well, for all those who don't understand the italian expression "Presto con fuoco", check google translator. to all those who think Martha's on fire, then you know what to do with the thumbs.
Pfffff ... Any high class player can play that even fast like this. But this is bloodless, tells no story, just rushing over the keyboard. That's it, Martha. Goddess down.
I'm no expert , but someone who is , said some of the old original notations had not many notations/ instructions on them by the composer on exactly how to play certain sections , that is how we have many different interpretations. U may know this already, :) She is a marvel , and am sorry I never knew about her when I was young , I love the Net , stay Free and beautiful . 2012
Just checked it, Richters clocks in at 1:34 and Argerich does it in 1:38 give or take a second on both. which means he plays is about 5% faster or that she plays it about 95% as fast as he does. We that's ok, we'll give the speed to Richter on this one. Hers sounds more a bit more legato to me, his has a different flavor. They're both awe inspiring in terms of their technique. Argerich is my favorite in so many other ways, They both deserve major accolades for this level of accomplishment
What's that? Cunts on youtube comments? What kind? Jealous cunts? Gosh.
I've never noticed such obvious sexism before. On the Richter video, he plays it faster but none of the comments are talking obvious bullshit about it being too fast and having no feeling. Give your opinion but why try to be hostile at the same time? I could say that I like Richter's performance more. I could say "HOLY FUCKING NUNBALLS!!! IF WE COULD HEAR SMELLS THIS IS WHAT A DRUNK DOG FART WOULD SOUND LIKE!". Grow up.
This is an etude. A study. A piece written to address a specific technical difficulty in order to improve your skill at it. Yes, Chopin's etudes are still quite musical, but at their core they are pieces designed to improve technique. Taken this way, an etude can never be too fast or too slow, as it's based on the playing ability of the pianist.
(excuse my very bad english, i'm french ^^) I think it's just technique and showing off... just go faster than others. Perhaps the energy is not too bad, but for me, it's very distant from chopin's mind ! just listen Horowitz or Cortot, even Richter is really good because it's musical!
@Plumedore Je voudrais bien savoir en quoi la version de Richter jouée aussi vite qu'il le peut est plus musicale que celle-ci ! Argerich en a "encore sous les doigts" pour nuancer ce qui est loin d'être le cas pour Richter.
I do, anyway, and I hope I always will. I try not to imitate myself.
It's dangerous if you're too pleased with what you've done, or if you get into a routine, because you start to imitate yourself. I like to go out on a limb sometimes, so it doesn't happen to me."
This is just way too fast. It becomes a "freak show" instead of a musical experience. You can just hear how she's pushing & pushing & pushing the tempo. It comes at the expense of all musicality... (I say this, even though I love Martha...)
@trschaefer Well...Chopin himself marked it at 88bpm to every half note...this seems to just a hair over that...so it's not really "too fast," it just lacks musicality. :)
@trschaefer Well, Chopin said: „I want to steal Liszt his energy and the style he plays my own etudes.“ But I know it doesn't mean he didn't play it musically :-) But I think, that as this should have been pieces for Chopin himself to technically practice before playing the concertos, it doesn't have to be really expressive, that's the thing left for the concertos… But on the other hand, except of the firs two, they are called „concert etudes“, so I expect some passion... I don't know :-D
@trschaefer That's entire bullcrap. Op 10 No 4 is meant to be played this fast! Take note of many famous pianist saying it themselves, such as Valentina Lisita. This is wonderfully played, I like the sound of it being pushed.
NOT faster than Richter - no way. But perhaps the notes are also a little less of a blur. Richter's hands are so fast that sometimes the music gets a little lost in them
why would anyone care about speed? An interpretation either deilvers or not, regardless of speed. That being said, this is properly played, it delivers!
this isn't a race!!!! this is music... someone cna prefer this performance... someone can love other interpretation like Richter; Horowitz ,Pollini etc etc... i like this performance but in my opinion Sviatoslav is incredible...
Martha Argerich spent a year of her life, smack dab in the middle of her piano career, retired, watching television 10 hours a day. She said she was depressed. 0_0
Maravillosa Martha, esta obra es fantásitca y muy difícil de ejecutar; la posición de los dedos es muy peculiar; la melodía pasa constantemente de una mano a otra.
it doesnt make me fell anything but her technique...i prefer Horowitz :(

So many people don't feel anything so say there's nothing to feel. I like it played just like this. Too fast ? Maybe your brain is too slow.

@trschaefer do you know, who was a favourite Chopins interpret of this piece? Liszt :-) And I guess he didn't play it really slowly... :-)

@davidmirth Hopefully Liszt played it with appropriate speed, and more musicality.

I prefer Horowitz's. There's some special and undeniably appealing and unique about Martha, but Horowitz is out of this world.
