  • My Lp of this just crumbled as I pulled it out of the sleeve! Many thanks for uploading this~

  • I have a copy of this song in the archives - It's so catchy that I find myself humming this and the other tune on the other side "Five Minutes To Twelve" :)

Apparently Jack Payne was the main artist for Imperial at the time...

  • Very nice record! Say, what kind of machine are you playing?

  • very nice..enjoyed it

  • When i stay in my favourite Viennese Hotel,i request the balcony suite and as the lights twinkle and the moon and the stars light the sky,i play this on my portable grand(i never travel with out it)

  • Not so many tangos uploaded amongst dance band fans.A fine version as would be expected.I alwaysd think of John Thorne as a twenties vocalist.

  • Wow this is a very unique sound. This sounds very different to the music i have heard of Jack Payne. He seems to be able to perform in any style very well.

  • Jack was 'THE' Maestro.

  • Excellent, and John Thorne is in fine form here. One of the more overlooked dance band vocalists it seems, and undeservedly so. I'm always on the lookout for records with vocals by him. I had no idea that he recorded with Jack Payne?

  • Very nice I love Jack Payne

    Richard :)

  • Love this anecdote!. Somehow I always seem to think of Rigsby's cat from 'Rising Damp' when I hear this tune!. A crazy association I know!.

  • Delightful version.

A little story I heard re. "Goodnight Vienna". The composer, George Posford was travelling through Rotherham in the

1950's & noticed a local amateur dramatic society were performing "Goodnight Vienna". He enquired at the box office how the show was doing. The lady there replied "It's doing about as well as "Goodnight Rotherham" would do in Vienna!"

This is definitely not a "Goodnight Rotherham" performance.

  • I heard a similar story but it involved Jack Buchanan asking the Manager of a Huddersfield Cinema how the film version of 'Goodnight Vienna' was doing in Huddersfield. The reply came back "about as well as Goodnight Huddersfield would go in Vienna" !!
