Hes def. blind. The first fight scene he steps back into a dark tunnel with sunglasses on and after fighting he has to ask the girl by the cart where the water is and then smells it making sure its water. He also tries to use his Ipod when it obviously is showing that the batts are dead. The brail bible and the close up on his eyes should have given that away....

Re-watch, there is alot of close ups on there hands. Mila's character even says it. Plus they are very suspicious anywho. lol

Once the shop owner realizes his hands aren't shaking, he puts the gun down. This is the scene where Eli request to have his battery that he uses for his iPod to be powered up. He makes a trade with the shop keeper in exchange for this service.

@zmjgotgame He is blind throught the whole movie .He never makes eye contact with anyone,that why he backed into that tunnel with the first hijackers to give him the advantage and watch near the end of the movie they do a close up on his eyes and thier pale.Thats what made the movie more interesting that he was being guided by a higher power.

He doesn't see the sign, when he is walking up the steps he kicks the first one rather than move his foot fully over it, when he goes towards the door he holds the shotgun out so he doesn't run into it. Also when they go outside to see the graves, everyone is wearing sunglasses, like everyone almost always is outside because it's so bright, but Eli isn't wearing any. None of this proves it but its just subtle hints.
@newwy95 there are small clues all over the movie that indicate he is blind, he was blinded by the sun when the first world ended. They show his eyes at the end of the movie when he is telling the old man what to write on the paper, you can see the glaze over his eyes. When you watch the movie again pay close attention youll catch it

The couple here generally act civil given the circumstances, but they are behind guise able to kill and eat another human for the sake of survival. Would I be able to do that? @Ragitsu - takes time to spread, and clinicians and veterinarians (since most biological attacks would be germs lifted from animals) would probably alert everyone within the space of 36 hours, thus while a lot of people can be exposed, only those with compromised immune systems would fall sick soon. It would give enough time for countermeasures to be put in place and contain the biological attack.

Near the end of the movie when Carnegie finally manages to capture the book (which is actually the Bible), he discovers that it is written in Braille.
That's definitely one main clue that Eli (Denzel Washington) is literally blind.
