Yes, that's how i came here; i was watching / hearing Ponselle Schippa, and the next click was on this one. I had never heard Ponselle as Anna, and have been listening to Ponselle recordings for 27 years, and never heard an Anna, haha, only a little "Bati, Bati", and wondering if the Donna Anna part might be to heavy for her, and at the same time being blown away by the emotion in her voice; understanding why audience loved her, critics sometimes not...
I'm sitting here listening to it for the second time, and am first of all mesmerized by the beautiful and so tastefully collected and wonderfully edited pics, and sec still think she must have sang that one note with him; somehow it seems wierd that she should; i don't know if it says so in the score, it's out of my league, but wow, this is so haunting...
Oh wow. how did i ever miss this!!! Thank you so much for posting this.I love how she sings the last part of the aria with this respirative breathing technique; completely absorbing it in her interpretation, so that it becomes part of the emotion.
And did she join in on his last high note; Oh, Manon?
Or was that an incredible overtone that he hit there? It is wondrous what these two titans do here; no matter if people call them "Legero", to me they are Titans of Refinement...
@loetje The whole opera is worth a listen to, readily available, Although some cd issues are not in tip to shape with poor filtering. We also have Schipa and Ponselle in 1934 performing Don Giovanni. Sayao obviously was a great Manon, her voice blended extremely well with Schipa.

Absolutely transfixing performance...I hung on every beautifully
nuanced word & phrase. Neither artist possessed a large
booming voice, but they used their vocal gifts with soaringly expressive intelligence, haunting beauty, iconic acting
and searing emotional effect without hitting the listener
over the head with exaggerated sentimentality. Wonderful
job in presenting the great photos and memorabilia!
Thank you for posting this glittering jewel TFL2 & to
teachertenor for sharing! Sublime!
