To 'green screen' or chroma key, you don't need it to be green, any colour will do. (Though green is normally used as it is the most receptive colour for digital cameras, and so makes a better image)

Alright, I'm going to disagree with you here Chris. A cloth one would be interesting, but any dude can make one by picking the materials up.

The cool thing about this being translucent is that you use that for back lighting. Yes, it is a nicer thing for photography and film. However, when this is done it usually isn't in the shot.
