  • 13 people don't even know how to hold the trombone, let alone dislike this video

  • I remember playing this as a kid although, to be fair, not quite as well as that!

  • His tone is GODLY at the beginning

  • As a fan of both classical and jazz, I love both versions. :)

  • I bet he was sight reading..

  • He makes the fast section sound much easier than it really is lol

  • what a bro

  • That isn't Joseph Alessi, it's so obvious...

  • if you've never heard this guy play live, then you are so missing out.

  • Yeah he's a fantastic trombonist but lets be honest here, the eyebrows are what make this video :L

  • IS AMAZING ...The BEST trombon player in the Worl Joe Alessi ....

  • @MegaTromboneman Keep in mind, he could have just as easily done the whole thing single-tonguing if he had wanted to and still made it sound better than most people.

  • its amazing how such small people come to be the best of them all.

  • c'est top et c'est joli !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks

  • What fantasy is this? Who's it by?

  • @70mile It's the Malcom-Arnold Fantasy

  • @70mile it's mine and probably every other trombonists in the world's fantasy to play as well as these 2

  • It just sucks that the microphone they used wasn't that good. It distorts his sound and makes it seem to brash...and flat...when it obviously isn't.

  • awesome i play trombone for 4 years and never dreamed of playin somethin like that

  • he's coming to murray on the 24th :D

  • ugh hes so bad! im better!

  • INCREDIBLE

  • Every time I feel good about my trombone technique, I watch Joe Alessi and feel like throwing the damn horn off a cliff.

  • geeez, so smooth

  • wycliffe made more difficult for this piece.. such a great piece..

  • I want to play as well as he does. Well? Never!!! that's perfect!!!! I wish I have that sound and technic!!!! And I agree, we'll suck for ever if we don't move the eyebrows a LOT!!!

  • I like his eye brows. They move alot haha

  • @grayson583 To become a great trombonist, you'll have to move your eye brows ALOT ;)

  • @wallstore Someone told me I did that a lot when I play trombone the other day. I never realized it, but it's true =P

  • @wallstore Damn Right!! lol move you eye brows or you will suck forever

  • @grayson583 Ben Van Dijk's too ;)

  • I wish I could let myself slow down for the touchy passages like this guy does...

  • Joe Alessi - Trumping Virtuosos for more than 30 years straight

  • I had the chance to see him on sunday, but I missed out

  • А последнее си-бемоль контроктавы высоковато было... Хотелось бы пониже...

  • If I ever play that loud, even if its with a good tone during rehearsal, my band director would rip my freakin head off, and Joe gets paid a crapload of money to do it. Not fair. haha.

  • LOL, joe is also one of the best trombone players in this universe XD

  • @cellofellow1223 I would say one of the best in the multiverse, but there must exist at least one universe where he's bad...

  • @cellofellow1223 haha yeah, my director is just like, ahhh i hear trombone, its automatically bad. He's especially like that with bass trombone. Some people just dont appreciate gods instrument. :P

  • I bet he was a wiz a marching band xD

  • he plays amazingly, but is he blasting the low notes or is it just the sound?

im not a big fan of blasting.

but i agree stickywick12, he has amazing lung capacity.

  • @BandGeek0316 Low quality microphone on the camera, that's all. He's god one of the fattest tone for a tenor trombone in the low range of the instrument

  • blasting is fun on trombone tho it makes you high

  • hahaha

  • it's not that he has incredible lung capacity, it's that he breathes in between phrases so quickly that you don't really notice it, he's incredible.

  • around 2 50 he does that nice

  • amazing he has such lung capacity with how short he is.

  • yeah he is. hes like 5'6".

  • @stickywick12 Not really. When a wind instrument is something you've done your whole life, especially to such a professional level as Alessi's at, your entire chest cavity is basically replaced with the most beastly respiratory system (lungs, diaphragm, and a sick-nasty flexible ribcage) ever.

  • @PancakesoftheLove You can't expand your lungs, you just learn how to utilize them to their fullest extent.

  • @Hettbone1 I wasn't saying you actually expand your lungs...

  • @PancakesoftheLove Sorry, that's what it looked like to me.

  • @Hettbone1 its called diaphragmatic brething you use your diaphragm.

  • It's about a classical approach and a jazz approach. They are two different musicians with different styles. It's just to showcase their difference in thinking music from the same chart.

  • Comment removed

  • both come from different styles of trombone playing. You really can't compare one as better than the other. They are both extremely talented. You aren't going to see Wycliffe play every single note as written on the page perfect, or Joe rip out some funky double harmonic riffs on his bone

  • yeah wycliffe makes it jazzy

  • fantastico! cm sempre....

  • your awesome iwish i could play like you =(

  • 5"6 is tiny, but his sound is gigantic

  • hey im 5"6 on bass =/

  • Nothing wrong with height I didnt mean to sound condescending, sorry

  • o im just kiddin lol

  • hey michale what"s up?

  • my sectionals teacher in band told me to look this up.

  • this guy plays it better than wycliffe gordon

  • let's say different.

They're too different as anyone can evaluate them

  • maybe plays the song better but wycliffe has the feeling

  • This definetley doesn't do him justice... still great, but maybe he wasn't properly warmed up or something?

  • its just a crappy recording.

i saw him in real life. Professional recordings dont even sound like him live. He's way better, and if he comes around town go see him.

    short guy lol

  • how tall is he?

  • hes around 5'6" hes a big guy.

    about my height

  • Hearing him in real life is like nothing else, its like twice the skill of my teacher and he is a world class freelance trombonist. They actually are quite good friends so possibly someday I will get to face to face talk to him.

  • honestly though,

if ur not paying 180$ for his lesson, he wont tell you jack.

  • Not true, I just emailed him and we had a great conversation. Did you know that he played trumpet for 3 years! And he has been playing proffessionally for over 30 years.

  • tremendo trombonista para mi el mejor qu existe en slide factory 2009 fuiste el mejor bravo allesi

  • a few days ago i got to meet jiggs whigham, hes not alessi when it comes to classical like this but hes great at soloing and jazz

  • you should look up Zoltan Kiss. he plays with the Mnozil Brass. look them up too. they're hilarious and quite talented!

  • when my HS jazz band went to the disney jazz celebration this year, jiggs whigham gave a clinic. It was amazing, he's phenomenal.

  • i tell you what. he sounds about 10000 better in live than any of the professional recordings.

you'll flip out cuz i did.

  • anyone notice that bad change at 2:03?

  • yeah, but nothing is perfect in teh world

  • So, ....what about it?

  • Comment removed

  • no one better

    =]

  • I think they should change the comment from great trombonist to greatest trombonist in the world...

  • Sticky,

You should check out Bill Watrous or JJ Johnson. Those are my picks for the best.

  • omg a 1 1/2 g =O

  • yea man. ive seen it. Greg Black 1. about the same as a Bach 1 1/2 g. its a freggin bucket

  • What about the mouthpiece, dosn't he play on one of his own sig models?

  • i know right?. XP he is a beast. and at that concert he played for over an hour with it.

  • Is he at the point where he can't improve?

  • I'm guessing not, there is always something that you can improve on. For example, have you ever listened to yourself(singing/playing something - im totally guessing that you do), there is always that something, that bugs you, no matter how well you think you played at the time. It may be that you should have held that one note longer to make it sound better, or increase the dynamic contrast on one part.. etc,

I am in no way saying this guy isnt good, he is amazing, just there is always something

  • love this piece. Learning to play it at the moment and I'm finding it impossible!

  • i talked to joe yesterday. that beast plays on a greg black 1. which is the size of a bach 1 1/2 g

  • i really dont like that guy in the 2nd row

  • I bet alessi hates all of these recordings of him on youtube

  • yes maybe he does but besides from these recordings he still is one of the best trombonists!!!

  • he does

  • this recording doesn't do him justice

  • This is amazing!

  • どうすればこんなに音に圧力がかかるのですか?

  • 6 hours renshu everyday.:)

  • renshu?

  • practice

  • oh ok. i thought it was a specific exercise or something.

  • he does a lot of scale work. stringing all the scales together in different ways in different patterns. like, from page 126 in Arban on.

  • if you posted a comment comparing alessi and lindberg you're gay!

  • Blasty.

  • he also uses a fairly large mouthpiece he customized which adds to that very wide and heavy sound. the inside rim diameter is the same as a bach 1 1/2g.

  • He actually has his own model Edwards trombone

  • What equipment does he play on? His horn sounds so heavy.

  • alessi uses a edwards t350e like the one im getting. :D

  • what doe the t3503e mean?

  • Tone is incredible! Perfect control and execution. If he had ANY mistakes in this, he covered them quite well! Great technique.

  • Well said bobrmack. Trying to rank them is just silly. There're two world class tromboners on stage. There's no meaningful comparison between the two. Apples n oranges ya know. Rare brilliance. Relax. Enjoy.

  • No, I believe a more accurate analogy would be macintosh apples to granny smith. It's all personal preference.

  • oh snap is that wycliffe in the beginning standing to his left?

  • yes.

  • is that alessi senior? cause that doesnt look like the alessi i know.. haha.

  • In fairness to alessi and lindbergh they are from two somewhat different worlds ones orchestral the other is soloist. And this song is off of the ITF "edwards" trombone choir music I played in stw great piece

  • Truckin fremendous.

  • Incredible center and intonation .The tone is so full and meaty.Amazing technique .

  • Straordianrio, semplicemente il migliore...

  • well smoothben11, you could buy a decent recording on i-Tunes if you are still curious of the sound.

In my opinion, Joe has the best sound I've ever heard.

  • he's amazing, but the Bb isnt all that hard.......and it was outta tune for a sec lol not wanting to sound arrogant just saying

  • dont want to be the bad guy and dont want to say some thing rong but dont u feel that the sound is not just... idk if u guys understand but maby i have a crapy headphone lol i like the tb so much and yes i do play since 2005

  • I'm a t-bone player and this guy is new to me. Wow. He floats effortlessly b/t high register and petal tones effortlessly.

He makes it look easy. Everyone in the industy knows it took years to accomplish this extraordianry performance. Bravo! Not to sound negative, but he looks like a mature musician, which of coourse, is good! That makes him shine all the more! European composition and genius is superior to anywhere in the world.

  • Well... not to be mean, but... if you're a trombone player and Joseph Alessi is new to you, then you must be a new Trombone player. Alessi is a god among god-like trombone players... even Lindbergh can't match Alessi's tone quality

  • i want that trombone so bad

  • Hahahaha, I'm LOVING the Pedal Bb at the end. That's playing with some cojones.

  • Alessi is the best trobone player classic ever.Thank you Joseph Alessi.

  • talk about a solid Bb at the end...

  • lol ive herd hes a bit mean in his lessons but hes really not, alessi. Hes just a forward guy.

  • Dudes, quit comparing Lindberg to Alessi. It's not about whose better but on which style you prefer cause they're just about even. They just have different ways of playing. I prefer Lindberg hands down, but that's just me. If you prefer Alessi, that's great, just don't critisize Linberg cause most don't even get close to their level anyway.

  • I agree with you a hundred percent. People need to stop comparing the players and just learn to appreciate their musicianship and technique. Its all just opinion anyway.

  • I love when hacks comment on great players, and they've never sat in an orchestra, or recorded a major CD, or put themselves out there in any way. Take a lesson with Joe and THEN tell me if you think he's great or not. It will change your life.

  • wow... im gonna go slit my wrists now...

  • sometimes hi plays like a robot , listen to wyncliffe

  • That's what Mr. Alessi is paid to play like. Mr. Gordon on the other hand has more room to improvise due to the idiom he is playing.

  • He plays like a robot at time because its suppost to be technical parts of the song. Its what my teacher calls the jock part of the trombone. Watch him in Blue Bells Of Scotland, you'll be blown away.

  • How did you download it from veotag player?

  • why do the tags say christian lindberg and jazz O_O

  • Stop talking shit and learn how to play trombone!!!!

  • hoogestefan, your a retard his tone is superb. Practically every above average trombone player aims to get this sound. and that becquet dude, in my opinion, has no musical sense

  • Maybe I am a retard like you say...I think I ain't though. His tone is much too rough. It's big and all, but it has that sharp edge to it, which I don't like at all. You may not agree with me, but what would the world be without differing opinions.

  • you really have to listen to some of his recordings because the sound quality of youtube is ruining his sound but he has such a big sound is not even funny, listen to another recording and then tell me if its still rough and edgy

  • Yep it always is. I've heard him live quite often...But seriously, don't get me wrong. Alessi is a great player, It's just that I don't think he's as great as Lindberg and Becquet. Still he's in my top 10. Just not in the top 3.

  • you think alessi is too bright and you prefer lindberg? sounds contradictory to me

  • Okay, okay...

He is a great player, still I can't bring myself to like his tone...

Though that is a matter of personal opinion, I prefer tone over technical ability. (Though it is important to have technical ability ;) )

  • alessi is a pretty phenominal player... very technically adept, very musical... very everything... he and lindberg are my favorite

  • Ever heard Michel Becquet? If not you should. That guy really blows Alessi and Lindberg away.

  • Nobody blows Alessi and Lindberg away. Nobody.

  • Have you ever heard Jim Markey?

  • his musicality and technical ability are through the roof, so this video is no less than I've come to expect from Joseph Alessi...absolutely a phenomenal player.

  • i would really like to know what trombone he uses...

  • he plays an Edward t350

  • Oh thx alot...

  • You know what kinda mouthpeice?

  • Greg Black Alessi 1

  • Greg Black Alessi 1 with medium weight... those suckers are expensive.

  • Suckers ? Suckers ?

Hey, I been playing wrong. I been blowing...
