This is from a 1979 HBO special which was hosted by Carl Reiner highlighting undiscovered talent, though I forget the name (something like 'Carl Reiner's Best Bets', 'Carl Reiner's Best Picks' or'Carl Reiner's Sneak Peeks') As I recall another guest on this show was a then unknown comic named Pee Wee Herman. Thanks for posting this, been wanting to see it again for a while.
Actually...no. You're thinking of when they were on The Gong Show in 197...6? Maybe? Anyway, this is from an HBO special, whose name I can't remember AT ALL, but it had some comedy troupe doing sketches, some stand-up, and the Oingo Boingo performances scattered through it. Kind-of like a taped live SNL for HBO (but only had one episode).
This is Oingo Boingo footage and not of The Mystic Knights. Compare this to the Urgh! A Music War footage, which was shot in 1980. Notice how David Eagle plays drums on the Urgh footage and how Johnny Vatos is in this footage. That would put this performance of having taken place in 1981. The same year Eagle left and Vatos joined. It's also during the same time of the Madam Wong shows, which is when both of these songs were heavily played. Probably shortly before Only A Lad was recorded.
This is prolly from 1979. Is this their first show as Oingo Boingo after previously being the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo?
I know it's a Beach Boys cover, but I like the chanting/simultaneous voice thing they do towards the end of the song. I know the Beach Boys didn't do that. :-)
This is amazing. It captures that rare transitional period from the Mystic Knights to Oingo Boingo. Got to be '79 with Hatch there and Miriam Cutler already gone.
Thanks for the comments on the video. Glad you all like it. I was editing video tapes to DVD and came across this. Something I had recorded in the late 70's I believe. Check out my other video of OB doing Louise.
HOLY HELL!! I could go on forever about all the things I love about this video--they mostly boil down to Danny being adorable though. I've always adored their cover of California Girls. Thank you so much for posting!!!!

*Dies laughing* Oh. My. GOD. Thank you SO much for sharing that. That was perhaps one of the cutest, funniest, weirdest things I've ever seen.
Their take on this song is genius. Love it.

This is from a Star Search-type show they appeared on in 1979 in which they also played "Louise." They won the competition.

This is interesting seeing a somewhat unsure young Danny try to find his stage presence.

Which year is it??
Mabledable 2 years ago
I'm guessing this is on George Segal, which would have been 1978. Louise was also performed.
Despina838 2 years ago
I don't know about that. Kerry didn't join until 1979.
OingoBoingoFan 2 years ago
Ah, then it must have been '79. One site I saw listed this video as being from 1978, and then I saw another one that said 1979.
