That statement is pure drowsy, so The Band's music is so dull, that's obviously what made them one of the most popular/influential band of the 1960's? No, it's cause their music lacks lyrical sense and the instrumentals are consistant and boring right? Ya The Band is so horrible, more like freeking amazing. Have to comment about the comparison to Zep...I love Zep, but The Band was one of the most diverse musical ensembles ever. Zep was doing what Cream and others were doing back in the day. The Band could play country, they could play rock and R&B as well, and were doing something no one else was doing at the time. @sunriseRISE I am probably one of the biggest Band fans on YT; I saw them 3 times in '74; they were awesome; saw Levon this year..awesome again; I know their songs; their history; and I DO know they were one of the best rock bands to ever have graced a stage. Why would singers such as Jim James be part of a tribute album? Why would Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan say that The Band were the most versatile/talented musicians? I agree; this is not their best work. Vocals/blend off? Robs mic on?
@Free1108 .. bob dylan says lots things.. that dont mean much ...as for Eric -one trick pony' Clapton ( as far as i concerned) DLYAN WENT 2 NIGHTS IN A ROW - TO SEE THE HAWKS PLAYING in new jersey in 65 .. HE ONLY hired ROBBINSON.who says he was impressed cause DYLAN owned his own plane . @sunriseRISE I see that you and I will never agree. You almost know something. It is Robbie ROBERTSON and he was NOT the only one Dylan wanted. Levon left because he hated being booed on stage. This was when Dylan was "going electric" and the traditional folk fans felt him a traitor. Levon re-joined them in Woodstock at Big Pink during the Basement Tapes. You are way in the minority in your opinion of these multi-talented musicians; of course everyone has one. Have you listened to Last Waltz?
@Free1108 .. i guess we wont agree..BUT the true matter is Dylan couldnt keep time AND Levon was saying' cmon kid ARE WE a band?.. Dylans S ego and desperation to Copy the brit invasion's Power.DYLAN blew his relationship with BLOOMFIELD AND TO QUOTE Al cooper keyboards in dylans electric tour.. we just were not very good... ROBINSON later said once the band with 'Micky on drums' CAME TOGETHER we just turned bobs guitar off and done our own count in's...over rideing bobs bad timing
@sunriseRISE Well you are obviously retarded if you think 14 year olds can play this. But who cares whose better. All these bands from this time were all influential on each other. Most notably The Band was HUGELY influential on just about every group in the 60s. Notice how after they burst on to the scene with Music From Big Pink, EVERYONE from The Beatles to Clapton, to the Grateful Dead all changed their sound from the psychedelic 60s thing to be more roots and blues influenced. Coincidence?
@TheJseiler...... compare this to The BEATLES playing on the freezing cold rooftop in jan 1969..( GO WATCH).The Beatles are IN the top grade-- MACCAS BASS GTR PISSES OVER THIS..LENNON N HARRISION PLAY BETTER GUITAR's than Robinson.. Id EXPECT A BUNCH OF 14YRS olds in a HIGH SCHOOL BAND to ABLE TO DO this ...... yeah an THE Beatles split up 5 years befor this gig
@sunriseRISE I'm pretty sure thats the same comment that I just responded to. And believe me, I've seen every Beatles video there is to see, I've watched both bands pretty closely and I can tell you The Band were WAAAAYYY more capable musicians than The Beatles. Its true, George Harrison would be the first to admit that. Doesn't make one a better band than the other, but The Band seriously has some of the best musicianship in rock history live and in the studio.
I saw The Band in Calgary in 1970, a fine performance, a fond memory. This clip a few years' later is great! Richard Manuel is one of the best song writers, singers, and piano players of the great era of music proliferation in North America in the latter half or the 20th century, in my humble opinion.. And The Band looks and sounds so tight here. Garth and Robbie and Rick and Levon are also dancin' in this one, for sure!! Bring back this kind of music Mr DJ!!!
@MrWeakness2 Robbie's a fantastic songwriter, and he's done alot since The Band, just do some bloody research! He's actually mixing his upcoming album at the moment. Why does so many people seem to have a problem with Robbie?
@MrWeakness2 Even if Robbie hadn't done anything since The Band he would still have a catalogue that would put most writers to shame, but as it is he's produced several brilliant albums under his own name spawning such classics as "Hells half acre", "Somewhere down the crazy River", "Broken Arrow" and many more. He doesn't sit still either, he's collaberated with many artists covering many genres from American Indian tribal music to hip-hop. He's one of the greats,....fact.
The Band was sounding amazing as always compliments and hats off but what was up with the crowd standing so far back? Were they planning to play a football game with one end zone the crowd and the other Danko's bass?
Security was pretty tight; they'd made it real difficult to get access to the pitch if your didn't have the right tickets and a bunch of us had to make a rush down and jump past the guards to get onto the turf. Just made it too. It was a great party.
The Band came on early and seemed to act like superstars but then calmed down and played well; they did 'Smoke Signal' from Cahoots which I always loved and won't forget in a hurry.
Happy days indeed...although i didn't find security tight at all and got down on the pitch, into the football dressing rooms at the other end of the pitch, into the royal box and best of all backstage when CSNY were coming out to go on stage..David Crosby said "excuse me" and Neil Young passed behind me!!
RIchard's voice is amazing in that lower growling register, but it's a shame he couldn't hit a single one of those high falsetto notes.... a testament to the shape he was in I guess. Still my favorite white male vocalist of all time.
Sorry, yea I was totally only referring to this specific concert... he def hits those falsetto neck-hair-raising notes in many a Band song, but in this case, his voice shrivels up every time he tries.
P.S. My favorite falsetto vocal of Richard's is if you've ever seen The Band's Classic Albums DVD, Levon and John Simon are in the studio separating the vocals in "Rockin Chair," and you hear Richard's voice bounce from tonic to falsetto for the verse to chorus...it's really breath-taking.
Goodness me - I was there and have never forgotten that saxophone intro from Garth Hudson. Most people in the audience were there for Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young,- a bill of snoozy and complacent LA hippies, in short - and frankly the back of Wembley Stadium is not the best place to listen to anything, but that saxophone cut through all the crap then. And it still does. Thanks for posting.
Roy blows robbie out of the water! Robbie could write and was a great guitar player. But Roy just dominated and had complete control of his instrument.
Ray N,,,,,,,,,,You asked if this was on dvd someplace? Yes it is. The Band released a box set called 'A Musical History' in about 2005 or so. A real nice book with 5 cd's with music on it never released before. Stuff that goes back to pre Dylan when they were the Hawks. Plus it has a dvd with 'Whistle Stop' and much more on it. I have it and if your a fan it's worth the $80.00 or so...
Someone said Roy Buchanan could smoke Robbie. Funny thing is Roy had a short stint with Ronnie Hawkins while Robbie was there and they dropped Roy because he was nuts. Roy is a great player but Robbie played with more soul in his little finger then Roy ever did. There is a diff, and what made Robbie Robertson so great was he knew when not to play and many great guiatarist never get that...
it's pure showboating on robbie's part. so many pointless fills and he doesn't even let the music speak on it's own. he bends it to his own will on that song, and personally his constant riffage on that version kills it for me.
If anything, The Band may be the most-all-around talented band that was ever looked together. Levon played mandolin and guitar, Rick played fiddle. Richard played drums and guitar and Garth played about everything else under the sun. Their musicship (if that's a word) is what makes them legendary
@salsadestroyer I don't think so. Led Zeppelin had more record sales but they are not as talented and diverse as this band. This band can sing, all of them. Helm, Hudson, Danko and Manuel are all as good as you get. Jimmy Page is the most overrated guitarist in history, check out the Allman Brothers and than have a think about how much credit Page gets where he shouldn't. His solos are just overextended pieces of crap, with no melodic content. Ill take the Band anyday!
@mollyneerim Are you serious? Page overrated? No other guitarist can even shine his shoes. Page plays as though he's from a different Universe. Try watching 'The Song Remains the Same'. The Allman Brothers suck! Along with all the other Southern rock-crap. Only, (maybe), Steve Howe's guitar style can even come close to the intricacies of Page's riffs.
@salsadestroyer No way man... U serious?? Each member of the band could play three or four instrument with perfection. Plus you had three fantastic singers and one of the best songwriters of the 60/70's.
Rolling Stones also puts rappers on their covers these days. Like I said I love the guy and have been listening to The Band since I was in my cradle in 1971. As a group they are awesome and highly underrated. It's all just a matter of opinion and in mine he sounds like a stiff playing jam band solos. If his playing was judged pre-Band then who cares. No one could play then like they have since the 80s *I do agree that the guys at open stage are undrachievers however
Hmm I dunno... Robbie is # 78 on Rolling Stones 100 great guitarists of all time and no less a musician than Bob Dylan referred to him as a " mathematical guitar genius". If those guys at the "local open stage" are really that good they are seriously underachieving.
Robertson= god almighty. He is most definently better than any.. ANY guitar player in the world. Have you seen his solos? They're beautiful. Levon can suck a big fat one. If jesus was here (praise christ), then i guarantee you Robertson and he would have a guitar battle, and RR would most definently come out on top, maybe even with Jesus' head on the end of his guitar.
Robbie was (once upon a time...) a great guitarist, he said himself after he joined the band he cur back his focus on playing and replaced that with writing (he wanted to be just like Dylan). Unfortunately I've never heard any of the lead stuff he did while with Ronnie Hawkins...or Dylan (pre-Band).
No offense to Robbie; but Roy Buchanan, on a bad day, would roll Robbie up and smoke his ass. Buchanan is by far and wide a superior player & more diverse one as well.
It certainly was. I saw most of the top acts of the '70's but that was a day out to remember....which is surprising given how stoned me and my friends were!
calling him the GREATEST GUITARIST EVER is insane to me... there are others you just ahve to acknowledge are more skilled at the instrument... wether or not they are your favorites is one thing, and we all ahve our favorites... I'd rather lsiten to Robbie accompany Dylan than lsiten to Al Di Meola, but Robbie Robertson could never in a million years play the way Di Meola can, he just isnt good enough
Ok, that is almost seventy off the top of my head, plus another 4 guys that I know personally from playing with them over the years that are better... I didnt even TOUCH classical music, barely skimmed the session ranks, only mentioned a handful of bop and big band guitarists and I still was able to rattle off 70 people in 30 minutes that I KNOW can play the guitar better and with more versatility then Robbie Robertson ever could... like I said, I dig Robbie's ryhtym playing a lot, but
robbie is a good guitar player because he knows control. he has some of the greatest dynamics to his playing that i have ever seen in guitar players. the band is so fucking great with their arrangements (robbies job) the songs get so poppy, but at the same time right when your ears start to get used to the patterns they slightly change key or rhythm or whatever and that leaves the listener never feeling completely satisfied. you come back for more and more.
ASelinger - I wish there were more like you in the world. A lot of people don't realize what a gem this band was... if not for the Last Waltz and Robbie's acting ambitions I believe they could have been one of the all-time greats [they are my absolute favorite, but I encounter difficulty convincing others of this fact]. I always thought they were the overrated has-beens who played "Cripple Creek" until I discovered them via the Last Waltz... now I'm a full-time aficionado. This vid ROCKS! Thanks
some may call it bitter but hurt and angry would be a better way to describe it.
Rick was just as hurt(bitter) whatever you want to call it but he was also the peacemaker in The Band and a very forgiving person. as big as Rick was he was the gentlest of all of them as small as Levon was, well he was always ready for fistacuffs. i havent spoken with Lee since he was on L.I
doing a radio spot for wfuv 90.7fm. and a show with The Last Hombres i'll be catching up with him in Feb in N.J.
Garth Hudson in this video reminds me of John Entwistle of The Who. Everyone else is jumping around and he's there rockin' on his tenor, but standing still. Entwistle is kind of the same, he does awsome bass lines, but while Pete Townshend is jumping across the stage and Roger Daltry is swinging his mic, he just stands there. It's kind of like the ones who don't move play their instruments the best.
While I generally agree, people that don't move when they play are the best. Everyone in The Band is moving very very little compared to the ever energetic "The Who". The Band is really very stationary in their concerts.
I think you are right. Moving too much can get in the way of proper execution of the song, singing/playing the right note at the right time. Though some rock musicians can play technically great in SPITE of their movements. Think about SRV playing the guitar behind his back. This stuff probably boggles the mind of classical musicians where technique and precision has to be perfect!
Robbie is a genius who came from the streets in a Six Nations Reservations
If anything I think Levon is just jealous and terrible to libel about Robbie (the most important musician along with Dylan and The Beatles) of the 60's
You write songs called The night they drove old Dixie down, Stagefright, King Harvest and give them to your friends to sing, you stop your Band from touring before someone dies of their addictions and still some fuckwit calls you an Egomaniacal C**t. Human Beings (shakes head and exits stage right)
Have you ever seen Robbie Robertson interviewed anywhere?
I am not even going to bother with the body of what you just wrote because it is so absurdly off-kilter from reality that it isn't even worth arguing with you about. You are obviously a true believer in the almighty Robertson
As a songwriter and guitarist I am a fan of Robbie Robertson. However as a person...I don't know him, but I don't think very highly of him. As much as I know about the music business, that combined with reading Levon's biography. It paints a pretty clear picture for me. He bought their (Richard's, Rick's, and Garth's) livelihood from them without any intent to reform. The best part is that Levon never sold his rights to The Band's material...but hasn't seen a dime since the late 70's.
I believe there was a lot of bad blood and stuff that lead up to the ending of the Band - a lot of stuff that has never been written about or covered. I think that it's a little presumptious to suggest that all the blame should be laid at the feet of one guy (Robertson). There were five distinct and talented personalities in that group.
I never suggested it was all Robertson, but the christ-like picture painted of him by "russmiller01" sounds like a defense attorney for Robertson. His comment was a ridiculous oversimplification of the break up of The Band. And I stand by what I said, Robertson has a gigantic ego regardless of how The Band split.
I would respond to that by saying that all those guys had very strong egos and viewpoints. That's what made their music so good in the beginning and it's what eventually led to their downfall. I'm not just trying to defend Robertson; I just think it's unfortunate when one person is vilified for something going wrong when there were other volitile personalities in the mix as well.
But you see, I never blamed it on Robertson in entirety. I wasn't even commenting on the break-up really. I am only commenting on Robertson's love affair with himself. The other guy added the break-up to it, inferring that it
When they're sound checking Garth's mic, you hear someone (Rick maybe?) say "Too loud", then it gets louder. Awesome

You are way in the minority in your opinion of these multi-talented musicians; of course everyone has one. Have you listened to Last Waltz?
Free1108 1 year ago
@Free1108 .. i guess we wont agree..BUT the true matter is Dylan couldnt keep time AND Levon was saying' cmon kid ARE WE a band?.. Dylans S ego and desperation to Copy the brit invasion's Power.DYLAN blew his relationship with BLOOMFIELD AND TO QUOTE Al cooper keyboards in dylans electric tour.. we just were not very good... ROBINSON later said once the band with 'Micky on drums' CAME TOGETHER we just turned bobs guitar off and done our own count in's...over rideing bobs bad timing
sunriseRISE 1 year ago

AND RINGO CAN DRUM EVERYTHING N' MORE than LEVON ... BUT 'this'' here is uninmaginitive slop.. Empty-baroom PLOP by numbers.... .. Id EXPECT A BUNCH OF 14YRS olds in a HIGH SCHOOL BAND to ABLE TO DO this ...... yeah an THE Beatles split up 5 years befor this gig
sunriseRISE 1 year ago

If Robbie really "was" the songwriter he says he is, what has he done since leaving The Band ?
MrWeakness2 1 year ago
@MrWeakness2 Robbie's a fantastic songwriter, and he's done alot since The Band, just do some bloody research! He's actually mixing his upcoming album at the moment. Why does so many people seem to have a problem with Robbie?
SwedishCherryPie 1 year ago

LocalRailfan 2 years ago 2
ha, it was at wembley so if they were playing 'football' i doubt endzones would have been involved!!

Happy days...

P.S. My favorite falsetto vocal of Richard's is if you've ever seen The Band's Classic Albums DVD, Levon and John Simon are in the studio separating the vocals in "Rockin Chair," and you hear Richard's voice bounce from tonic to falsetto for the verse to chorus...it's really breath-taking.
aleester 2 years ago
Goodness me - I was there and have never forgotten that saxophone intro from Garth Hudson. Most people in the audience were there for Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young,- a bill of snoozy and complacent LA hippies, in short - and frankly the back of Wembley Stadium is not the best place to listen to anything, but that saxophone cut through all the crap then. And it still does. Thanks for posting.

There is a diff, and what made Robbie Robertson so great was he knew when not to play and many great guiatarist never get that...
jerry3759 2 years ago 2
well RB was a huge influence on JRR, no doubt about it, but i completely agree that robbie was ultimately the better musician

watch the weight from the waltz.
it's pure showboating on robbie's part. so many pointless fills and he doesn't even let the music speak on it's own. he bends it to his own will on that song, and personally his constant riffage on that version kills it for me.

If anything, The Band may be the most-all-around talented band that was ever looked together. Levon played mandolin and guitar, Rick played fiddle. Richard played drums and guitar and Garth played about everything else under the sun. Their musicship (if that's a word) is what makes them legendary

@RayNDeere they are great but that's ridiculous. Musician for musician, Led Zeppelin is WAY more talented.
salsadestroyer 1 year ago
@salsadestroyer I don't think so. Led Zeppelin had more record sales but they are not as talented and diverse as this band. This band can sing, all of them. Helm, Hudson, Danko and Manuel are all as good as you get. Jimmy Page is the most overrated guitarist in history, check out the Allman Brothers and than have a think about how much credit Page gets where he shouldn't. His solos are just overextended pieces of crap, with no melodic content. Ill take the Band anyday!
mollyneerim 1 year ago
@mollyneerim Are you serious? Page overrated? No other guitarist can even shine his shoes. Page plays as though he's from a different Universe. Try watching 'The Song Remains the Same'. The Allman Brothers suck! Along with all the other Southern rock-crap. Only, (maybe), Steve Howe's guitar style can even come close to the intricacies of Page's riffs.

Robertson= god almighty. He is most definently better than any.. ANY guitar player in the world. Have you seen his solos? They're beautiful. Levon can suck a big fat one. If jesus was here (praise christ), then i guarantee you Robertson and he would have a guitar battle, and RR would most definently come out on top, maybe even with Jesus' head on the end of his guitar.

dude.. levon recognized robbie's talents, he just had a problem with crediting some songs to himself.

It's kind of like the ones who don't move play their instruments the best.
lowbrasspiano999 3 years ago
Rick's sure moving, and he's sure one mean bass player...but I know what you're saying.
shoebobs 3 years ago 3
While I generally agree, people that don't move when they play are the best. Everyone in The Band is moving very very little compared to the ever energetic "The Who". The Band is really very stationary in their concerts.
ASelinger 3 years ago
I think you are right. Moving too much can get in the way of proper execution of the song, singing/playing the right note at the right time. Though some rock musicians can play technically great in SPITE of their movements. Think about SRV playing the guitar behind his back. This stuff probably boggles the mind of classical musicians where technique and precision has to be perfect!

Wamz1978 4 years ago
You write songs called The night they drove old Dixie down, Stagefright, King Harvest and give them to your friends to sing, you stop your Band from touring before someone dies of their addictions and still some fuckwit calls you an Egomaniacal C**t. Human Beings (shakes head and exits stage right)
russmiller01 3 years ago 7
Dude, have you seen "The Last Waltz"?
Have you ever seen Robbie Robertson interviewed anywhere?
I am not even going to bother with the body of what you just wrote because it is so absurdly off-kilter from reality that it isn't even worth arguing with you about. You are obviously a true believer in the almighty Robertson
Wamz1978 3 years ago
As a songwriter and guitarist I am a fan of Robbie Robertson. However as a person...I don't know him, but I don't think very highly of him. As much as I know about the music business, that combined with reading Levon's biography. It paints a pretty clear picture for me. He bought their (Richard's, Rick's, and Garth's) livelihood from them without any intent to reform. The best part is that Levon never sold his rights to The Band's material...but hasn't seen a dime since the late 70's.
obiwan6885 3 years ago
You read my mind.
Wamz1978 3 years ago
I believe there was a lot of bad blood and stuff that lead up to the ending of the Band - a lot of stuff that has never been written about or covered. I think that it's a little presumptious to suggest that all the blame should be laid at the feet of one guy (Robertson). There were five distinct and talented personalities in that group.
mastermold2008 3 years ago
I never suggested it was all Robertson, but the christ-like picture painted of him by "russmiller01" sounds like a defense attorney for Robertson. His comment was a ridiculous oversimplification of the break up of The Band. And I stand by what I said, Robertson has a gigantic ego regardless of how The Band split.
Wamz1978 3 years ago
I would respond to that by saying that all those guys had very strong egos and viewpoints. That's what made their music so good in the beginning and it's what eventually led to their downfall. I'm not just trying to defend Robertson; I just think it's unfortunate when one person is vilified for something going wrong when there were other volitile personalities in the mix as well.
mastermold2008 3 years ago
But you see, I never blamed it on Robertson in entirety. I wasn't even commenting on the break-up really. I am only commenting on Robertson's love affair with himself. The other guy added the break-up to it, inferring that it
