My parakeet has been fluffing up its feathers ALL the time. Another thing that's happening is she's losing feathers around her eyes/ face. She hasn't been to the vet yet, I got her 3 weeks ago from a pet store. I really regret getting a parakeet there and I should of got one from a breeder. I reAlly hope nothing is majorly wrong with her but from the looks of things I think something is. :(
Ok...seriously, I need help :( My parakeet's nose started bleeding aaaaaaand its freaking me out...idk if he maybe ran into something in his cage when he was sleeping and hit his beak, or what?! I'm scared..idk if I should take him in the vet or not :/
Right now tonight, my beard is very shaky. doesnt move at all, always makes sad chirps, and is not eating or drinking anything even if i bring it close to the beak. please help. In the afternoon she was perfectly fine and jumping around here and there.
Hi I live in Ireland and I'm getting a parakeet. It definetly never gets to 70 degrees here! Was he talking in farenheight or did he actually mean degrees celcius? The parakeets in the pet shop seem quite fine and it probably isn't very warm in there.
@hamsters56789 I'm sure he was talking Fahrenheit. 70 degrees in a house or building isn't that warm, to be honest. As compared to walking outside in the sun and it being 70, it feels blistering. [In fahrenheit. That is, I'm not sure how it measures over to Celcius.] There's a lot to owning a bird, it's far different then a cat, dog, hamster, etc. Message me if you need to know anything particular, I've had three thus far.
I almost lost my lovebird. Thank god I had the common sense to know something was wrong. Wish I'd seen this earlier! But thank god she's healthy and squeaky now :3
i have a cocatiel i just got today, shes 3 months old, this morning when i braught her home she was weezing, shes very tame and she wasnt hissing or anything she was weezing and she wasnt chirping AT ALL!, but then she stopped this behavior? please tell me wtf shes doing?
my bird has a very swollen up bum hole (vent) and is staying in one area of his cage puffed up and can barely stan and balance himself :( is he going to die? :(
@iiDemonicDoll When did you get it, it takes about a month for them to get used enough to their environment to make noises. They have incredible memories.

My parakeet is very hyper, or I think so , always checking something out and singing.
She's not tamed right now, she was but after her man died (about 1 and a half year ago) she doesn't like being touched but is getting a little bit better now (doesn't let me touch her though). She's always puffing her feathers up but just that kind of shake like your bird did in this video... do I need to take her to the vet ?
I don't want to hold her because she gets scared and I'm working on her...Plese help

thank u this helped i have 2 birds my first one died it was always puffy ands sitting in the corner of her cage now i know, i have another one that came with her wing bleeding, a feather fell out, how do u treat that?
I hav a question when your parakeet has like little plastic-looking things on his head like little white plastic streaks what does that mean?? PLEASE HELP!!!
I was wondering, becuz my parakeets mate just died, and before she did he was fine, but now hes in the corner of the cage and he just sleeps there, hes been eating and drinking, and im wondering if it could judt be from stress from loosing his freind, and wondering what i should do about it, should i wait, or buy him a new mate, or what? Please get back to me as soon as you can, thanks.
Hey what does it means...like when the bird doesn't move for shit..n he actually let's u touch him?.....n then he closes his eyes sometimes...n he put his head on the floor every 5 mins or less n starts twisting :/ ?
N his doing that right now...hope he survives whatever he has :( I think his crying the way he make the noises...
Actually, when a budgie, or any parrot species puffs themselves up.. it means they are content.. not ill. When sleeping, resting, or just watching what's going on, it'll puff up. Lethargia, is not just an indicator of illness, it also indicate loneliness, and/or boredom, change things around for them. Don't just feed/water them. Talk to them, spend time with them, these are social birds. If you can afford it, get another bird, Keep their cages clean, provide new things to do, daily.
My budgie Tweety started sitting on one foot last week. On saturday evening she was really puffed up. I knew something wasnt good. So we planned taking her to the vet on monday since the vet was closed on sunday. Tweety died that sunday morning :( after being with us for almost 12 years. RIP my little girl, my best friend, Tweety
@D17rulez that's so sad, I had the same thing happen. Almost Identical last month. I had a parakeet named Sabrina, she started standing on just one foot, got super puffed up. We managed to take her to the vet, but they said she was too far gone to do anything, they told me what I didn't want to hear, expect to see her on the bottom of the cage. She died May 19, in my hands, she was twelve years old as well. Her mate died 2 weeks later because he kept throwing his food up cuz he missed her. :(
MY Prakeet just started walking only on one of its foot and he wont grab my hand or do anything with the other foot y??? im so scared please someone help :..(
My parakeet is lethargic, but not puffed up. I put him in a box on a towel, because he was wobbling on the perch. Can they get better, or do they always die?
one day in 2009 i saw my bird n the middle of the cage all puffed up and he was there for about a week then the next day i woke up and i said yes its the start of 2010 then i went to look on my bird and it was on the ground dead and his stomach was all yellow
My first parakeet died from being sick however I wasn't sure how to tell I was around 13 years old at the time. However he would want to sit next to my neck and snuggle close under my hair whenever he was out. :(
I just got my parakeet today, and he or she is extremely quiet and is staying in one area of my cage. He or she is not puffing up their feathers though...
My Parakeets Name Is Tweety I Got Him Today And He Is 6 weeks Old He Itching Himself Lots And Looks Like Hes Going To Puke Please Any1 Help Me I Dont Want Him To Die Please Messege Me And Tell Me What I Can Do :(
Just because your bird is lethargic and is puffing out his feathers doesnt always mean he is sick cause they will do the exact same thing right before they molt their feathers. A good sign that your Bird is sick is by checking his droppings. If they are mostly liquid than chances are you have a sick bird.
My bird started throwing up some creamy/liquid (almost white-ish) with bits of food. Is she just regurgitating like for feeding babies or should I be worried??
@triplewee10 prob has a cold, make sure you keep him extra warm and keep him away from drafts, my bird loves to cuddle in a fuzzy blanket, I also read if u give him noncaffeinated chamomille tea nice and luke warm not hot, it will make him better...
@warofthewalruses i havent i gave him regular pelet food i checked the experation date before i fed him.oh yea no need to tell me what they need i already know what there alergic to
@linkboy00000000 when i was little... my brother bought a parakeet and years later it was puffed up and down on the cage.. and even though we don't know how a bird looks sick, we knew how it acted on its daily basis... we knew it wasn't feeling good :(, we had birds in that cage too. I've suffered to much... it's...so heartbreaking losing someone. And I'm still a parakeet/parrot/lovebird owner. for 7yrs.
I got a parakeet, sunday but now I think he's sick. He puffs up and quickly back down,he eats until he's full, he sneezes rarely, sleeps alot,he's alwas quiet he also dont drink water and his poop is GREEN,is it because he's a babey or sad that he lest the pet store ohh he was tamed.
@Gochar96 I'm sure your Parakeet is normal, it's just he has to get used to his surroundings. :) When parakeets are cautious, they tend to puff up, and then quickly back down. Also, parakeet poop is green, so that's normal too.. ;)
I just got 2 parakeet 10 hr ago..... ( now it's 2 morning In the morning) and I saw one of thames is a bit cold.... So i took a blanket n wrapped it all around the cage..... But left a bit of te blanket open on the side so air can get in.... Is that alrite??? Any suggestion???
@Koolkid736 Thanx for replying... I would say that they r my 1st parakeets, though i did had a par. 3 or 4 yrs ago, but i didnt noe how to take care of it, so it died within 3 weeks! :(
Can i ask u somthing? (Or if anybody else can answers this questions, plz reply!) Recently, my parakeets seemed to be itching and started to plucked the feathers under their wings, so bad to the point where I can c a few bald spot, any idea wat happened to them? (& plz dont say "take them 2 the vet)
Okay I am a first time owner and my parakeet (koriann) was just bougght 3 days ago, I have changed it's food out evry day and givin it toys and perches it puffs up and it's tail is low. That is some of the signs, Iknow but also it is sleepy... I played music for her and wanted to know what to do.... I can't take it to a vet because my parents are gone and my brother is looking after me, What do I do? Is it really sick...? Or sleepy...? D:
@joyslenfann if your bird is tail bobbing thats a sign if sickness tailbobbing is when it keeps moving his tail back and forth in a bobbing motion....but you only had him 3 days let him settle in for at least 2 weeks before you start worrying
@joyslenfann it was probaly just sleepy because i just got a budgie 4 days ago and he does that...also i am a first time parakeet owner...i named my budgie Chi-Chi :)
My Toby bird ended up very depressed at one point. We clipped his wings so he wouldn't fly away. He got pretty inactive at that point and hated us. Then about a month or so after our neighbor kid broke into the house and tore out all his tail feathers. He hardly ate and hardly tweeted. It was so sad to see him like this. But was it depression or sickness? And what does lethargic mean?
Toby pulled through and is about 3 or 4 years old. He is my special. He comes when he's called.
that could be an indicator that the beak is too long or he..um...cleans his butt alot and doesnt clean it off properly. I know that last thing sounds a bit weird but thats what happened to my parakeet.
My parakeet puffs up when u get him mad and there nithing wrong with him he's playful and sings alot but i'm worried cause he bit me and made me bleed what do i do?
it may somehow be warmer or colder in the cage then in the room, so wat u can do is buy one of those 1 dollar stick on thermometers and stick it inside the cage somewhere. wait about two hours and come back to check wat the temperature is. if it is below 70 degrees farenhiet than u either need to move ur cage in a warmer room or find some other source of heat. if it is over 70 degrees farenhiet than it will be fine. it should never get over 85 degrees farenheit though. hope this helped. =)

triplewee10 1 year ago
@triplewee10 prob has a cold, make sure you keep him extra warm and keep him away from drafts, my bird loves to cuddle in a fuzzy blanket, I also read if u give him noncaffeinated chamomille tea nice and luke warm not hot, it will make him better...

And I'm still a parakeet/parrot/lovebird owner. for 7yrs.

paularocks10 1 year ago
I got a parakeet, sunday but now I think he's sick. He puffs up and quickly back down,he eats until he's full, he sneezes rarely, sleeps alot,he's alwas quiet he also dont drink water and his poop is GREEN,is it because he's a babey or sad that he lest the pet store ohh he was tamed.
Gochar96 1 year ago
@Gochar96 I'm sure your Parakeet is normal, it's just he has to get used to his surroundings. :) When parakeets are cautious, they tend to puff up, and then quickly back down. Also, parakeet poop is green, so that's normal too.. ;)

What about flakey legs??
BigTripp509 1 year ago
puffing up can also be a sign your parakeet is content and jst happy.
but if its puffing up between the wings in the back something could be wrong.

joyslenfann 1 year ago
@joyslenfann if your bird is tail bobbing thats a sign if sickness tailbobbing is when it keeps moving his tail back and forth in a bobbing motion....but you only had him 3 days let him settle in for at least 2 weeks before you start worrying
draco3113 1 year ago

The very tip of my keets beak is turning black-brown... Is this normal, or could it be sick?
zigzag747 2 years ago
that could be an indicator that the beak is too long or he..um...cleans his butt alot and doesnt clean it off properly. I know that last thing sounds a bit weird but thats what happened to my parakeet.
stephiem01 2 years ago
@zigzag747 Is it the beak or the nose because if its the nose, it just means its now an adult
kulebra5 2 years ago
i guess sick.cuz that happened to my fave green parakeet in 2 days it died

xLovexPains 2 years ago
um how can you tell if your pareekets room is to cold
softballqueen4567 2 years ago 16
a thermometre...
i mean wow seriously?kill yourself now or castrate yourself
ninja6kid 2 years ago
it may somehow be warmer or colder in the cage then in the room, so wat u can do is buy one of those 1 dollar stick on thermometers and stick it inside the cage somewhere. wait about two hours and come back to check wat the temperature is. if it is below 70 degrees farenhiet than u either need to move ur cage in a warmer room or find some other source of heat. if it is over 70 degrees farenhiet than it will be fine. it should never get over 85 degrees farenheit though. hope this helped. =)
