@CounterCultureLives It has pushers (more efficient) all lifting wings (more efficient) and a LIFTING FUSELAGE. Imagine the speed and range! Well done Piaggio! I made a balsa canard glider 7" wingspan and nearly 2" round section (lifting) fuselage. See on u tube how far it went. It's called "WHIRLWING VTOL PAV (GLIDE TEST)".
What a rounded cockpit, almost like flying an egg, I am blessed to live close to a local airport home to someone that owns one, the sound signature is distinct enough for me to race out of the house to see it whenever its overhead
I saw one of these...it's an American design that was burdened by govt that did not understand composite materials...the company was forced to add ,ore and more reinforcements until the advantages of light weight construction were lost...only about 25 were built and I believe the Italian company bought the planes.
I saw it in Davenport, Iowa at the local airport.
Nope..., no counter-rotating propellers on the Avanti. The propellers do spin in opposite directions to reduce torque but not on the same drive shaft.
I recently got some video of a P-51 with a Rolls-Royce Griffon engine and a pair of polished aluminum counter-rotating propellers which is pretty sexy. I'll have it up on YouTube later.
@oskarbider99 According to the pilots handbook, Avanti II uses Pratt PT6A-66 turboprops which are in fact contra-rotating, but I have yet to find this information elsewhere
@R5H4D0W Speaking as an experienced psychologist, I can tell you that one of the greatest selling points of this plane is the square wave sound, which becomes considerably louder during take-off. Some P180 Avanti II's are owner flown, and the sound emitted draws attention to the plane and satisfies the pilot's need for recognition. In clinical terms, it's akin to the owner / pilot symbolically "farting" down the runway.
I'm not really a psychologist. I just made that up.
These things have such a unique howl. First time I saw one I thought it was a Starship, but was surprised when it wasn't. Several of these appear to live in the TPA area.
One of these just flew over my house here in Portland, OR about 20 minutes ago. What a coincidence that I find this video. Knew something unusual was in the air, so I had to take a look. Very unique sound.
Funny, with the Avanti and the TBM850 the Europeans build by far the best turbine airplanes to date... A jet only makes sense if you can go supersonic, which none of them can.
This aircraft is quite a high-performance piece! Close to 400ktas! Looks like it accelerates rapidly and climbs well, too. How 'hot' is the aircraft? That is, what is the stall, approach, V2 etc.? I haven't looked at the planform specs, but it seems There Must Be High Wing Loading! Such a slight amount of wing this pretty thing has!
The design is pretty forward thinking. On most planes, the tail produces downforce to keep the noise up, pivoting on the wings. Hence the wings provide the lift and the tail produces negative lift, at all times while the plane is in flight. You could argue this creates excessive drag. The Avanti's tail AND canard wings both produce lift (amazingly the fuselage shape produces lift as well!), allowing a reduction in wing size. Check it out on wikipedia!
I saw this type a few decades ago...it landed at Davenport, Iowa's airport....the FAA at the time didn't understand the new method of making airplanes (Boeing 787 is an example of the understanding which is commendable)...with all the forced changes, the airplane lost the competitive edge...the current owner purchased the company and here it is.
@RomaniaTricolor Ferraris are not made by Piaggio. Piaggio just makes weird stuff, like that scooter with two front wheels, it's just ugly and stupid.
I see what appears to be a relatively flat profile right after rotation. As the airspeed builds, it rotates to, say, 15 deg? Is this flight profile related to a canard; or is it only the Avanti?
The Avanti is a beautiful airplane. The only problem with it is that is suffers from 'short legs'. I wish the aircraft had a 1500-2000 NM range, then it would be near perfect.
So let me get this thing straight... the compressor of the engine is facing the cockpit and the hot portion(the turbine) is facing the prop, right? and if this is so it means that all the hot gases flow against the prop's blades... Aren't those blades heating up or something?
We've got a couple of these rolling through our FBO from different companies in the states, and all I can say is that the pilots can't stop talking about them. From what I've seen, really nice inside. Yet to fly, or fly in one.
I fly 109sl, its one of our fleet aircraft. Props in the back reduce noise for the passengers, also allows for laminar flow over the wing increasing lift. Mach .70 is the limit, it may do .73 but you will be in overspeed and warnings will be going off. And yes, after flying both the King Air and this P180...IMO the P180 is a much better airplane. This is in no way to diminish the King Air. I loved the 200 I used to fly, but this thing has it beat in many regards.

@captainjman1976 hi Cpt. Jman, i have a question for you purely out of interest, say i was wealthy enough, brand new, what would this beautifull aircraft cost me to buy, the Piaggio Avanti. please get back to me as i am extremely curious on this.
@1Gaumer Will it climb like an F15, vertically on its tail to 40,000 feet in 30 seconds? no. But its performance is good enough to get into some of the smaller, tough airports. Its all relative. I can tell you we do go places other aircraft can not because we have exceptional performance. FUEL: I don't fuel them personally so I don't really care about the fact they take a while to fuel, I would say waiting for the fuelers to turn in the slip so we can pay takes longer than fueling! :) LOL
@captainjman1976 You ever had landing gear issues? That's the no 1 cause for incidences as far as I know...Other than that you never hear anything from the Avantis.. I fly a Varieze... Nothing smoother in turbulence than a canard aircraft
It was the first certified composite aircraft and the FAA had Burt Rutan and Beech over-build it. It then came in overweight and didn't make the performance number guarantees. They all went back to Ma'ma Beech and were used for charter. Then not long afterwards were all bought back (all but one) and were made and grounded by Beech since they were a big disappointment.

I'm assuming that the central place of worship will be an actual Piaggio P180, brand new straight off the production line fitted out suitably for the needs of the church. Services to be held at 31,000 feet?! Yeah.
Actually, we'll hold services in the hangar. The Avanti II will be a flying holy shrine reserved for me, my closest advisers, and our most generous donors. I've finally settled on a name for myself.
"Bhaggwan PassMeYoMoolah".
We need an exalted High Priest. Think you might be interested??
I'd like to give it some thought, but I sure would appreciate the thought of entering the holy shrine. If not I could be one of the altar boys and swing the incense burner?
Well head altar boy in charge of the many who I can send out to raise the spondooliks. I've also written to Robert Plant for a contribution to the founding the the Piaggio church. He's quite a gemerous guy.
well i guess you can call this a canard configuration very efficiant set up when you look at it you realize all the surfaces main wing plus the front canard help lift the craft as opposed to conventional aircraft where upon rotation the horizontal stabilazor pushes down to get the nose to point up plus these pusher props make for a very efficiant use of props thrust must be fast and fuel efficient
@motokid032 All the sims are well and good but jeezus h christ is pisses me off to click on some "miraculous" or "very cool" wondrous aviation event on You Tube to find some prepubescant asshole has posted a freakin video - as in not the real thing - of some flight sim shit so some hard rock song. Who gives a flying shit that they can take off from XYZ on a flight sim? Thats wonderful but why post a video of it?
One of the coolest looking planes ever built. Applause to Piaggio in having the guts to do that. And with a speed of almost 740 kmh (460mph) it is faster than most WW2 figthers. And nearly as fast a a Cessna Citation ... :-)
Yeah, that and the air off the wings I believe. The Cessna 337 push-pull twin has a similarly distinctive sound. The pusher configuration is more efficient I believe but the varying speeds and directions of the air hitting the prop causes a fair percentage of that noise I have read. Flying Magazine did a good story on these a few months back. Thanks for the vid! John in Brisbane
I'm not sure whether it was the same model as this aircraft, but I saw a similar configuration business plane fly overhead, pretty cool but unusually loud for a plane on final approach. Much louder than the much larger MD-80's that I'm used to! Any thoughts on why this is?
I'm pretty certain you heard an Avaniti and there's been a lot of discussion on the sound of the plane. You'll like this from a Feb. 13, 1988 issue of Flight International about the MD-80 UHB (a turboprop pusher airline demonstrator), that "the GE36 produced the 'buzz saw' whine charactaristic of propfans and high-bypass ratio turbofans at full power." A Wikipedia article states the Avanti "makes a distinctive square wave noise..." I know I can easily recongnize the plane from a distance.
My impression -- the hot exhaust gases of the turbines only travel a few inches before being sliced up by five-bladed 85-inch propellers. I may be wrong but the smaller propeller diameter gives a higher frequency producing the "buzz saw" sound. I've only seen the Beechcraft Starship fly a few times and it had more of a "thrush" sound; its propellers were five-bladed, 104-inch diameter. Search YouTube for "Starship Times Two" and compare.
Also the Starship used pure turboprops the Avanti uses Turbofans a fully different set up, look up a 441 and listen to the propjets if you wanna hear something out of the norm.
Worlock - If you've tried to sound educated, you've failed miserably at it. Do you even know what a turbofan is? This IS A TURBOPROP! NOT A TURBOFAN. Its not a propfan either (just in case you're trying to get at that). This is a PT-6 A Turboprop - pure and simple.
yea the avanti has a very distinct sound. my airport has a few meridians, king airs and other turbos based at it, but you can always tell when the avanti is on approach before seeing it
I live near KBCT and regularly see (and hear) these beautiful aircraft around . They are really loud and unusual sounding . Once you hear one you don't forget it .
Wow we're lucky! I hadn't seen the "Avanti Acrobatic" video in a while and went back to watch it again -- It's been "REMOVED BY USER" for some reason. Strange and sad! I'll try to check for it in a few days to see if it's been re-submitted.
Is this the same P-180 I see flying into and out of Oakland International regularly?

Actually, Billy Mays was in the process of buying a fractional ownership through Avantair; he never owned a P180 outright.

If I could just earn a few more millions I place an order?
pollyparrotable 2 years ago
I've decided that I have to have one. Where will I get the bread??
EASY!! I'm starting my own televangelist ministry!! How does this sound??
"The Faith In Eternal Profits Church!!"
Please send me your E-mail address so that we can enroll you as a tithing member!!
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
Heh heh . . . great idea. Let's order two!!
pollyparrotable 2 years ago
Your money is ALWAYS welcome at The Faith In Eternal Profits Church!!
Please, everybody!! We are in dire need of a suitable "flying house of worship"!! ;o)
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
I'm assuming that the central place of worship will be an actual Piaggio P180, brand new straight off the production line fitted out suitably for the needs of the church. Services to be held at 31,000 feet?! Yeah.
pollyparrotable 2 years ago
Actually, we'll hold services in the hangar. The Avanti II will be a flying holy shrine reserved for me, my closest advisers, and our most generous donors. I've finally settled on a name for myself.
"Bhaggwan PassMeYoMoolah".
We need an exalted High Priest. Think you might be interested??
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
I'd like to give it some thought, but I sure would appreciate the thought of entering the holy shrine. If not I could be one of the altar boys and swing the incense burner?
pollyparrotable 2 years ago
You just want to be an alter boy?? Well, that's possible. I guess it'll depend upon your fund raising abilities!!
I'm not sure that alter boys would be permitted to partake of the Sacramental Beer!!
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
Well head altar boy in charge of the many who I can send out to raise the spondooliks. I've also written to Robert Plant for a contribution to the founding the the Piaggio church. He's quite a gemerous guy.
pollyparrotable 2 years ago
well i guess you can call this a canard configuration very efficiant set up when you look at it you realize all the surfaces main wing plus the front canard help lift the craft as opposed to conventional aircraft where upon rotation the horizontal stabilazor pushes down to get the nose to point up plus these pusher props make for a very efficiant use of props thrust must be fast and fuel efficient
bernard240vdc 2 years ago
The P180 is not a true canard; the forward lifting surface does not move. Looks like canard, but it isn't!!
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
@Outlaw1257 actually, there are flaps on there, but you are right, its not a canard.
vinceAV8R 2 years ago
Looks extremely safe to fly, but what would I know.
Lovely little plane, could you just imagine having one of these outside on your own personal landing strip, gives me goose bumps.
zuludelta100 2 years ago
As long as your landing strip is asphalt or concrete!!
The P180's a no-go for soft fields.
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
@Outlaw1257
1. It is certified for soft field (different tires)
2. Why would you .. If you had a ferrari, it COULD drive on gravel roads... but why would you do that to your investment?
3. Not many soft fields left that I see.. they are pretty rare. (then again I dont look for them)

Who gives a flying shit that they can take off from XYZ on a flight sim? Thats wonderful but why post a video of it?

something around $5 million
maverick967 2 years ago
I was looking at some Piaggio Avanti's online the other day that had a price tag of around $6.5 million.
AviationNation787 2 years ago
Yeah, I saw those planes too. I also put a bid in on one!!
Times are tough inn the airplane business, that is for sure. The broker I spoke with told me that the $6.5 Million price was firm.
I offered $6,499,947.63 and told him that I would throw in two large garbage bags filled with crushed beer cans.
The owner jumped at the offer like white on rice!! He even agreed to pay the FedEx bill to have them shipped!!

i want one

One of the coolest looking planes ever built. Applause to Piaggio in having the guts to do that. And with a speed of almost 740 kmh (460mph) it is faster than most WW2 figthers. And nearly as fast a a Cessna Citation ... :-)

Doesn't look slow to me.

ferrari maufactures the avanti. a friggin ferrari airplane! TOO COOL

yup, but incredibly slow though. ferrari built but ford p.o.s. speed.

Mach .7 is a Ford?
MaggotBrain10 2 years ago
um yeah....fast isnt till you get to .82
beergut111 2 years ago
Incredibly slow?? This is not a jet, but it holds numerous speed records for a turboprop.
I'd much rather slum along at the snail pace of about 370kts. in the comfort of the P180 than be jammed into a fast, but noisy and cramped Lear 35!!
Outlaw1257 2 years ago
Ferrari does not manufacture the aircraft; however, the Ferrari family is a major stockholder in Piaggio.

It took almost four years but I finally got a video of the Avanti on short final and a landing roll. You can find it by doing a search for:
KLVK Avanti Update
paralleler 2 years ago
Yeah, that and the air off the wings I believe. The Cessna 337 push-pull twin has a similarly distinctive sound. The pusher configuration is more efficient I believe but the varying speeds and directions of the air hitting the prop causes a fair percentage of that noise I have read. Flying Magazine did a good story on these a few months back. Thanks for the vid! John in Brisbane
hogey74 2 years ago
I'm not sure whether it was the same model as this aircraft, but I saw a similar configuration business plane fly overhead, pretty cool but unusually loud for a plane on final approach. Much louder than the much larger MD-80's that I'm used to! Any thoughts on why this is?
JonND11 2 years ago
I'm pretty certain you heard an Avaniti and there's been a lot of discussion on the sound of the plane. You'll like this from a Feb. 13, 1988 issue of Flight International about the MD-80 UHB (a turboprop pusher airline demonstrator), that "the GE36 produced the 'buzz saw' whine charactaristic of propfans and high-bypass ratio turbofans at full power." A Wikipedia article states the Avanti "makes a distinctive square wave noise..." I know I can easily recongnize the plane from a distance.
paralleler 2 years ago
My impression -- the hot exhaust gases of the turbines only travel a few inches before being sliced up by five-bladed 85-inch propellers. I may be wrong but the smaller propeller diameter gives a higher frequency producing the "buzz saw" sound. I've only seen the Beechcraft Starship fly a few times and it had more of a "thrush" sound; its propellers were five-bladed, 104-inch diameter. Search YouTube for "Starship Times Two" and compare.
They're both beautiful and distinctive aircraft.
paralleler 2 years ago
Also the Starship used pure turboprops the Avanti uses Turbofans a fully different set up, look up a 441 and listen to the propjets if you wanna hear something out of the norm.
worlock1422 2 years ago
Worlock - If you've tried to sound educated, you've failed miserably at it. Do you even know what a turbofan is? This IS A TURBOPROP! NOT A TURBOFAN. Its not a propfan either (just in case you're trying to get at that). This is a PT-6 A Turboprop - pure and simple.
Idiot
duckfandango 2 years ago
yea the avanti has a very distinct sound. my airport has a few meridians, king airs and other turbos based at it, but you can always tell when the avanti is on approach before seeing it
stormthorgerson 2 years ago
live by CDW, always a nice blue avanti hanging around, my house is under the landing corridor
stormthorgerson 2 years ago
I live near KBCT and regularly see (and hear) these beautiful aircraft around . They are really loud and unusual sounding . Once you hear one you don't forget it .
skink5150 3 years ago
Wow we're lucky! I hadn't seen the "Avanti Acrobatic" video in a while and went back to watch it again -- It's been "REMOVED BY USER" for some reason. Strange and sad! I'll try to check for it in a few days to see if it's been re-submitted.
