Ahhh!!! Even though I've seen this movie quite a few times. I still hesitate and get a bit nervous when it comes to this scene. I say to myself don't watch it, don't watch. I watched it!! SHIT!!!!
I feel bad because unlike most people in this movie this ghost died in a freak accident. He was probably with his friend and he was probably bored, decided "hey wanna see my dads neat gun?" they didnt know how to use it and he accidentily got himself shot. it happens all the time.
Dog: "Oh no! the 70s are back!" My favorite scene. So well done, and well, there's just something about the 70s, the autumn colors, an f'ed up war winding down, not to mention all the horror movies I saw as a kid, as well as the murder stories of that period, stand out the most. Seems a pretty dark & interesting decade to me. I suppose, at the least, my own nostalgia meets the hauntedness. Oh, I also love the fact that the stupid kid still wants to play with guns! I can't say I blame him.
This scene is, without doubt, the most blood-chilling moment in the movie (at least in my opinion). The randomness of the ghost kid (presumably a pre-teen who died sometime in the mid to late seventies) adds a further element of menace to an already dark film. The very moment the dog goes running from the room down the hall, a feeling of pure dread is felt. You don't even need to see the rest of the scene to know something very disturbing and unsettling is about to unfold before your eyes.
Also, the tone heard at the beginning of the 5 second mark (which immediately follows the dogs panicked departure from the bedroom) adds further dread to an already extremely unpleasant occurance. By seeing the dog fleeing and hearing the tone, the mind conjures up feelings of black despair even before seeing the ghost walk into the room. It makes me think of "The Shining" mere moments before Danny Torrence turns the final corner on his Big Wheels trike and encounters the Grady Twins.
This is my favorite scene too!

@123ppleperson I never thought of that! I always assumed it was his dad that shot him and i personally think his dad shooting him is even more scary.

Over 10 years later, this is the scene. So bitter, so sad, so useless, and this poor kid trapped in eternity for wanting to be cool.
M. Night was so good.

(Can't say I blame him for repeating history, because guns are cool, and he's missing some brain)
