I know alot of people call Jack a coward for run away, or call him evil for letting Steven die, of course I don't expect people to truly understand unless they were in Jack's shoes having to make those choices.
I can't blame Jack for running away, a person can only endure so much, no matter how immortal Jack may be he is still human, every death tears at his soul. And as for Steven, Jack had to make a choice, let the world fall to chaos or sacrifice his grandson to save all, that isn't easy.
Suberbly Surreal Brilliant...you can't help but feel sorry for Jack, even if some of the deaths were his 'fault.' You do a wonderful job of showing this, in the context of that last scene.
