the comparison between two shots is not fair, because in first instance, where shot was made without diffuser, the flash functions as a main light. In second instance shot made with a diffuser and the main light comes from left side and camera popup flash functions as a fill light. I think in both instances the pop up flash should function as main light, or as a fill light.
