  • wow its not a TANKER its a FRIEGHTER unless tankers carry coal I have sailed on this vessel........

  • (i live in duluth) and i am not sure if this is it but every once in a while we get a ship we call the thousand footer. It is actually 1000 feet long! Also that horn is deafening...!

  • should've had the Imperial March song playing as it was going by. lol

  • oooohhhh...... I see that every day outside my living room window.

  • If you stood this ship on end, it would be taller than the IDS tower in Mpls. Other lakers are longer than the McCathy at 1250+ ft and are as long as the Empire State Building is tall. So that gives one an idea. Also, at 1000 ft, that is about 3 1/2 football fields long.

  • It's not a tanker, it is a bulk carrier. It hauls coal to Detroit and other places down the lakes to generate electricity. I have a good friend that works on this ship. No fuel or oil is moved on the Great Lakes. They are all bulk carriers or general cargo. The ships that stay only within the Great Lakes are over 1000 ft long. Ocean going vessels are much shorter.

  • its always fun to watch them come through

  • Imperial Star Destroyer, anyone?

  • Ahh the good ol' Walter J. McCarthy Jr.

  • Wow! I was in Duluth today and saw this exact same video live! It was the same ship and everything! I got a ton of pictures. The stats on this vessel were mind-blowing!

  • you should see it when the ships that carry wind turbine parts come through. their huge! they barely pass under the bridge and commonly scrape the retaining walls.

  • outstanding

  • It reminds me the Edmunds Fitzgerald.

  • @nostalgiamelancolia The McCarthy is 1000 ft long and 105 ft wide. The Fitgerald was 729 ft long and 75 ft wide. 2 different styles of ships. They don't look similar at all.

  • That is what the toilet pipe looks like at my house. :3

  • This ship dwarfs the Edmund Fitzgerald.

  • Haha i was there...i even watched u video taping...it was kindda weird but i saw u it was kind of loud though... >.>

  • What Ship is that???

  • It's the Walter J. McCarthy Great Lakes Freighter.

  • correct usually hauling ore, coal stone ect

  • that is not a saltie

  • its a laker, it has the flat, normal bow because it doesnt have to deal with the rough seas and waves that you would see in the ocean.

  • @jimmybob116 Oh, you don't think so huh?! Try telling that to the family members of the sailors who died when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank off Whitefish Point!!! .....and all the others!!! ..or better yet, talk to some of the sailors still living who have been out there and seen how rough they lakes can get!!!

  • @MissVeronyka damn chill im not trying to be disrespectful, im just saying thats why they are like that

  • @jimmybob116

It has a flat deck because it is a bulk carrier, In this case coal. The deck has several hatch covers.

  • @jimmybob116 Actually Lake Superior is more treacherous to mariners than the oceans and the waves can be just as high. This ship is built this way because it is a bulk cargo carrier. It has several open hatches and the deck is lined with hatch covers. Visit the William A Irvin when you are in Duluth.

  • if i see that in real life i have to look away its like an eye sore to me lol

  • I love Duluth. Never tire of watching these huge boats!

  • Dang! That thing's huge!

  • that's what she said!

  • if you pause at 0:05 it does look like the Imperial-I Star Destroyer....

  • Thats pretty average sized actually.

  • yes it is...

i live in the twin cities but i've been in and through duluth many times whether im there for a hockey tournament or going snowmobiling but that it average size for Lake Superior.

  • Well, what I mean is that its an average sized "saltie" ocean going ship. We also have "Lakers" which are not as big. I live in Duluth and see these everyday. ;)

  • Lakers that go through the great lakes are far bigger than Salties that go through. This particular laker is a 1000 footer, which is about as big as they get, only a few are bigger, and not by much. Salties are typically less than 700 feet in length.

  • @revbasher444 The lakers such as the McCarthy are locked into the Great Lakes. They are too big to get out of the St Lawrence seaway. Simple as that. Otherwise they certainly could work on the ocean. The locks are very old and were built for much smaller ships.

  • Holy Shit!!

  • i love watching huge ships come in or leave when i go there.

  • Reminds me of the beginning of Spaceballs.

  • lol me 2

  • that isn't the irvin and hey i caught 4 walleye on the lake

  • Duluth is my home town. Ive been on a tour on that boat. it was really cool. and at Halloween they call it the haunted ship. i have never taken the tour of the haunted ship but my friends have. i have been down on the boardwalk a lot. its one of my favorite places in Duluth. i have went fishing in lake superior but i didn't catch anything.

  • uhhh bud

thats not the irving if you havent noticed

  • o soz

  • They don't give tours on the McCarthy. It's a coal hauler throughout the shipping season.

  • I visited duluth a couple weeks ago and saw this ship on the vista boat :)

  • Did u like duluth?

  • oh YEAHHH my dad lives there, i LOOOVE duluth :)

  • Holy crap. Thanks for the closeup vid.

  • suprisingly we see these ships almost every day in the summer

  • I hate it when they lift the bridge for the little Vista boat it gets me exited thinking its a big ship

  • I love duluth, go up there a couple times a year.

  • do u like duluth?

  • iv sold a lot of drugs in duluth and beat the shit out of two girls there too

  • I am so moving back to Duluth when I retire.

  • I've personally seen this ship come under the bridge. I have a relative that lives in Duluth and visit the bridge when I go visit him. This video does not do this ship justice. Unless you are standing there along the sea wall when it comes by, you just don't realize how huge this 1000 foot ship is. The Duluth Shipping News publishes all of the inbound and outbound shipping traffic each day, what they are carrying, and where they are going. A great service to look up if you like big ships.

  • damn seagulls. lol

  • Holy crap that's the Walter J. Macarthy Jr! That's the one that got it hold damaged!

  • These tankers sure are amazing!

You should also check out Freedom, Liberty and Independence of the Seas. The largest cruise ships in the world... for the next few years until we finish the Genesis class ships :)

(Forgive me for advertising, but gotta do it being Finnish and all :)

  • @xphs It is NOT a tanker!

  • @duluthusa it's not a tanker (like you said) it's a bulk carrier.

It's still smaller than the RMS Queen Mary 2, (NOTICE QM2 is different from the QE2

  • @TITANICLUSITANIA I didnt know the RMS Queen Mary 2 was an ore carrier, or the largest ship in the world. Our ships float

  • @IDIOTTSUNAMI Queen Mary 2 is not the largest ship in the world. It's the Largest Ocean Liner, the Largest ship is the Knock Nevis. The largest cruise ship is the Allure of the seas. This piece of shit is no competence.

  • @TITANICLUSITANIA I see you didn't catch the sarcasm, This is no ocean liner, its a laker,do you know the difference? The seaway lock is about 800f long, These 1000 footers are confined the to the upper Great Lakes,we have 12 of them, There are ore carriers longer than the Queen Mary 2 (just for the arguement) so I don't know what your bragging about, maybe you just need a little attention.

  • @IDIOTTSUNAMI No shit there are longer ore carriers than the Queen. No shit. -_-MS Vale Brasil is one of them. -_- I can see you didn't seem to decipher the rhetoric here. I wasn't asking you. This thing is still a small piece of shit, compared to an Ocean Liner, some Cruise ship, and the Knock Nevis or even the TI Asia. Actually even the MS Vale Brasil isn't even that much longer. A way longer ship would be, Knock Nevis, or the Batillus. Pathetic cunt.

  • @TITANICLUSITANIA WOW, you are a TITANICLOSER, can you tell me what flag the "Pathetic Cunt" sails under? , I'm not sure if its a ship, or if you are just signing your comment.

  • @TITANICLUSITANIA Thanks, I'll miss you little guy

  • @IDIOTTSUNAMI You're welcome madam

  • @TITANICLUSITANIA No Problemo

  • This ship had ruptured its hull while backing into its dock for the winter. The enginge room flooded and is now resting on the bottom in twenty feet of water. This happened about one week ago.

  • has posting comments been disabled?

  • yo thats all i see when i go there is the newer vessels with the aft pilot house, never once have i seen an older laker boat from the 50s with the pilot house at the bow and the engines at the stern

  • Mr. lifevest

    DUDE

There are 13 1000 footers in the Great Lakes so you haven't seen any bigger than that dude.

The Paul Trugurtha is 1013 but who can tell at that length.

  • I wonder what kind of machinery that's needed for pushing that enormous ship forward..

  • I work on Merchant Ships... they're nice to watch and some of them are so big the crew goes from the bow to the stern during their shifts on bicycles. Working on the ships sounds like a hard life, but the hours you work during the day are easy and the overtime is sick! Especially if you're in the SIU, cause then you can just work all over the world, not just the lakes. (This ship is owned by American Steamship Company, which crews its boats through the SIU)

  • yeah there were the two battleships but they were about 200 feet shy of the 1000 feet you see here.. Whats impressive are the air craft carriers we have 1065 feet in length with a beem of 250 feet and an almost 60 foot draft displaceing some 100,000+ tons of salt water...In fact they are far too big to even think of going through the canal... The canal is too small in depth and width...

  • Tryinu; the Titanic was only 883.5 feet long.

  • fonephat, What are you telling me this for?

  • tryinu;just For the heck it. Too many beers last night. fonephat.

  • Sounds like a good reason Fone!!!! LOL...

  • Tryinu; do you live in Duluth?. fone.

  • Fone, No I dont I am in the Navy stationed in San Diego..

  • tryinu: Did you see the video "ship hits bridge"?. Fone.

  • and to think there was 2 Japanese Battleships about that size... The Yamoto and the Musashi

  • That's the Walter J. Mcarthy Jr, no doubt headed for St Clair Edison with a load of coal.

  • The 1000 footers are nice. I've worked on the Indiana Harbor, the Gott and the the American Century.

  • are you sure thats real because that is one big mofo of a tanker

  • Absolutely! That's what impressed me so much about it.

  • dude ive been there its duluth, minnesota ive seen bigger then those

  • @nathanhobday1234

  • @nathanhobday1234 Yes it's real. She's not the largest, either. The largest laker is the Paul R. Tregurtha, stretching 1013 feet long. And she's not a tanker, it's an ore carrier.

  • I LOVE watching the laker vessels going through the canals! I've been in Duluth for several years now and even on a quiet day, you can hear the horns blow from miles inland. A few weeks ago I almost got caught on the lift bridge before it went up!

  • I hope you saw my other vid, taken just a few feet from here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y20JrjWcP1s

  • even the bridge looks like an ISD bridge lol
