Burning the filter flaws the experiment. Not to mention, there's a hundred or more things I could put in a test tube over a bunson and get similar or at least visually "gross" effects.... It's a fact that cigarettes have tar in them, so what's the big revelation here?? Just curious...Put some caramel in a test tube and see how that reacts, see how many will stop eating caramel after they see how gross that turns out..........JM
@scareaffair Get a boiling tube, bung, retort stand, boss, clamp, Bunsen burne, tongsr. Clamp tube onto stand above burner in a fume cabinet. Insert cigarette and *loosely* insert bung, so that gas can escape. Light burner and a adjust to a quiet blue flame. Remove heat once tobacco has combusted. Remember to allow things to cool before you handle them with the hands -- until then, use tongs.
@zdlol A bit of imprecision with the Bunsen flame. As you can see, I withdrew the flame when the filter started to burn, by which time there was already a lot of tar condensate in the tube.
All i have to say is: If you can still justify that smoking is or not that bad after seeing this, you deserve to die. so keep smoking, cancer is just around the corner with every puff tobacco.
@duhkulavision Yes, please do use it. Only condition I would ask is that you only present it as what happens when you burn a cigarette in a test tube. The demonstration is an indication only that a cigarette contains tar; an inference is that *some* of this may condense in the smoker's lungs.
im so glad i dont smoke cigarettes its drug habbit that has no high so why do people smoke it if its pointless to smoke it plus my grandma is in the hospital right now cause of smoking cigarettes
keep in mind the yellow tarry stuff isnt put under a flame when it is already in your lungs, like in this video, but this still shows how nasty just one cig can be
@Testes1717 Indeed not; the yellow tarry stuff in the test tube has condensed from the smoke. I wouldn't want *any* of it condensing in my lungs. I have seen sections of smokers' lungs -- the colour is consistent with condensed tar and chemical analysis confirms that tar is present.
@tetenterre im not disregarding the fact that there is any tar at all, and btw i am not a smoker or cigarettes and never will be, i just thought it was something to note because it looks like the tarry stuff would only be that shade of yellow without the extra heat
fuk smoking smoking r for noobs they think its so cool n stuff but its not it is not true SMOKING IS NOT COOL!!!!!PEOPLE WHO DONT SMOKE R VERY COOL!!!!!!! AT LEAST MY FATHER QUITET SMOKING ALREADY, AND IF U SMOKERS OUT THERE WANNA DIE U GO AHEAD MY UNCLE HAD PAST AWAY ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO BCUZ OF SMOKING
keep in mind the avg. smoker hits a cig 7-14 times and exhales instantly after they hit it.. Show me someone with lungs as small as that beaker who would smoke an entire cig in one hit and hold it in for 2min 44 seconds and this would be an accurate depiction of what would be in your lungs.
This video is posted in the educational category, so please be accurate with your experiments.
Yes, smoking is unhealthy, but SCARE TACTICS DON'T WORK, AND THEY DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD
@deerpard If you are going to comment on science, you may wish to hone your powers of observation and learn a little about the nature of experiments/demonstrations.
4. Experiments are neither accurate not inaccurate -- it is the observations and inferences that are drawn from those observations that can be described as accurate or inaccurate, but the experiment merely "is".
@deerpard This particular demonstration is merely an indication that a cigarette contains tar; an inference is that some of this may condense in the smoker's lungs. Nowhere is there a statement that it all does. Doing it this way is, I suggest, a tad more "accessible" than trying to obtain a section of smoker's lung.
@MrCerialKiller Sorry so long to reply. No, I don't have such a video. If you are concerned that the filter may be the source of the tar, then (a) observe how the tar is formed in the video, or (b) you can try burning filters and see what happens, or (c) read the literature on tar in tobacco and smokers' lungs.
I haven't had a cigarette since may 2008, and its thanks to a video similar to this one. Hopefully more people will be exposed to demonstrations like this one and have an opportunity to see the disgusting reality of whats actually going into their bodies.
que pendejos son todos la nicotina sale apartir del fuego que convierte a la sustancia de manera directa, no por medio del calor... si ponen ahi una manzana van a ver como sucede algo similar... pendejos de mierda.

@Testes1717 OK, noted. Thanks for the clarification. Can't really comment on that, because I haven't tried it without the "extra heat". :-)

SMOKING KILLS!!!

but still, smoking is pointless
iKiieee 1 year ago
yeah ok it shows how much stuff comes off the cigarette but probably about 80% doesnt go into your body. it goes into the atmosphere through smoke
iKiieee 1 year ago
@iKiieee Hmmm -- I suspect it's not even as much as 20% (and it must vary enormously from smoker to smoker), but see my reply to @Testes1717 (above)

@deerpard If you are going to comment on science, you may wish to hone your powers of observation and learn a little about the nature of experiments/demonstrations.
1. There is no beaker.
2. The cigarette is heated for 1:09, not 2:44.
3. Most smokers do not exhale "instantly".
4. Experiments are neither accurate not inaccurate -- it is the observations and inferences that are drawn from those observations that can be described as accurate or inaccurate, but the experiment merely "is".
