band airtime in - what i consider important - tv news shows. but the price they pay for it is: they agreed to being exploited by pinera. he's obviously trying to increase his popularity among a certain population with appearances like this.

@Chile1881 populism's a problem in countries all over the globe and people on the "left" can use it as people on the "right" can. it's not per se populist for politicians to welcome artists (of course mostly presidents, chancellors, mayors and those concerned with cultural policies do it). still it's often used for image reasons (in most cases: why else do it?).

@Chile1881 as an artist you have to make decisions whether you do something like this or not and so i understand you often walk a fine line. so it's just something about the scale and how this in particular was carried out that makes me feel uncomfortable about it. no offence.

@diegowushu you may consider for yourself whether supporting (conservative/right-wing) pinera's good or not. whichever way you look at it this appearence IS some kind of support. intended (by the band&the people about them) or not - what's important is what's coming across&what kind of effect it has. i see that there's at least a chance it's having some positive effect for pinera.

I could be wrong,but i don't think the band is quite informed in current South American politics,if they knew what he really stands for,i think they wouldn't have appeared with him.After all,in their current tour they're playing consistenly the song "Trigger Happy",whose lyrics are self-explanatory of their political stance.

@diegowushu so we agree on what we are seeing :) i can't quite believe they didn't care to know who pinera is&what he stands for before the meeting, they never seemed that naive to me. like you said: i never perceived them as being supportive of really right-wing politics&that's why this show left me a bit confused. to me it's populist on the one side&opportunist on the other. nothing wrong with opportunism if you're a band but i just think in this context it is problematic.
