Are you considering doing similar freelance work when your contract is up? People seem to prefer it but I'm unsure about the work and do not know if there are any visa restrictions on private tutoring in China.

This is what happens for sure. Chinese suggest goal posts. You confirm, so this is how it will be, and then on the day, 5 minutes before, the goal posts are moved, generally to your disadvantage.
