@hellomellop Diesel's just have a stigma as being loud and dirty but that is changing.....most trucks (snow plowing) use diesel's, but not alot cars here (i live in canada) are Diesel.....VW Jetta is very popular.... i think and hope more clean diesel's will come to north america......one other aspect of Diesel's that cause problems here in Canada, is that they are hard to start in the winter....they gel up, and u almost always need to plug them in... just thought i'd let u know that.....

Funny how for the Yanks they have said it does less MPG than it does in Europe. Only because the yanks believe if it is fuel efficient then it is rubbish.

I think the reason the mileage is lower for the "yanks" is because our emissions standards are stricter. They have to be set up differently to meet these but then the mileage suffers. In typical yank fashion though, I don't give a flying fuck about the environment but I do about my wallet. Given the choice, I would prefer the mpg that you guys get over the cleanliness.

but what they should do is give it a series hybrid drivetrain so it could accelerate very fast yet have better mileage than any other non series hybrid car. far better than a prius and could well have a 0-100km/h of 5seconds. that's what electric offers. VW is just being evil assholes and fighting the inevitable

A series configuration adds a lot of weight, which isn't really the best idea for a roadster. I do agree that the current European trend of slapping a diesel in a car for high mileage and calling it good enough will only last until the price of a series comes down. A polo may beat out a prius but it will never be anywhere near a similar series hybrid.

@CorvetteRacingFan not really. it replaces the transmission, starter motor, alternator and starter battery. and it doesn't cost substantially more. if you add some batteries you can even take away weight from the combustion engine.

it is the easy obvious superior solution. car makers are just fighting against the obvious.

I think that is a fair point but you will gain a bit from the new architecture. I have a friend on here that helped build a series hybrid, who I may ask about this. For now, I found about 3500lb for the Chevy Volt compared to 3300 for the Malibu.

@CorvetteRacingFan the Volt is overengineered. they didn't get it right in the first go. they have double size battery pack and a full size combustion engine designed to drive a car directly. you'll see 2 cylinder generators purpose built
