@bamboo4tameshigiri If he haven't of shut the shield who knows what would fly out of there and hit someone. The stupid thing was that he used oxy-acetylene if oxygen and heat is combined to the acetylene it makes a bomb pretty much.
@carfenaticman123 Oh I dont know what would have fallen out, glass perhaps. Then again, the explosion might have been less severe if there was more room for the gasses to expand. At any rate, it's pretty scary having so many people there without eye protection facing glass shards.
I suspect that this teacher will never make the same mistake again.
Last summer, I had this summer job at a factory, and my superior asked me and some guys to get some acetylene for welding. Now, my superior said it was dangerous. We were to get five compressed gas cylinders of acetylene. Large Cylinders. Thing is, if the cylinder was in too much motion, it could explode. One of the five, could wreck the whole care into pieces. Glad my superior didn't mention that x) Still, how can a teacher use such chemicals and not knowing of how dangerous it is.
@opsimathics it wasn't an experiment; it was a demonstration. if the instructor's intent was to demonstrate the hazards of being absent minded in the lab then i agree; win.
any hydrocarbon gas when mixed with O2 will rock your world, but that triple carbon bond just has some much freaking energy to give! I normally use an 8 oz wax cup turned upside down with a pinhole in the bottom, much safer and still loud as hell. I've have a dream of someday filling a weather ballon with this mixture and setting it off out in the desert somewhere.
that happened to me today, but harder and more oxygen and it came through the littlebubbles of oxygen and Acetylene and I stood 1 food from the explosion and 30 yards from the explosion, they could still feel the shock wave.
now I'm fucking deaf piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
haha what a dumb ass, that must have been a 2 gallon bag and he set it off in a glass cabinet, i saw it coming from the start. its lucky no one got shrapnel.
acetylene experiment gone badly right. for a mixture of oxi-acetylene to do that much damage would be a perfect ratio. unfortunately you now have a deaf chem teacher.
dumbass...used oxygen in there too...I know what he was trying to do, I have done it myself several times...not very dangerous untill you throw the oxygen in there
Hope he got fired, everyone in there should have had safety glasses and hearing protection. Wouldn't be such a funny video if a kid popped up with a shard of glass in his eye or a burst ear drum
You don't need acetylene. If you use oxygen and propane, and get the mix right, you will get a huge bang. A balloon about the size of a grapefruit is the biggest you should try if you are within ten feet of it. If it goes "pop" instead of BANG you have too much propane and not enough oxygen. Use ear and eye protection. And protect the rest of your body just in case. A balloon the size of a basketball will do serious damage to ears and anything else in the way.
And everyone in the room will hear that ringing sound for the rest of the day. The word of the day is Shrapnel! Or would've been if that explosion had been any more powerful.
Never try to contain expanding gas you mean, in which case an explosion is what you will get. Unless of course what you were going for was an explosion, in which case contain away!

This guy is retarded, he should know that the triple bond in acetylene contains a shitload of energy. It doesn't need to be compressed to explode just the right stoichiometric ratio. I used to fill balloons up and set them off in my backyard until my neighbor called the cops with a shots fired report.
@mastergx1 the test chamber doesn't compress anything. In fact it's a ventilated chamber that enables you to work with chemicals without getting exposed to gasses etc.

Looks like there was a leak and the entire hood was filled with acetylene/oxygen if you look at the slo-mo, the flame ball fills the entire hood this might explain the size of the explosion

@Nguli34689 I'm sure this chemistry teacher shares your respect for explosives as well.
