I have done the same approach in the 757. It was one of my favorites!!! Kudos to the FO for the excellent heavy visual approach. Stuff like this reminds the pilot to fly the damn airplane first!!!
@Chappygolucky6 PHNG. Was working a military charter bringing some Marines home a couple years ago. Anymore questions or comments from the peanut gallery?
That's NOT a circling approach.. that's a simple Base to final type leg.. a Circling approach takes you first over the field so you can get your bearings then a 270 degree turn (assuming you come x-ways of the runway as you need to be) into a circling final approach.. That's an old style military approach before instruments were in wide use.
This was a VOR approach to rwy 22 circle to 4. A circling approach does not require an overflight of the field, so in this case the crew began circling prior to reaching the field, once they were in their protected circling radius from the airport.
@heshamaly1 Yup exactly, there aren't any published straight ins to 4, probably because the 3000' mountain is in the way, so you have to circle out of an approach to 22. Good stuff.
hello, well done, very stable from key position.

First Officer needs to raise up his seat so he can see over the dash, especially if he's the PIC which in this case he was!

@heshamaly1 You are right on about that, we do a circle to land on SFO 1R from a straight in to SFO28L, never fly over the runway til touchdown.

@TheMemphisSlim heshamaly is exactly right. There are many techniques for circling.

Okay, then why did they circle before minimums? I'll give you a hint. It wasn't a circling approach.

Nicely done.
I don't like the annunciator "chick's" voice - robotic and PMS sounding.
In the F-18 "she" sounds sexy. "Altitude" sounds like an invitation for oral sex!
