Circus elephants are horribly mistreated in any circus. so are the other wild animals. even if they didnt train them abusively, which they do, the nature of a traveling circus, the long hours confined in a boxcar, hustled from noisy city to noisy city, running around to blaring music and lights for 15 minutes then shuffled back ont he boxcar and chained by the feet for another 18hr road trip....this is inherently abusive to an animal designed to walk up to 60 miles a day through rainforest.

Im probably going to get a thumbs down for this...but in today socioty, I would be a little surprised they STILL abuse the animals creully. I am all for peace with animals, but we have no chance to see the intersting activity the animal can do without the circus. And frankly, I would be upset if I was unable to see them. You obviously don't know anything about animals in the circus. Elephants are beaten with bullhooks and electrocuted in order for trainers to "train" them. When they are not performing, their legs are chained and they can't move. The animals are forced to perform ridiculous tricks that they are not meant to be doing, for the entertainment of humans. You are lacking facts in your statement, therefore it is appropriate for me to tell you that you are wrong.
This gives me such mixed emotions..I guess over all i can think is "awe poor things." atleast that is what they are treated like "things"..for the sake of entertainment. I would prefer to be entertained by these animals by observing them doing what they were made to do. Be elephants. Ringling has a great reputation for animal stewardship. There is a video going around that shows some abuse - but we can't judge the whole organization by the 3 men abusing it. The tricks that the elephants do are much more basic than they were years ago... I've been to Thailand and the elephants there do the same things in the wild - besides standing on their hind legs - but only one elephant does that, and he is from the other tour and is very small
i guess i shouldnt be too judgemental because I dont know all the facts about what happens when the elephants get off the stage but if you go to the tennese elephant sanctuary website you can read the elephants biographies and the ones that spent time in the circus have some sad stories so I dont completely agree that its just a rumour about elephant abuse in the circus
this is a very impressive show, however one should remember that once the lights go out these animals spend much of their lives in cramped conditions traveling around not knowing anything that is natural to them. Elephants are better watched in a more natural environment

this is a very impressive show, however one should remember that once the lights go out these animals spend much of their lives in cramped conditions traveling around not knowing anything that is natural to them. Elephants are better watched in a more natural environment
