You can later say "I was there when it happened and didn't wait for the media to introduce me to this song and this band" (which they probably never would). Besides, music becomes some sort of diary: I remember listening to illusion by VNV Nation when my bro was working abroad; to Soliwork's "Martyr" when I worked at a construction site (my first job) etc.
