@AxleKlown I forget but I was using a gallon jar and I think I was supposed to put a pound of sugar in and I dumped in a five gallon bag so my were syrupy sweet. Let us know how they turn out!
i live in minnesota now but i was born and raised in mississippi and thats where i first tried kool-aid pickles, there was this man who use to make them when i was a kid and i absolutely love them, you let them set and really let the kool-aid soak all the way through, then put them in the fridge and let them get cold before eating and they taste absolutely fantastic, i thought about it the other day now i'm trying to make my own, just put'em together yesterday and so the wait begins, lol
I never thought of Kool Aid with brine Kosher Dills... that part would be OK, but with all that sugar I'd need a tanker truck full of insuline. Be well, Jim...
I haven't made mine yet. I'm doing the kick-off party for "Frugal Friday" on the 26th and will post on the following friday. I've mentioned it to a couple of my frugal friends, but they don't seem too excited... oh well, I think it's going to be great.
Beth I think you can cut it down to 2 or 3 days if you use the spears. Be careful though. Richochet and I both screwed up and poured the whole four pounds of sugar in instead of the one pound it called for. LOL
Yes Richochet and I screwed up and used the whole bag but you are supposed to use just 1 pound. LOL Leave it to the men to screw up the recipe. LOL -Jim
I am going to be right by the Mount Olive Pickle plant this week so I am going to stop in there little store and buy me a big ole jar of pickles and make me some of these. I think there going to be good!
Alley please go up there and film it while you are buying the ingredients to make some koolickles. LOL I'm counting on you to make a batch and try them out on the locals. LOL -Jim
Think I'll give this a try, but use splenda instead of the sugar...should work...I've made other pickles with it. Let ya know how it turns out!! Thanks, Grams
My grandmother used to make something similar. Never knew what she put in them, but it might've been Kool-Aide. They were soo good. I think I may try this one Jim!! :)
Trish this is interesting. I've never heard of or tried gherkin but Wikipedia says it's in the same species family as the cucumber, which we Americans use to make pickles. So, I suppose they are very similar.
I have just been to my supermarket and i specifically looked for pickles and all there was was some pickled gherkins, and such a tiny jar of them, nothing like your huge jar. I guess the British don't eat them much but i'd like to try them, in fact i'd like to try all sorts of food you eat over there
Hey Robert. I'm thinking you will have the perfect koolickle video response. LOL You are so creative and I'm thinking you will start a whole koolickle revolution! LOL -Jim

Jamie that's great! Make sure to make a video and post it as a video response here. Three people have already done that and their videos are great. Thanks for watching! I can't wait to see your koolickles. -Jim
Have you tried Fried Dill Pickles. They are made out of Dill picle slices and fried just like the green tomatoes. Yum Yum, I'm not to sure bout the koolickles.
Hey Sue. Yeah, I've had the fried pickle slices and like them. Someone mentioned fried jalapeno slices so I want to try them next. Good to see you. -Jim
Mama made sweet dills like that, but not with the koolade. Mama also brought the juice to a boil. I think it sped up the process. Thanks Jim, but I'm doing the low carb thing and if I go for something sweet I ain't thinkin' pickles!
Hey Jay. May I've lost a ton on that diet in the past. At the current moment it's all back so I need to get back on it or something. LOL I can understand, you don't want to blow it on a sweet pickle. LOL Good to see you buddy. -Jim
I am going to second Amanda's comment (blubutterfly07) - I am will wait to see if you like them first! While you were explaining, I googled koolickles and up came a picture of a bright red pickle. I remember that episode of Alton Brown finding the kool-aid pickles in the deep south as he was starting off on his motorcycle adventure. Can't wait to see how they turn out! - roc
Now come on Roc. I was counting on you. LOL You're exactly right. He was on a motorcycle and I had forgotten that until you mentioned it. They'll be ready in a week and we'll given them a try. Hope you are having a great weekend! -Jim
I just posed a comment over on your video about the subject. Was it a knee replacement? My 80 year old step-mother had one of those last year and is now on her knees doing yard work. LOL Anyway, wanted you to know that brighter days are ahead. -Jim
Hey Richochet. Yeah, you can use spears but they might be sweeter. I think the bigger ones will end up sweet on the outside and sour in the middle. But, I haven't tried them yet. LOL -Jim
I don't even want to go to the store today.. between hurricane and school supply shopping, the stores are going to be a zoo!! The shelves in many local markets (from what I'm hearing) are already empty! ughh!! But if I'm a lucky girl, I'll find that quart of pickles and packet of koolaide (yeah, I'm cutting down your recipe).
BTW, good morning! I stayed up WAY too late last nigh! *yawn*
Don't worry Angie. They'll all be in the milk and bread isles and not in the pickle and kool-aid isles. LOL Strap yourself down and hold on. You'll be able to survive on koolickles if the power goes out! -Jim
Oh that's great to find someone that has actually made them before. I'm wondering now if they might be better if you didn't slice them in half so they would be more sour in the middle. Thanks for watching. -Jim
Hey everybody GO WATCH the attached video reply by davidzackholmes who is David in Atlanta. He's taking up the challenge and his video takes us on a ride to and through the grocery store to get the ingredients. Great video so go watch, comment and subscribe. -Jim
Hey Angel. I don't like sweet pickles either but I think these are supposed to end up sweet on the outside and sour in the middle. So, it's an interesting combination. I'll let you know in a week. LOL -Jim
I'll wait till you let me know and probably take your word for it lol.I don't know i'm not a risky person when it comes to food.I dunno though I do like pickled beats.Who knows I may give it a try if you say they are good. But if you lead me wrong on this i'll never trust you again lmao.J/k
Hey Daryl. What kind of pickles do you make. When I was a kid back in Alabama, we used to make bread and butter pickles which were way to sweet for my taste. But most folks loved em. Thanks for watching! -Jim

Hey Ruthe. Strawberry would be good. You could use any flavor I think. Let us know how they come out. LOL We'll start a giant wave of koolickle eating tubers! LOL -Jim
ohhhhh, well thanks for clearing that up. lol Jim so ironic you do this recipe vlog because the other day I was searching for Nathan's dill pickles from NYC) online and I ran across those koolaid pickles and the NY times article on it! not a huge pickle person; I do like them. Have you ever had them fried? I haven't but GrannyMae was talking about them fried and how good they are.
Hey Susan. Oh I'm glad you saw the article. Yeah, I've had fried pickle slices and they were pretty good. I want to try fried jalapeno slices next. Thanks for watching! -Jim
Aw, comeon Martha, you and OweMe need to have a little adventure in your life!! give it a try!! BTW, I'm only going to buy a quart of pickles.. use 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/2 a packet of koolaide.. just in case I hate it, I won't have a gallon of it left over!!!
You're playing with Glenna too Billy.. keep the women folk straight young man!! But you are right, we're off balance.. me thinks Jim needs to join our lil' online games.. the more the merrier!!
Oh my! I read the description and got confused when I got to the Jewish Dill but I won't ask how you differentiate them! Then it got kind of worse - I think I will pass on this recipe sorry!
Ha ha! Well I just tried to find the equivalent of Kool-Aid in the UK and the only thing I can find that's close is First-Aid which might be the sequel!
Ok, but I have an idea...Walmart has a brand of Crystal Lite sugar free drink (picture pre-sweetened no-sugar Cherry Kool-aid). Well, I think I might try to make it with that instead of the full sugar stuff. If it doesn't work, I'll try it the other way. Jonny is a HUGE pickle freak. So, I'm betting that he'll love this.
Sandi that's a great idea. A pound of sugar is pretty crazy I'll admit. I was thinking you could use splenda instead. If you make them, make sure you post it as a video reply so that we can all see it. Thanks for watching. -Jim
Blondbabe they are simple to make and I know you'll be at the grocery store. So, grab a jar of pickles, some Kool-Aid, and sugar and whip them up. The kids will think you are cool! LOL -Jim
Billy at .19 cents a pack, we can afford to waste just a little bit of Kool-Aid. LOL I'm counting on a goo Southern boy like you to mix up a batch of these Delta Treats. LOL -JIm
I'm thinking fried! By the way, a subscriber has turned me on to fried jalapeno rings. Yum. ...I've also had fried dill pickle slices. ...is that why I am always on a diet? Can't someone please invent a fried foods diet? Billy and I would pay big bucks!
Oh whatever Billy! Now get back to the game before I take your turn away from you!! By the way.. I can play the game and type in complete sentences!! Impressive huh?? lol
It sounds gross, but I'm game!! I have a lot of videos to make huh??? Starting with the sweetened condensed milk; followed then with the marmite video (since I won a jar of it); then this one.. ackk!! I'm thinkin I'm gonna have a tummy ache!! Heck, I should do all three in one video.. that should be good for a hurl or two! *smile*
Loved your video as always Jim!!
Feel good videos are much needed and exactly what the doctor ordered!!
Angie I promise you, Country's southern snacks will be good for you! My country treats are relaxing and good for the soul. LOL So, pucker up and bite down on Country's cherry pickle. LOL -Jim
Me, Billy and Glenna (HiddenFromView) are on a three way phone call while playing online Yatzy.. wanna join us or would you rather have a private pickle chat with me?.. *wink wink*
Sounds different for sure. I am allergic to dill so I can not make these. I am going to be watching to see what everyone else thinks of em. Thanks for sharing this kind of thing. Hope you have a great weekend. HUGS xoxo
Peggy it's interesting that you are allergic to dill. I'm allergic to almost everything on the planet but not dill. We'll, give them a try and let you know what they taste like. LOL Thanks for watching. -Jim
And I thought Pickles couldn't get any worse LOL I might just make these to torture my family with though. And what did you go and dump sugar on your self for..you know you can't get any sweeter Jim :)
Tori you are cracking me up! LOL I think it would be the perfect food for you to torture your family. LOL You'll have to let us know what they said. They might love em! LOL -Jim
Well alright then! Jim, in the name of adding even more luster to our already shining Southern cuisine's glory I accept the challenge. Now the trouble is going to be trying to get these koolickles made before I consume the entire jar of regular old dills. Dang but I love those things!
If these koolickles go good with grits we got ourselves a winner!
im using my own home made pickles for it
i hope it works as well as ones i had down south

ohhhhh, well thanks for clearing that up. lol Jim so ironic you do this recipe vlog because the other day I was searching for Nathan's dill pickles from NYC) online and I ran across those koolaid pickles and the NY times article on it! not a huge pickle person; I do like them.

-Jim

Sandi this is right up your alley! I know you can do this and you have the family to test them on! LOL ...it's perfect. -Jim
CountryComesToTown 3 years ago
Ok, but I have an idea...Walmart has a brand of Crystal Lite sugar free drink (picture pre-sweetened no-sugar Cherry Kool-aid). Well, I think I might try to make it with that instead of the full sugar stuff. If it doesn't work, I'll try it the other way. Jonny is a HUGE pickle freak. So, I'm betting that he'll love this.
:) TTYL Jim,
Sandi
IWalk4tnt 3 years ago
Sandi that's a great idea. A pound of sugar is pretty crazy I'll admit. I was thinking you could use splenda instead. If you make them, make sure you post it as a video reply so that we can all see it. Thanks for watching. -Jim

Blondbabe they are simple to make and I know you'll be at the grocery store. So, grab a jar of pickles, some Kool-Aid, and sugar and whip them up. The kids will think you are cool! LOL -Jim
CountryComesToTown 3 years ago
Billy at .19 cents a pack, we can afford to waste just a little bit of Kool-Aid. LOL I'm counting on a goo Southern boy like you to mix up a batch of these Delta Treats. LOL -JIm

Hey Judy. The Koolicles will be ready in a week I think. I'll do an online tasting. Maybe you should mix up a batch and give them a try. LOL -Jim
CountryComesToTown 3 years ago
Well alright then! Jim, in the name of adding even more luster to our already shining Southern cuisine's glory I accept the challenge. Now the trouble is going to be trying to get these koolickles made before I consume the entire jar of regular old dills. Dang but I love those things!
If these koolickles go good with grits we got ourselves a winner!

Dicom I've never tried them but can't wait! We'll know in a week my friend! LOL -Jim
