I love this musical. These lyrics mean so much to me, but it kills me that they don't prod at my emotions the same way plenty of other, fairly thoughtlessly written musical theatre platitudes manage to. I find it hard to connect to this emotionally, even though it's still the best musical theatre there is. One day I hope I really can feel the beauty that I know I see.
To me, this is Sondheim's masterpiece. It truly is a one of a kind masterpiece. No other musical addresses the worth of the artist, the process, and the beauty of art as much as this show. Brilliantly through-composed not just for the sake of imitating opera, but each minute of music sets a mood. There are no cheap gimmicks here. No awkward pauses for pre-paid jokes by writers who don't care. No juke-box songs. THIS is what a musical should be. Full of heart, soul, and art.
I can't believe that someone actually disliked this clip. Mandy and Bernadette at their best. A fabulous and passionate performance from two great artists. If you don't like this you don't like theater.
@loveeaddict94 You wouldn't happen to have a recording that you could upload. I'd love to hear a marching band tackle this song. I'd love to see a marching band play Sondheim in general.
I love "Sunday In The Park" so much. It is truly such a beautiful show in every sense of the word. It just gets better every time I watch it. So magical & emotional. Mostly, I think it's because of Bernadette & Mandy.
I've seen other productions, but it's just never the same. There's never that sensation they bring. Daniel Evans & Jenna Russell were perfectly fine, but they didn't have the magic these 2 do. Like they said on the DVD commentary, there's just SOMETHING about them in this show.
The second Bernadette walks onto the Walter Kerr stage, the bustle in her dress is an immediate throwback to Sunday. CHECK IT OUT. A Litlle Night Music.
I saw her as Desiree in ALNM two weeks ago -- What I wouldn't give to see her again in that role. She's still on top of her game at 62. Looking like she's not a day over 40.
@DivaBehavior My parents actually saw this cast live in 1984, and told me it was absolutely amazing show. I have the show on DVD, but I agree that seeing it live would have been amazing!! ^_^
I can't believe I accidentally hit 'dislike'! :O Forgive me fans of this video. I shamefully gave this video the first 'negative' mark. :(
I saw her in concert last month, and while she did not sing THIS song, I own the DVD that this came from and it touched my heart. (Also, this musical helped me get an A+ on my paper about Seurat. :) "Color and Light". :D
When I feel depressed, this song makes me feel better.
Just saw a production of this at Philadelphia's Arden Theatre. While the production was top-notch, with excellent vocals and a great cast, I had particular difficulty seeing anyone else in the role of 'Dot/Marie' except Bernadette. While the actress I saw was terrific, I just can't get anything Bernadette plays out of my head. Terrific show, though...if you're in Philly, check it out.
My friend and I had a conversation about that, recently -- "Sunday in the Park" is our favorite show, but if we ever saw it without Mandy/Bernadette, it would not be the artistic enormity that it is.
@DivaBehavior I enjoyed the Arden's production a lot. Their George was wonderful, too. Obviously, he's no Patinkin, but he was a little more likeable...lol. But Dot is such a difficult character, and the actress who played her was very good. However, Dot is pretty funny, and this actress seemed to avoid all of the character's humor. Her opening "Sunday In The Park With George" was good, but there was none of the hilarious frustration and irritation that Bernadette put into it...
A humorless Dot is not acceptable -- I do appreciate that she didn't ham it up with gimmicks to try to get laughs, but Dot has to have a wonderful sense of humor and a glow about her that directly contrasts with George's obsession and neurosis. Bernadette was simply made to play Dot, and Mandy was made to play George.
And I think that Mandy's George was likeable, because he made the audience understand how driven he felt to create art.
@DivaBehavior Yes, true. I think "Finishing the Hat" really makes you feel for George, and get inside his head, and understand the lonliness that's often required to be an artist. However, I do often get frustrated with the George character, but only because I so desperately wanted he and Dot to make it! lol. I think Bernadette is the quintessential Dot, because every time I listen to her "We Do Not Belong Together" I practically tear up. The Arden's Dot didn't achieve that emotional anguish.
@DivaBehavior THIS JUST IN! BERNADETTE PETERS IS RETURNING TO BROADWAY THIS SUMMER! She is taking over the role of Desiree in the revival of "A Little Night Music." I couldn't be more excited. I can't even describe it...I wanted to see the show before Lansbury & Zeta-Jones left, but now I'll wait to see Bernadette.
@DivaBehavior I'm DEFINITELY seeing it! I wanted to see Lansbury and Zeta-Jones, and I'm especially sad about missing Lansbury, but I have to see Bernadette. I love her too much...one of my biggest crushes! lol. And although we lose Lansbury, the great Elaine Stritch is taking over for her.
@DivaBehavior When I read your comment, I realized that the reason that they contrast is due to George used contrast in his painting to create a single color, like two people make one couple.
I never "really" understood the meaning of this song until one morning when I was listening to it on headphones as I rode to work. My wife and I had just separated after 24 years of marriage and I had been depressed. After really hearing the song I realized that we were both moving on, and that we were doing so for all the right reasons. What an epiphany! Tears started rolling down my cheeks. And things just seemed to fit together better after that.
@DLM629 I think you just nailed it on the head. Artists create so that people can connect to their work and take a little bit away with them. It is such a gorgeous moment and with times always seeming so uncertain, I think a lot of us can relate.
Around 1:50 Bernadette Peters' button flashes in the light perfectly in time with the music, right after: "Stop worrying if your vision is new." Nothing beats live performance!
I like RAGTIME, but it doesn't even begin to compare to SUNDAY IN THE PARK -- which is a complete masterpiece, a work of genius, never before seen in the theater.
I think my top __ (in no particular order) are "A Little Night Music," "Company," "Sunday in the Park," "Gypsy," "Follies," "Jekyll & Hyde" (guilty pleasure), and "Merrily We Roll Along."
@DivaBehavior I want to see "A Little Night Music" ASAP (since Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta Jones are leaving in June!), it looks amazing...have you seen the revival??
See it before CZJ leaves. I saw it, and her understudy was dreadful. But the rest of the cast was wonderful, with a few exceptions which I could overlook.
A blank page or canvas. The very last show that I saw with my Mother! Sondheim was in back, pacing, because someone else was playing the part of George. No one else could do the vocals like Mandy could and can! Ty for the post!
Patinkin sounds like George M. Cohan. I don't care for it.

The beginning of this song is SO similar to the Baker and his wife's conversation at the very end of Into the Woods.
Dear lord, this song is perfect. Then again, the show itself is a masterpiece.

I think that Evans and Russell are both very talented, and their voices are fuller than Patinkin and Peters...
But something about the chemistry that Patinkin and Peters have makes this so touching. The way their voices blend -- how human they make this moment.
