I think my favorite part is the way the tempo picks up toward the end, spinning into a guitar "tour de force", before descending into a pit of synthesizer fury!
You know how you can tell Kansas is magical? Because Steve Walsh is beating those keyboards like an infant and still making the most awesome and beautiful music ever. Even Phil ehart looks like he's about to OD back there and he is kicking more ass than you could even imagine. THAT IS HOW YOU CAN TELL KANSAS IS MAGICAL!
Robby Steinhardt is the greatest musician of all time... Kansas is my favorite band, they have been for years, there is alot of really interesting and talented groups out there, but few have had such a profound impact on music itself, the song journey from mariabronn changed my life, it has such deep meaning and incredible jams. Mother Earth is hurting, and a reminder like this masterpiece has Relevance today as well as yesterday....Thank you for the upload, i own the vinyl in my collection.
Few of today's artists could even touch this level of musicianship. You can have anything that's considered "popular" today, give me the real deal. This is the real deal. The haters are just brainwashed by the simplistic prefab top 40 garbage they had shoved by their throat their whole lives.
Recently bought the 30th anniversary collection just for these Rock Concert performances. truely amazing live performances all 5 songs, 3 from 74 and 2 from 75.
This was Kansas!!! The way I saw them in Topeka at their album release concert (my very 1st live show when I was 13 - can you say "early thrash?"). Sorry kids, with this as a benchmark for all concerts to come, nothing ever came close.
You are still acting like you are 13! Don't you have anything better to do with your time than to go to Kansas postings on You-tube and dis them?! If you don't like Kansas don't listen! Oh! I forgot, I'm talking to an adolescent! So I'm sure I'll see you again and again showing up on these Kansas posts troweling out your oh so clever garbage!
I never thought it, but now that you mention it, I think Andre did get his fashion tips from Rich. I always used to call Rich "the giant" long before I ever knew their was an "Andre. Great analogy.
Ricky ... don't get me wrong. I love Kansas. As a young kid growing up in the mid-west, it was so inspiring to me that a band that good could be from just "down the road." Masque is my favorite.
I didn't get you wrong I was agreeing with you! "Can I tell you" "what's on my mind"! "All I wanted" was to say your right about the chair and in conclusion I've "Got to rock on"! Catch you later Zott!
Yeah isn't that hilarious! I commented on another post from this show about that chair(probably from a dining room set)He deserves a throne for what he's created over the years! I heard that not long before this show was taped that there was a fire in the apartment complex storage area where he lived in Topeka and the band stored a lot of equipment!Maybe he hadn't gotten around to replacing his chair yet!
I compliment you, Alcarlos, on (not just the content of but) the quality of your videos that you've uploaded! They're so clear. Good job, keep 'em coming! Rock on Kansas fans!
bands need 2 go back to this..raw & pure, the real deal no bullshit. without all the gimmickery & poseur slick garbage to hide behind. ditch the image-over-substance front, throw away fancy digital toys & computer crutches, crank it up + PLAY! That's what music used to be. Music has become so watered down, soulless & tame these days, castrated to extremes. it's all about appearance over talent, marketing presentation over the message in these devolved PC bullshit times. Long live real musicians
What exactly are you looking for? If you mean a copy of the video you are in luck! Locate a copy of "Kansas Sail On The 30th Anniversary Collection" It contains 2 CD's and 1 DVD! This song as well as 4 others are on the DVD from the 2 Kansas appearances on the T.V. show "Don Kirshners Rock Concert"! It is well worth the money! If you meant something else please clarify!
Yes indeed it is! It was their first appearance on Don Kirschners Rock Concert and it was before the release of the first album! What "Can I Tell You " Vid did they dump?
WOOHOO!! The vid from the Don Kirshners concert in 1974 The song "Can I tell you something" I think It's from this concert. I think I can find the box set on Ebay. Thanks rickyon
It is from this concert in 1974 and you can get the "Sail On - 30th anniversary box set for cheap if I'm not mistaken. I think I saw it for around $25.
Google Kansas Sail On The 30th Anniversary Collection. The DVD is listed as Disc 3 and all of the videos are listed. I think there are 16 plus in between every one they interview the band members. Sort of like a directors cut.
My dad watched them live before they even had their first cd out. They opened for Blue Oyster Cult and he said that when they came ou after Kansas was done, half of the people just got up and left because Blue Oyster Cult sucked so bad compared to Kansas.
You mean their first album(back in 1974 there were no C.D.'s) Must have been a bad night for B.O.C. because I saw them around the same time and they kicked ass! I guess everyone has bad nights including Kansas( I've seen a couple!)
rickyon, you just took me back 30 years! I was in a band in high school and we played DOA at my junior homecoming. We actually had people slow dancing to it (go figure) I loved that tune. Just the right amount of creepy. thanks.
One of the trademarks Kansas had was the tuxedo Rich Williams wore when they hit the big time; before he usually wore overalls. I think the tux was symbolic: "rags to riches"...
Pity Kansas doesn't sound like this anymore,Robby is absolutely beautiful singing this tune,I miss robby with Kansas and Steve Walsh's excellent singing, unlike today :(
Holy chit! What a great old tune. Thanks for putting it up. You can tell how old this video is by the way the band is set up: Steve on the left of the drums; Rich in the center with Robbie on his right Dave far right Great song
Kerry Livgren is a great jamming guitar player. I just saw him play this song last week in Kansas City with his band Proto~Kaw which was the original version of Kansas before they got famous. This was one of the many jamming psychodelic tunes from the early 70's that they play and it sounds just as good now as it did back then. Anybody that likes this song should check them out, they are a great jam prog band doing new music that sounds like old music, great stuff.
Not sure what you mean by "moment of glory", Livgren wrote most of the Kansas music and either Walsh or Steinhardt did lead vocals. Livgren isn't a singer.
What a great performance. These old Kansas vids are such a treat to see for all us hard core fans. Wondering if they did "Apercu" at this particular show. That's my favorite tune from the KANSAS album and would love to see it live. You rock, Al! Thanks for posting.
All of the 1st Kansas album is awesome ALL the way thru. BTW, my fave song from that album is Death of Mother Nature Suite. Got remastered version in '04 @ Tower Records cause mt dad had same Cd but older copy
Kansas was singing about topics such as the environment, mistreatment of Native Americans and patriotism long before they were fashionable or chic to do so.
If you took a picture of the guys on stage without their instruments and showed someone it with tag:Greatest American Progressive band, would they believe it? How many prog bands have guys who wear overalls?
Do you have the video for that "ROCK CONCERT" band they opened for?
