One thing about this though, is you do need room to get your foot under. Notice how the guy lifts his foot a little so the leg can get under? It's best to keep one hand up and defend the choke with your chin tucked, buying time, and reaching down with the other hand to pull the opponets foot into correct position, otherwise, if strikes are coming, and you keep missing the foot hook, you're going to take a lot of damage.
I learned this move from a regular jiu jitsu gey. Whe where rolling, and I was a lot heavier a stronger, and somehow I got his back. Then I went for the body triangle and he almost broke my foot.
This counter works very well. I know this because i have been caught out with it before, proceeded to learn the move myself, and have no tapped sparring partners with it. Very strong technique.
This counter WORKS. I was sparring with a much smaller guy and got him in a body triangle (which I love because I have long legs), and he did this move. Almost broke my ankle. I had no idea what happened. It's awesome, because most guys don't know about it, so they don't see it coming--they're concentrating on choking you out and forget about their legs.
Another great move is when the guy gets your back and crosses his ankles in front of you (a closed guard from the back). Look that one up...
sir if you dont mind me asking.. im a grappler too.. and i just want to ask if that is under "leg locks".. i mean because in the tournaments here it is illegal to use leg locks in a tournament
Why couldn't the guy applying the body triangle just position his left leg diagonally across his shin and have it rest in the crotch region of his opponent?
I use this technique often, and even if you can't lock the leg the other person usually lets go of the body triangle because of the pressure they feel on the ankle when you turn to that side.
The only thing I would say, is if you do this wrong, it puts a lot more pressure on yourself. Im a long legged guy and love to put the body triangle on while having their back or even as part of my guard. Ive had a guy try this on me and it made him tap because he locked in a lot of pressure on himself without me having to use energy squeezing him. I would say to kind of struggle around and tire out his legs so he doesn't have it locked in so deep then go for it, not while his legs are fresh.
for all the haters this worked on me while rolling. i was all like "i have him in a body triangle. the world is mine!!!" and then he tapped me with this lol
@beargrylls3 wow dude i use the body triangle all the time n i never been caught n this.i keep my leg on the inside as a hook but i still have the triangle
@jas108 yeah. well i still mostly suck lol and yeah i guess if you kept that leg as a hook and didn't let him push that leg to the outside of your hip he couldn't do it. good idea. i still think it's a good option
@jas108 when the foot is inside, the same technique can be applied... trap the foot, hips up, tap.
i suck at trad hooks, so i use body triangle all the time. imo ur better off keeping the foot OUTSIDE, hooking into his knee. This prevents him from locking up your legs.
if at anytime you are at risk of ending up as the the vid describes, unravel ur legs, and immediately change to hooks or body triangle on the otherside.
if you get good at this, every1 will have a VERY hard time escaping.
@pptine yea i know it can b used when the hook is inside aswell, but i dnt keep my foot just there between both his legs.i like to keep my foot on the lower thigh n knee area and if he turns i just adjust my foot placement.trust me it works.i do it all the time and i've never been tapped by this technique.i suck at trad hooks too
I knew a Krav Maga escape in which you protect your neck with one hand and with the other you grab your opponents foot, then place your elbow in his knee, then you pull up his foot with your hand while your elbow does a lever effect on his knee, this puts a lot of pressure on his knee and hips and makes your opponent turn over himself thus opening his leg lock... it is kinda riskyer than this one cause you can get reversed and backmounted, but it is really easy to do
if you cant do the stepover method - get your leg behind his leg closest to the floor . and bump his ankle / calf with your knee/ quad and spin into him hard . often you can make them tap just by raising your hips up toward the ceiling (as fast as u can to shock them ) with no step over . / if your applying the triangle try to tuck your ankle close to his butt as possible and remember this is a costricting move , your calf is on his guts squeeze him in short hard bursts. take his air away :)
okay ive had a friend do this to me but he also had me in choke hold and was just pulling up on my neck n shoulders and down on my hips. if i had known to protect my neck i probally would of gotten out but alas. i tapped.
thank u so much my friend came up behind me and did this i broke out of it the first time but once he got his legs locked i couldnt break out and now imma practice this move! all he does is this so i pretty much got him haha
if for some reason you cant get your leg over his leg yet , bump his leg with your knee and spin hard into him . i have done and taught both of these and the knee bump method is a good emergency alternative
Cool. I was just trying to find a video on how to break a body triangle open, but finishing a fight from there is a more than acceptable alternative. Thanks for the video!
Very good. A submission move that he doesn't even realise you're attempting either. All the time you're suspecting, you can be doing things to avoid getting submitted... in a 2 step move like that, that could possibly executed in seconds... is lethal.
Mr Ultimate TKO. I'm gonna guess you havent done any Grappling & ended up in a body Triangle. There is no way to turn over period in a body Triangle. Even Ceaser Gracie said it in the video if you listen carefully.
There is a way, look up all of the triangle choke escapes and you will see it. And yes I'll admit, I haven't done any grappling whatsoever, but I will start soon.
this works when the attacker can barely lock the triangle...if the guy has really long legs, the triangle is knotted over the shin and this doesn't put enough pressure on the ankle. This technique will just increase the pressure on your back and kidneys. Any ideas for this situation?
This is a relatively new control of the body from behind. I've noticed this a lot in mma of recent years but not something I was taught or saw when I trained years ago. I was wondering how to escape. This is a great vid, thanks. Ignore all the negative, what if questions. Some people will challenge others rather than challenge their own ignorance.
what if the attaacker completly wraps is legs round and doesnt expose one of his feet??.. i guess ur pretty much fucked by then.... but thats what u deserve for getting grappled from the back
If he wraps his legs around you then you can set up another counter by crossing his feet and setting up almost a similar move. If he dosent completely close his legs around you then you can escape anyway. There are other options...
He will be focused on the rear naked choke. While your setting him up for the tap out. If he gets the choke then yeah your screwed at that moment. Until then you still have a fighting chance with techniques like this one.
of course there are .. life are filled with different possibilities... there is no set course for anything. if you have ever been in a fight its all about reacting to the situation not setting out a fight rutine
any scissoring of the legs around the waist of an opponent with the intent to apply pressure is typically a penalty. in a regular match you don't have the time nor the need to body triangle. in regular old sparring, it's fine.
@minutedude It is legal, as long you not try to get a tap by squezzing. But just like taking the back and putting hooks, if there is not progression the referee will stop the contest. So it is better to put more effort in choking the shit out opponet quickly. And with only the hooks you also have the option to use the legs to trap a deffending arm or to swing your hips to a armlock. I know this rules sucks, and encourage people to not care about giving their backs and not learning newaza.
the reality is when someon has your back and a body triangle aswell your pretty much fucked so any option that you may have I suggest you use...there is no sweep, no choke no gaurd technique that works 100 percent of the time everyone who trains bjj knows that ... so that fact that he gives you an option why not try it if it works great if it doesn't you were fucked to start of with anyhow lol..thanx for the technique I know I will try it
Lightning would strike your opponent before you were able to hook an experienced fighter with this one. I must admit it look cool. However, the guy gives him the foot at the end of the video.
guyz who use the body triangle know the defense also, the trick is to defend before he locks. this teq. is less effect with a longer legged person and thats who is the best at this. Reason being his legs are long and when you arch he just rides it out by sliding his leg in deeper. I have yet to find a fail safe defense. Sheet works if your tuff, but it is hell on your cardio
i use the body triangle all the time because i have long legs and i can do it without grabbing them and securing it but i have never tech used onme but couldnt you just pull your foot out or defend it long enough to get the rear naked choke?
This is a very effective move. I discovered it a few months ago when one of our guys started using the body triangle. He was so pissed to have to tap from that position.

good counter, but will only work if the guy is dumb enough to let you put the triangle on the bottom. anyone that uses this backmount a lot will know to switch it to the top when their opponent rotates.
