  • Nice review.

Sadly, I must agree with you there. It's still an enjoyable experience for me, as a NWN fan. Well, sort of. But it's kind of a let-down after the original campaign. The story is quite shallow and goes really fast. And the enemies seem to be shallow as well. And the terribly long dialogues! There are a few things I like, though. The winter setting. Deeper impact of your actions. Puzzles. Stronger interaction with your henchmen. I really like Dorna. As you said, she's really amusing.

  • Are you going to make a CoH review?

  • Which CoH? City of Heroes or Company of Heroes?

  • @DWTerminator Company of Heroes.

  • Yep. I'll be reviewing it and both expansions eventually. Not sure when though.

  • @DWTerminator Cool.

  • I really enjoyed the lowkey beginning, how you're just some scrubby nobody doing odd things around this small village, getting killed by Kobolds, but yeah, after that wore off the game was pretty uninteresting and ended too soon. If you pair it with HotU (since those sort of run together) you could say it's a nice first part to more epic adventures. I always thought of HotU and SoU as being the type of game that NWN should have been to start, but that's because I never enjoyed NWN much to start.

  • I loved the first chapter, when you have to round up the artifacts and such, but as soon as you get to the Desert the game just drops in quality and intrest.

  • Story and gameplay just descend into mediocrity with SoU, sadly. Truly lackluster expansion pack that *could* have been so much more.

  • @DWTerminator I agree except I liked the story, the only problem was that it slowed down way too much in the middle, but picked up again at the end.

  • I just felt like the story for SoU was pretty wimpy compared to HotU and the OC. I'll admit I lost interest shortly after it began, since it just takes it forever to really get "in the groove."

  • @DWTerminator I totally agree, and I can say that if you aren't a D&D fan or a NWN fan, you'd probably hate SoU.

  • That's pretty much the case... It's kinda sad actually... I *am* a D&D and NWN fan... but SoU is just a lackluster expansion.

  • Shadows of the Undrentide is good for a couple of reasons. If you are a roleplayer you want to see how your character got to 15 levels and how he started. Plus the final battle with Heurodis is epic

  • I really thought this expansion was mediocre.....Hordes blows this out of the water.

  • It was, but if you get it packaged with the game then it's not so bad.

  • What build were you using? I just beat Mask of the Betrayer, and am about to play this. Would a bard work nicely? I've always wanted to try one.

  • I really care little about my builds. As long as I can complete the game it's usually ok.

Bards are relatively difficult to play as though, since they're mostly a support character. You'd probably need to have a fighter in your party to balance combat out.

  • I really care more about role-playing tbh.

But what character did you us?

  • Fighter/Weapon Master and Paladin classes mostly.

  • Dual wielding katana fighter/weapons master == PWNAGE!!!

  • Depends on your feats and stats.

  • 3 Dual wielding feats + power attack + great cleave + WM feats + weapon specialisation = /\_/\

  • that works, but devastating critical means 1 hit kills. ^_^

  • Yeah but you need epic levels to do that. My Katana character was only 15 at the end of the Adam Miller series.

  • Yeah, well, Hordes of the Underdark = epicness.

  • Yes, in the most literal sense.

  • MrVersi, you may wanna take 9 Ranger levels to back up your Bard. Not only do you get a hefty boost to HP's, you'll also get better Fort saves and Dual Wield feats for free.. not to mention animal companion (Spider + Web is fun for the whole family!). Bards are pretty good one you get used to their versatility.

Another build I like is Fighter/Bard/Arcane Archer. Wpn Spez. in Longbows + buffs + loads of damage to your arrows. One of my favourite Epic builds ^_^

  • I don't like 3e rangers so much for RP reasons, but yes, the dual-wield feats rule. I'm tilting towards a ranger.

  • @MrVersipellis It's ironic how they are called "Rangers" even though you get no archery feats and instead you get dual wielding. A dex based fighter is a much better ranger or archer.

  • @Tiars666tiamat Yeah, I'd have to agree. However, 2e rangers are one of the best classes

  • @MrVersipellis What I REALLY miss from 2E is the Kensai. Unarmored Weapon Master. Making a Katana Weapon Master in 3E with full plate is really lame and the closest is probably Iaijutsu Master / Weapon Master I think

  • @Tiars666tiamat Still, I've tried that katana master build in neverwinter nights and it kicks ass. Only trouble is that katanas don't have the best crit.

  • @MrVersipellis In NwN1 you can't use the Katana with both hands. And using two katanas you get -4 on both hands. I could barely hit them in HotU unfortunately. I think the new Kensai in 3E is the Scythe Master. Or Iaijutsu Master if you use custom classes. Iaijutsu Focus for great damage, Dex Katana and Int based AC

  • @Tiars666tiamat But not if you get the right build. With the proper feats at a high level in NWN1 dual katanas are amazing, if not the best

  • Will hordes of the underdark expansion work with neverwinter nights 2?

  • Er... no. Hordes of the Underdark is a Neverwinter Nights 1 expansion.

NWN2 has its own set of expansions.

  • No.

  • I played through SoU recently, and I'm really curious why they called the middle chapter "interlude" instead of just making it chapter two. I mean, when I saw that it was called interlude, I figured it'd be a really short diversion between the first major chapter and the next, but it was REALLY LONG. Possibly longer than the other chapters. It was three major dungeon crawls in a row held together with a ton of dialog.

  • Not really sure why it's called "Interlude." That's a question you'd have to ask Bioware to get a good answer I guess.

  • hehe now i want to play nwn again! And personnally i liked SoU better than the OC, because the npc's have more depth and whats not to like about flying cities :D

  • Really I think the only character who gets a lot of development in SoU is Deekin, but to each their own. I liked the campaign fine, it was just the minimal new content that made me not like SoU that much overall.

  • I preferred the OC. I based the 2/5 rating on the fact that it really didn't add much new content that anyone took advantage of, nor did it add a very interesting campaign for me. Deekin's about the only part of it that's really fun.

  • Deekin straight rules, Red mages of Thay...epic.

  • So true.

  • Deekin was the only appeal this campaign had.

  • It was ok, but Deekin's definitely the best character in there. I got it in the Gold Edition though so I'm not complaining too much.

  • Yeah that's da one i got :P

  • Platinum here =p

    nice vid btw

  • agreed.

  • Thanks. I ended up getting Gold then Hordes. I'll probably do the same thing with NWN2 when I get it (Gold then Storm of Zehir).

  • Correction. There are TWO things that's good about SoU: prestige classes and Deekin.

    "Doom, doom, doooom!"

  • Ah yes, I forgot Deekin. That little guy was epic.

  • In the German version Deekin's song is "dumm dumm dumm" which translates "stupid stupid stupid". I guess Valen hates the German song even harder.

  • That's amusing ^_^

  • As much as i love nwn2, every time I see videos for nwn1 i want to go back and play it. I have the complete Forgotten realms box set that has all the d&d games from baldur's gate to temple of elemental evil, and all expansions(box with bg type disk folder and 18 dics!, got it for $40 at gogamer, imported from uk). But i never do as i still haven't beat nwn2 and all my other games. When nwn1 came out i got to chapter 3 and quit for morrowind. Never got the expansions..maybe someday i will try it

  • Now THAT's a boxed set. The only D&D games I've got are NWN + the two main expansions and Icewind Dale 2. Of course, I've also got an actual D&D set, but I never get a chance to use it since nobody I know is interested in it.

  • you should be fine with a 8600. What is your cpu, and ram? I had a geforce 6800gt when nwn2 came out and i played that and oblivion (granted not over 20fps but still for card from 2004 not bad, as it had shader 3.0) then i got a 7900gs and it ran nwn2 flawlessly. Now I have a 8800gts-640 that runs nwn2 with texture, and shader tweaks at 1920x1200 with 4xaa, 16xaf all max settings, and fluid fps.

  • I'm going by what I saw on the NWN forums: that NWN2 has problems with the 8600 series for some unknown reason. It does fine with other cards though.

  • geforce 8600 sucks ati is much better i liked the expansion pack but nwn 2 best by far!

  • Neverwinter Nights is a great game but i only like the first chapter in this game. And you reviews are good to and everyone who has Neverwinter Nights should get NN2 to.

  • Thanks. NWN 2 is for people whose systems can handle it. It's a pretty demanding game, and has some issues with certain graphics card models (the GeForce 8600 comes to mind). SoU has a pretty crappy campaign, unlike NWN and HotU.
