  • Volume full, sustain full, tone 0 with dry switch engaged

  • has anyone tried it with a guitar? im curious as to how it would sound.

  • I want this so I can almost replicate the sound Chris from Muse gets (The Muffed sound alone with a different clean bass sound) while only using one amp, seems to do that quite nicely, if your not sure what i'm on about listen to Knights of Cydonia carefully during the verse you'll hear what I mean

  • @MELIKESGUITAR I would look else where, though if you want JUST the KoC sound this will do it with a blend added. I'm a bit of a tech nut so know chris's set up pretty well!

  • Stoner metal bass.. Yep..

  • Shut the fuck up and PLAAAYYYYYY

  • you can get both(clean and muff) if you have a rickenbacker...dont they have to guitar jack output for both the pickups so one pickup could be wired with this and the other can go clean , though i assume you would need two different amps! but it can be done!

  • What do you think is better? The bass big muff or the little big muff?

  • as if its manufactured in the US then is it usable with a 230 volt socket in europe? cuz americans use 110 volt :D

  • How would do you compare this muff to the Russian? I've been looking for a Russian but I was wondering your thoughts on the two.

  • @bassplayer4Christ Which Russian?

  • @grygrx The Russian Big Muff Pi, I know they have been discontinued but I am willing to pay a lil extra and I just wanted to know how this Muff compared to that one.

  • 3:35 is almost Kasabian - Vlad the Impaler.

  • COOOOOOOOOOOLL VERY COOLL EVERYONE GO TO THE HELL

  • I have no real idea about how this stuff works yet. If i get one of these do i plug my bass into the input and then connect the output to my amp? or do u have to have something else? lol

  • Pretty much just the intro to this video sold me on this pedal.

  • What I would like to find is the Russian (Sovtek) Green Big Muff Pi for Bass

  • The tone knob is a frequency shift? What the fuck? It's a bass/treble cut, depending on the way you have it set.

  • hey im kinda looking to get the cliff burton fuzzy wah sound on a budget. what does anyone recomend for a muff pedal and a wah pedal to go with it ???? kinda swinging the way of a little big muff with a cheap guitar pedal will this work. cheers

  • i think the 'dry' mode should be called 'blended'

  • Sorry Guy's but between a Line 6 DM4 and a Bass Big Muff sound, what dou you choose?

  • This guy says you can't blend, but I have this pedal and simply reading the instructions it's made clear that in the dry mode you have a dry signal and then the volume knob controls how much fuzz is added to your dry signal. That is what you are blending.

  • hi im looking for peter steele like tone, like the distortion and chorus basically! Well im wondering if anyone can help or knows what all his rig consisted of? Thanks!

  • had this pedal for awhile. i find the dry mode to be useless. the other two modes are very versatile though.

  • I ordered one a couple of days ago. Seems pretty good for the price, I can't wait for it to come in.

  • Skip to 3.06 to avoid introductory waffle

  • 7:30 if you want to just hear the blend.

  • @logicmemorysystems thanks!

  • i play guitar & i found one of these pedals for like 40bux & i use it on my guitar and sounds pretty good haha

  • Yeah but the Big Muff gets a similar sound.

  • are there diferent versions? There's an army green and a brighter green version, it seems?

  • The version in the lighter green is the "Pi" version.

  • can anyone tell me whats better? a big muff or a blogger? im thinking of buying one of them

  • big muff pi fuzzz broder.. its better.. blogger.. asco!

    ;)

  • YE he does it is acctualy pwnage

  • I've heard it's the same circuit as the russian big muff from the early 90s...is that true?

  • in your opinion which is better for bass, Bass Muff OR Russian Big Muff? Chris from Muse uses a Russian, is this a better choice if i had to choose between one of them?

  • i think the russian is better...

  • for a while people used the ruskie big muffs because of the extended low end range that it offered, then EHX realized they need to get on board with us bassists and designed the big bass muff pi. so chris probably has his russian big muff either because 1. he modified it (we would've heard about it if he did) or 2. because that's what he's always used

  • The black Russian Big Muff should generally be avoided. It's a very poorly built out of cheap components. The distortion sounds cool, but it doesn't make up for the flaws, like the lack of a true bypass and the fact that it WILL fall apart in less than a year. If for some reason you don't want to buy the Bass one (which seems far superior based on this demo), AT LEAST consider the American model, it's much better constructed.

  • Just and FYI. The newer Black Russian Muffs do have true bypass (it was added at some point). Not saying they are perfect, but that is at least one issue that was fixed.

  • I was unaware of that. I have played a few, including my own that I bought in probably 1999 or so, and neither of them had true-bypass. That's good to hear that eventually they dealt with that. A Russian Muff with True Bypass probably wouldn't be half bad.

  • hey my big muff pi came today. one big problem, at full everything it doesnt sound atall as distorted like it should, it sounds less than half on yours. help?

  • His input is just too loud, he as amateur recording equipment.

  • @tomheather If your bass has low output pickups, they won't distort as much as those with a higher output

  • The black Russian Big Muff, should not be avoided, i bought one not too long ago, and it does have true bypass? It also sounds better than the other in my opinion cause it has a crunchier sound, only my opinion though.

  • As I said in another reply, I was unaware that the Russian Muff had been updated with true bypass in recent years. To me, that makes a pretty big difference. If somebody can get a russian muff with true bypass, then it might actually be pretty useful. I still stand behind my statement that they are very cheaply put together pedals, or at least they were in the late 90s, early 2000s.

  • If you're suggesting the USA model as a decent alternative, you don't know what you're talking about. The USA model does not sound like a classic muff. It sounds like fizzy grossness. A lot of the great albums were made with Russian NON-true bypass muffs. The Green Russian of the early 90's is the greatest IMO. You can get Gilmour or Corgan with it - both brilliant tones. No one's doing anything important with the new USA ones... at least the Russian one has the same circuit as back in the day.

  • The newest Russians have true bypass and 9v adapter capability. Buy one of those and change out a few pieces for a few dollars. Don't pay twice as much for the American one. Not worth it.

  • I had a black russian, it broke in a week and I had it replaced with another black russian..the second one has lasted me 10 years.

  • @notjason I have to agree, mine had to be repaired after only 6 months of gentle home use because something came loose. Also it's SUPER annoying that the thing drains batteries even when it's not on or plugged into anything. You forget to take out the battery once, and they'll be dead by the morning.

  • @notjason i have the russian big muff pi, it does have true bypass i have no idea what the fuck you're on about, and i've had it for 3 years :/ get your facts right before you start bagging amazing pedals.

  • @MigelMeUp Oh my lord, we've been through this already. Apparently, newer Russian Big Muffs have true bypass, but the older ones DEFINITELY did not. I know from experience personally using at least 3 of the old Russian Big Muffs that they were huge tone-suckers when turned off. I had to personally modify mine in order to give it true bypass and 9v adapter compatibility. If you bought yours just three years ago, it's probably one of the newer ones.

  • @notjason

Well that explains alot. I remember when I first started out with bass I heard loads of good things of russian muffs. So I found a black one used and tried it and it sounded pretty lame. Then I never tried a big muff again but I just ordered a Bass Big Muff and I'm sure it'll be better suited for me.

  • @notjason american model might be better constructed but its suck the bass out of the bass

  • @robdelabassist I don't disagree that the standard American sucks the bass out of your tone, but my experience with the Russian model hasn't been any different. It's got slightly higher volume output, and more bite, but it disappears just as quick when you put it in a full mix. The bass specific model advertised in this video has been the only "big muff" I've played that hasn't robbed my low end.

  • @notjason by sucks the bass out of the bass i meant it takes alot off the low ends, i should know because i've had one

  • @robdelabassist Yeah, I knew exactly what you meant. My experience is that both the standard American and the Russian one are guilty of that. The true test is playing live with them and putting them up against drums and a couple guitars. Both of them act like a guitar pedal, and tend to roll off your low end. The way I got around this with my American one was just to turn it up REALLY loud. My friend used a Russian one in his band, and if anything, it seemed worse. To my ears at least.

  • @notjason my bass big muff is doing well for me in my band, defo keeps the low end

  • @robdelabassist I am also really happy with my Bass Big Muff. Both the bass boost and dry modes are excellent.

  • @notjason from what ive heard of the russian one its more responsive to low ends than the US one, big bass muff works a treat for keeping full low ends

  • @notjason i have the fussian big muff, works fine to me, gives me a crisp while smooth sound to it, the new york ones are just differently made but you cant get the russian sound with them. BUt im not trying to talk down on the muffs, cuz ill play any one

  • @6ftUnder92592 i really wish they were still making russians they hold low ends really nicely

  • @FunkKlock end the pedal has to offeri ts kind of a mix. wich comes out great dude, i highly recomeend. they dont make them any morebiut you can still find them. and if you want. people say the american big muff works good too. but if you want the cliff sound the russian is the best to go with man

  • @6ftUnder92592 wish me luck finding one

  • Nice demo. I definitely want one of these.

  • Thank you, very good ;)

  • Bi-amping is when you split the signal to two different speaker cabs.

For example, I have a 4x10 cab and a 15" cab. I could send anything below, say 60 hertz, to the 15" speaker, and any frequency above that will be sent to the 4x10.

However, I've not seen it done in a while. I don't know of too many bass players that do it, myself included. The tone brightens up a bit, and lends to a more "separated" sound. It's cool if you like a modern jazz type sound.

  • Bi-amping is actually when you send your signal to 2 seperate amps and usually eq them differently. its good if you like a thin fuzzy sound but still want to feel the bass go through your ribcage.

  • what is a dry signal? and by-amping?

sorry i'm new to effects and i don't know much about the signals and waves and stuff

  • i think bi-amping is sending the signal to 2 amps at a time, just guessing tho

  • I'm pretty sure i'm getting one soon, and i'm wondering does this work w/ any amp? i mean i'm only worried because i have a wimpy Fender Rumble 15 Watt amp.

  • i have it and it's pretty good. also i should say that when you play over an amp, it doesn't sound as annoyingly fizzy as it does here.. i mostly have the tone knob turned all the way up, volume too, and sustain at about half, which gives you a fat, but biting fuzz sound that doesn't take all your bass frequencies away.

btw, i only use the normal mode (so i could've just bought a standard big muff, d'oh!), the bass boost/dry modes are no good.

  • great video!!

is the same pedal of the bass of raconteurs??

    thanks!!!

  • how would you make a boss obd3 sould like a bass big muff?

  • Take it back to the shop and spend the money on a big muff?

  • Comment removed

  • it sounds awesome with all knobs turned up and on bass mode!

  • Thanks for this. You've convinced me to stick with the Russian Big Muff (I already have) and not bother with getting the "Bass" version. The bass version doesn't seem better. The Russian is great for bass already.

  • I want to play punk '77 and HC punk alone...only fuzz bass and voice...is it good to "simulate" a guitar?

  • No.

  • watch?v=Q64g7dTcsXA

That eq-sweep control might yield what you're looking for.... The guy doesn't give the best demo but shows the potential....

  • mate you need to sort your mic out

  • so is it good for death metal? cuz i have the ODB-3 and its terrible for death metal.

  • bands like NIN and Muse use this type of pedal for the bass, donno if its gonna be good for death metal

  • yea, muse uses this pedal in time is running out and in hysteria mainly

  • i doubt it,i think overdrive would be better than fuzz

  • Fuzz will work fine. Just make sure you don't use fingers with fuzz, it'll get to bassy and you won't cut through. On a Big Muff like this keep the gain low for minimum fuzz.

  • fuzz is way too muddy for death metal. get a boss metal zone or dod/digitech death metal.

  • i have pretty much the same question as

awobblychair......is the bass big muff pi heavier and does it produce more distortion than the boss odb-3? thx

  • It's a matter of taste. The ODB-3 can do a fizzier with more sizzle sound than this (or any) muff. I think the muff sounds darker and heavier on most settings. If you find an ODB-3 sample to compare to, it should be pretty obvious which suits you better.

  • @masterofpuppets186 I have both of them. I use the ODB-3 more mainly because i can do palm muting with it and it sounds great. If you try to palm mute with the Big muff it doesn't do much. The big muff is fuzz and the ODB-3 is overdrive/distortion. Basically if you want a great overdrive/distortion go with ODB-3 but if you want a great fuzz go with the Big muff.

  • im gettign this, with my Squire Vintage Modified Precision bass and a feder amp. I play Muse-like stuff, and i myself prefer a lot of fuzz

  • Great Video.

I"m looking into buying one of these since

I have the Boss ODB-3 and I don't feel it's cutting it with the fuzz it produces. Does the muff produce more fuzz? Which do you prefer and is it worth swapping them out or is it a minimal difference?

    Thanks

    -Ivan

  • why is it named after another term for vagina known as "muff?" but yea i'm gonna get 1 of these theyre only $80

  • Because its a fuzz pedal

fuzz-muff, ya get the relation? :)

This sounds cool, but a little too "gutsy" for me. I like the Russian Big Muff personally (the black and yellow pedal), its smoother/cleaner and not as ratty sounding as the NYC or this model, also its hella cheap. Gives more of a lead sound than all out fuzz.

  • Hrm.. I think the Bass Big Muff is a lowest gain / cleanest big muff from EHX to date. Different strokes I guess.

  • the first muff sounded muffled, that;t where the muff name came from.

  • how much do you bought and what country you bought from/ you lives in? o.o

  • You must try the Zvex Mammoth Fuzz, if you have not, I like as much as my Fuzz Factory....

  • Yeah, I have one. It will likely be my next review.

  • Hi, how good is this compared to the mammoth from zvex? It's really worth expending that kind of money in the mammoth?

    Thanks for the reply

  • Imagine fuzz like wine, there are whites and reds as basics and then each category has tons of varietals and production methods.

The muff (as a pedal group) tends to be rich in harmonics, sustain, and smoothness, and normally presents a midscoop.

The mammoth is harsh, industrial, and gated. It's character is a lot more brash. A mammoth pretty much ALWAYS sounds like a mammoth

Worth it to me, but not worth it if you can't tell white from red

    :)

  • i really enjoy fuzz bass and i like the reviews on your site. where did you manage to find a zvex woolly mammoth tho? did it cost you anything or did you borrow it?

  • this could have been a 3 min. video....use that imac and edit...thanks for a lengthy review...; )

  • I'll never be brief, but my newer videos are a lot tighter... I hope.

  • I would like to see the review of the russian big muff too... it would be nice

  • can you do a similar review but with the Russian muff?

  • hey, you actually CAN control the dry/wet mix. when it is in dry mode, the volume knob only controls the distortion, while the clean goes through at whatever volume it normally comes from your bass.

  • What is the difference between this pedal and say the Boss ODB 3 bass pedal??

What would you say was the better buy too.

    Thanks!

  • Well, first off they sound very different. Other obvious differences are that the boss is a digital pedal w/a buffered bypass and the Ehx is an analogue pedal with true bypass.

I vastly prefer the Bass Big Muff, so it would be a better buy at twice the price.

  • I got it, and I love it

  • its supposed to model more of a russian big muff not the US one

  • You dont need a ''Bass muff '' To gett a good noise.

  • i just bought one of these

  • is it good?

  • yes

  • Great video, thanks man. Interested to try one of these out.

  • Is there any downfall if i play my bass with a pick as opposed to using my thumbs?

  • its all up to you, play the way you like to

  • thx

  • they both give different styles which have their own positives, but it's up to you to decide what's comfortable and/or what sort of sound you want...:P

  • yeah, its all about the sound, you can work it better with fingers but you get a nice gritty tone with a pick

  • Rabid misinformation. This pedal didn't exist while Cliff was alive.

  • yeh. this pedal is really knew. there's no way he used it.

  • what do you think of the behringer clone? is it worth buying?

  • I have no experience with it.

  • the behringer clone is a clone of the NYC version which doesnt not sound good with bass at all...at least i think to.

  • how would this sound on a guitar?

  • bassy? xD

  • incredible...

  • Nice Demo!! Very Nice Work!!!

  • this makes me want to not buy the pedal.

  • hence why it is an overview and NOT an advertisement.

  • Without meaning to diss the reviewer, I agree. Your clean tone isn't too nice, the playing doesn't show off the pedal to the best of its ability and the recording quality isn't great.

Things to change next time, is all!

  • This is probably the worst video I have ever seen on YouTube.

  • what are you talking about? It's a perfectly descent review of a pedal...

  • The delivery is terrible, and the general overview isn't very well thought out. He says himself that he could have scripted it better, I would happen to agree. Your spelling could do with improvement too.

  • the critic lives.... sorry I can't make you happy. I'm only me. I have fun, I like bass, I like fuzz, and I like to share. Though if you think this is the WORST video, you need to do some more watching....

  • dude dont listen... your review is great!

with fuzz are you using in the introduction of eacth review?? I like how it sounds

  • *WHICH

  • The introduction is recorded with a D*A*M RamHead Fuzz and a Rob Allen Fretless Bass.

  • there are a lot worse to find here on youtube, of course it could have been better, but as i said perfectly descent... oh yeah, of course my spelling could do better: i'm danish... how well do you spell languages you aren't native with?

  • Maybe there are, but as stated it's the worst video I'VE seen, I never said it was THE WORST on here. And sorry, that was uncalled for. But since you asked I'm not too bad with French.

  • that's okay... and btw i'm pretty good compared to most of my friends (not sure wether that say more about me or them :D)

  • in the end, he is doing something for the rest of the community that you are not. lay off and stfu. he is actually funny and not a robot like many others anyways...

  • What, are you his boyfriend? Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Say I *wanted* to make video reviews, I'd try to ensure I presented myself as well as possible - and not as some joker with a camera.

  • sorry about my translation....

  • I have had some 2 months and is a great pedal, it not big fuzz or gain as the others but it has a lot of low end (not like the other), it was just what I was looking for . I read somewhere that the bassist Muse uses two AMP , one clean and one Muffed,

  • Chris is using two Russian Big muffs, one with sustain 7 o'clock and tone 7 o'clock and one with sustain 10 o'clock and tone 10 o'clock.

  • and double (or triple nowadays, not sure) amps

  • Now we're talkin' :)

  • sweet...

  • spread shit don't help

  • you can do the same with this pedal in the dry mode the difference is you can do that with a single AMP I have mixed with everything I have been crossed on my way in this mode (Delay, BassBalls, octave, overdrive, phaser chorus) and sounds great whit all

    alone is not worth it

but whit something else its great

I have all the others muffs its not the best but work better whit bass

  • baassfuuuzz dot coooumm, yeaaaahh!

  • great post

  • DI'd?????

  • is it expensive?

  • About $75

  • Is this just straight DI'd?

  • bass -> cable -> muff -> cable -> di

  • Wow, that p's got amazing tone. Vintage Modified? I'm not crazy about the bm's tone though. Kinda muted sounding. I like really compressed, high end fuzz.

  • You're wrong about the fixed blend ratio thing - in dry mode, the clean volume of your bass is unaffected. The volume knob controls the amount of fuzz in the mix. Good review apart from that point though!

  • Great work. I love your review. Thks to upload it.

  • Don't worry about the stutter/talking that everyones complaining about. I thought it was informative. Nice pedal too!

  • love the singing at the end lol

  • Can you use this with a guitar?
