Oh dear, maybe this is why people like to include me in their social groups. I can't stand displays of affection except for the one hug from my best friend every blue moon. But that just makes the act mean all the more, you know?
I was finding this funny until I realised that the character David is playing may as well be a toned down version of me XD He's just saying what I have always thought - I've never put a x on the end of a text, even if I probably should. A nice friendly :-) will be fine for me. Maybe it'll save me having to fake a smile when I actually meet the person I'm texting?
@TacticusPrime An 'X' doesn't look like a kiss, it's phonetic. The sound an 'X' makes (when used in a word) is "ks", which is basically like the word "kiss" shortened (obviously this only works when you aren't thinking of 'X' when it's pronounced "zz"). So 'XX' would be pronounced "ks-ks". Get it?
@TacticusPrime Obviously the 'O' is not phonetic, that one's visual, it looks like a hug (arms forming a circle) (as @junbh2 already pointed out). The 'X' is phonetic (like the word "kiss") the 'O' is visual. It's not rocket science. Frankly, you're coming perilously close to trolling by repeating questions that have already been answered. If that's not your goal, then just accept that this is a globally accepted shorthand and doesn't need to be put through a debate.
@IllusionXIII So one is phonetic while the other is visual? That's bullshit. People need to stop mixing their metaphors. Besides, the O doesn't even look like a hug. It looks like puckered lips.
@TacticusPrime Whatever. If you have a girlfriend, go ahead and put "OO" at the end of a letter, and you can argue with her about why that should mean "kiss kiss". Have fun with that.
@richardcadbury an exaggerated version of themselves, or in fact how the media/public sees them. playing up to their 'images' - that a lot of people invent based on their characters in Peep Show
@Isanion i think thats something ive always really liked about Mitchell and Webb myself. when i first knew about them as the "mac and pc" guys and my mate lent me a peep show dvd, i loved how well i could relate to the characters and i was kind of drawn into their comedy through the reality portrayed in their style. seems that there are a lot od david mitchells out there and i for one dont like dancing!!
@Isanion Haha it's fine bro. My girlfriend used to be "that guy" and she would never show affection, but she warmed up eventually after repeated contact with an out going person like me. You'll open up eventually, I promise.
I need to play this to people when they complain about my lack of "X".

David Mitchell actually looks nearly identical to Peter Hitchens in this sketch...I wonder if that`s what he was `doing`.

Hearing David Mitchell talk about kissing gave me butterflies in my stomach. Love him! :) <3 xx

Anyone else notice that the first message (the one ending with an 'x') is from Martin?

I always thought X was a hug, and O was a kiss. The phrase is "hugs and kisses, and the symbols are XOXO, so it makes sense in my head.
TacticusPrime 1 year ago
@TacticusPrime O is a hug because it's a circle, like putting your arms around someone.
junbh2 7 months ago
@junbh2 But O looks like a kiss. How does X look like a kiss? It could very well be open arms.

@IllusionXIII I hear the reason for the X is because it looks like lips when you kiss, imagine a profile view.
hazzajjjk 2 months ago
@hazzajjjk Sure, that could make sense too. Ultimately the entire thing is speculative.
IllusionXIII 1 month ago
@hazzajjjk It's because of how you pronounce x in lower case
