One thing I admire about Buckley is that he usually was very civil. This is the only instance where I have seen him get really nasty with a debating opponent, and you have to admit that Vidal provoked him a bit. Nobody likes being called a Nazi, "crypto-" or otherwise.

Its not really a grammatical but a conceptual point: all relationships are defacto if they are in fact relationships so its kind of redundant unless the relationship is somehow hidden. And homosexual relationships tend to be....As for that essay, running through it I find no mention of what you claim - but thats no surprise since it was written in 1969.

well I can't post it here, although if you do a case sensitive search for "distasteful encounter with william" and "vidal" you should find it. I am unsure of the use of the word "defacto" in other countries, but in Australia it means an intimate relationship that has lasted more than three years while residing in the same premises. The article comments on the idea of using the word "queer" as an insult, by the way.
