i gotta a quick question, ive been looking into getting an enfield and the gun shop up the road has two, one for $129 and the other for $149. as far as the actual gun goes theyre both fine working but the stocks are beat up bad. im not too worried about having all original peices, if i got it id change the stocks. you reakon thats a decent price for a fixer?
I was referring to how this is nothing more than a waste of ammunition. This was the first rifle I used in my basic training in the military and we were all trained in developing a rapid bolt action such as displayed here. If we had wasted ammunition like this we would have been in trouble because in the field you wouldn't be guaranteed when you would be resupplied due to the obvious confusion and unpredictability of a combat situation. This is one of the reasons why after WW2, where one would think Automatic and semi-automatic finally had come into its own, the British Army decided to invest in a "self-loading rifle", the FN-FAL which they purchased and modified. There were no automatic function at all on those early standard rifles (for the British anyways). I dont think they ever changed their semi-auto principle, except some rifles that were converted to auto as a Squad Automatic Weapon, until the SA came along.

Soldiers today would still do it, if the magazines weren't so high in capacity and the receivers of their rifles would allow it. Australian soldiers even sometimes use chargers to load it's 30 round mags for their F88 by detaching it, loading it with a 30/42 round charger, than reloading.

Reloading and manipulating a weapon to replace a magazine means the muzzle is bound to wander around a lot. If you've got one in the chamber and reloading... You can expect an accidental discharge, especially in a combat zone. This is very dangerous for the shooter and those around him. And, it brings no advantages. Some rifles can't even do it.

@initvesa Yes, it is quite likely. Because most firearms are more compact these days, the magazine releases are often quite close to the trigger. It's easy to snag another finger or something on the trigger whilst the rifle's loaded. Also, one thing I didn't mention was the fact that the closed bolt presses down on the magazine whilst it's fully loaded, which tends to cause misfeeds because of too much spring tension in the magazine. This is a problem I've seen a lot with a CZ452's 10 round mag.
@initvesa It doesn't take that long to pull the bolt back and forward, as you can see in most Lee Enfield Mad Minute videos, and that's using a rotary bolt. Most military firearms today have a straight pull that rotates the bolt for you, making it faster still. It honestly isn't much a problem.
And it doesn't take long. Charger loading IS faster because it's less clumsy, magazines have to be placed in neatly, the right way and such. Chargers you just sit it there, push down, close bolt, done.

The Lee Enfield is as good a rifle as any I've ever fired. Reliable, rugged, low maintenance, and accurate. A fast fire rate is good, but accuracy is much more important than speed. Fortunately the Lee Enfield is good for both.

@aspoonmanofilms The Enfield fired faster and had a larger magazine capacity than the K98, but the Mauser is way more robust, less prone to jamming and has a much better safety mechanism. As a war winning weapon, I would give the edge to the Enfield (the M1 Garand beats all of them in that regard, however) but there's a reason why the Mauser98 is the most widely copied bolt action rifle in the world. It's simply the best bolst action ever designed.

The Lee Enfield is as good a rifle as any I've ever fired. Reliable, rugged, low maintenance, and accurate. A fast fire rate is good, but accuracy is much more important than speed. Fortunately the Lee Enfield is good for both.

The .30-06 is .308 bore and the .303 Brit is .311 bore by most conventions, to set straight somebody below that gave false info. Also, most countries measure bore from groove to groove, while the Brits measured bore from land to land. The 7mm Mauser is .284 bore, but under Brit convention it is .275 bore. Thus the 7x57 Mauser became the .275 Rigby in commercial game rifles used by Brits. This is to be expected from a people who drive on the left side of the road while most countries don't.

@aspoonmanofilms The Enfield fired faster and had a larger magazine capacity than the K98, but the Mauser is way more robust, less prone to jamming and has a much better safety mechanism. As a war winning weapon, I would give the edge to the Enfield (the M1 Garand beats all of them in that regard, however) but there's a reason why the Mauser98 is the most widely copied bolt action rifle in the world. It's simply the best bolst action ever designed.

30-06 is a .30 calibre round, British .303 is a .303 calibre round (a bigger bullet).
M1 has 8-round magazine, Lee Enfield has 10.
"Mad Minute" AIMED rates of fire over 200 yards are very close (mainly due to the larger magazine in the Lee Enfield).
Loose rounds can be used to top up the Lee Enfield - can't do that on an M1...
As for shifting position: Its action is so smooth and light, it's very possible to cycle the Lee Enfield without coming off-aim - I've done it.

During WWII the British soldiers could fire the Enfield No. 4 rifle so fast, the Germans thought the Tommies were all armed w/ machine guns. Nice demonstration. The bolt action on an Enfield is extremely smooth & fast.
