IT'S SAID THAT CLAPTON LEFT THE GROUP 'CAUSE OF THIS SONG. HE LIKED BLUES, R&B- BUT THE YARDBIRDS ALSO PLAYED BLUES-AND NOW HIS SOLO CAREER IS FULL OF POP SONGS.
@Bulldog17ful Clapton did play on this song originally...on the album...
but he left the group right after the album was recorded. The tried to bring in Jimmy Page but he turned it down at the time, wanting to continue to do session work. So, they brought in Jeff Beck, who is who you see playing in this video. In 1966 Jimmy Page was finally fed up with session work and joined the band.on Bass..although he did switch to lead guitar and Chris Dreja switched to Bass.
@Bulldog17ful If you look through YouTube for a song called Happenings Ten Years Time Ago....you should be able to find the video with both Jeff and Jimmy playing lead....although Jeff has the primary lead in it.....
Keith Relf is the singer..also a great blues harp player..he was taken by electrocution in 1977 I believe...sad epitaph...These guys were raw here ...
Rock Star = Keith Relf! Here,in his shades with the Brian Jones hairdo,Jeff Beck also in the mid 1960's!! Love these guys fashions (and music) even more in 66/67 when flower power came in! WOW!What an amazing fucking time to be young!!
essa banda é muito foda, conheci com HEART FULL OF SOUL e aprendi logo a tocar ela no violao e agora quero tocar FOR YOUR LOVE pois é muito massa essa musica \,,/
I always loved The Yardbirds since the late 70's wen I read in an interview that the guitarrist from LZ was in the Ybirds. They have so many fantastic songs!! Keith Relf and the guy from Sandy Denny's band Zephyr both if I'm not mistaken and @ about the same time. I like the song where they are all humming sorry I 4got the name but Shapes Of Things and all Yardbird songs.4 a time I thot that song by the Blues McGoo's was Yardbirds 'koz of that riff u know what one I'm talking about(?)
@duqmiguel You are absolutely correct, it's great to meet people that appreciate the Yardbirds and know about the history/trivia behind them. Keith Relf was born in 1943 and Tom Petty in 1950. Petty formed the the HeartBreakers in 1976, the same year that Keith electrocuted himself practicing with an ungrounded guitar/amplifier (5/14/76). That's one for the records, how many famous musicians have been electrocuted by their instrument??? I can't think of another, can you? Let me know if you do.
@91fatboy51 The guy from Zephyr same thing happened to him. That was the band with Sandy Denny I think.Anyway, The Yardbirds were always so fantastic when I read back in the 70's that the lead guittarrist from Led Zep was in this band I started listening to them and I love every song they play. For a time I thot that song by the Blues McGoo's was The Yardbirds 'koz that riff sounds similar 2 Zeppelin.Shapes of Things is a wicked cool song!! and I 4get the name of that song where they are humming.
@TheMcSomething You are right, but he lived thru the electrical Zap, I think?.. At least his body did, his mind?.. Another one for the record is Brad Delp, lead vocalist for the band Boston, only person on record (that I know) committed suicide by using 2 BBQ grills, he loaded them up with lit charcoal, pulled them into his bathroom, stuffed towels around the doors and lay down and waited. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning on the bathroom floor. Makes you wonder, what is inside their heads...
the original guitarist on this song was eric clapton not jeff beck and he got the sitar effect fm a 12 string while lying on his back in the studio with a shit load of beer in him
These guys sure made a good choice with Beck as guitarist. Here, he does an amazing job of simulating a harpsichord live on 12-string, later on "Heart Full of Soul" he reproduces a sitar on 6-string! His guitar-hero antics on the live version of "I'm a Man" are beyond crazy for that time. He really did a lot to put them on the map and create the first hard rock/metal guitar sounds, yet seems to get little credit, even from his fellow Yardbirds.
This is brilliant! Why oh why is new "music" such rubbish!? I would kill to see a 60's group live! Real instruments, real singers . . . sigh. Everybody's stone bonkers today as far as I'm concerned.
@a11mykn33gr0w5 I was only referring to more mainstream, such as rap, hip-hop, club, etc. I'm into newer indie stuff (I am starting a retro-y group myself, as well). Thank you for the suggestions, I will make sure to check them out :)
@EmilyARTS I agree with you to a certain degree. There is still talent out in the ether yet everyone is so caught up in the "popular" music that they have no idea what originality is anymore. I am young but i try to keep an open mind to all kinds of music and that which really stands out from the "mainstream". The so called "popular" music that you hear on the radio today is not talent, it takes a singer and a song they didn't write to be radio worthy.
A good tune, maybe not great, but certainly influential on the world of rock. This was the song which pushed Clapton to quit the band, apparently because A) it wasn't blues, and B) because it had no lead guitar in the song (the studio version used no guitar at all, only harpsichord). When Beck joined (and later Page), it really opened up the Yardbirds to the versatility of style that allowed the creation of my favorite Yardbirds music.
Yardbirds - I really love your kind of raw and unpolished garage style of rock music. My hobby is to rediscover all those bands that did not become as successful as you were - the bands that didn´t "broke through. It´s a fantastic musical treasure. Listen (Youtube) for example to:
THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah"
Really f....g good with a bloody driving beat.
THE GOLLIWOGS and the song "Tell me". Check up the singer...Yes...it´s him!!!!
I really love this song. It reminds me of a great period of my life. The Yardbirds was one of my "idols". At that time it was a little bit "heavy" to dig unknown bands. One of my favorites were THE ZETTLERS. Check up their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". The recordings were made 1965. It´s raw and honest irresistible good garage rock music with a bloody "drive".
Dead right. They generated an atmosphere and energy that still shines through, with fa money and a mere speck of the tech assistance they could command today.Good comment,Bastard.
The Yardbirds were of their time. Not ahead. All these idiots who pick out bands from the distant past that they like and proclaim them as "ahead of their time" are total and complete idiots.
@FuckngBastard The Yardbirds had pioneering elements that helped lead to heavier rock and metal. They were popular during their time but also made a lot of challenging songs.
@dirtyxmexican I don't think Jimmy Page is in this line up....they went through a few line up changes along the way....I think the guy on bass is Paul Samwell Smith, who was actually one of the founding members and one of the major songwriters.
I wish i was in the 60s. i mean tons of artists were born back then: Jimmy Page, Ringo Starr, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Robert Fripp, Chuck Berry, John Entwistle, Pete Townshend, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, Robert Plant!
I could probably go on and on about the artists who have and still do inspire me!
@1978TVP And how do you think the Yardbirds would sound (live) with the benefit of modern technology ???
This is of its time, and it's ART. You might as well say someone else could have painted a better Mona Lisa 20 years later. Us who were teenagers at the time bought this music, and were moved by it. Really I couldn't care less what later generations think of it.
@THETRUEROCKERCHICK I saw a lot of them live too. We have to be fair to the current generation though, and give them the same chance. My boy plays lead guitar in a band. He like the old stuff too, but times and tastes move on....and especially technology. There is a lot of great new music out there. Nothing wrong with cherishing our memories though, as long as we remember that that is what we're doing, and not knock the new.
@grahamw56 TRUE! I JUST GOT IN A MOOD WHEN I SAW COMMENTS THAT WERE DISGRACEFULL TO THAT WHOLE 60'S GENERATION! RECENTLY SAW JEFF BECK AGAIN LIVE! HE IS STILL ON TOP OF HIS GAME! I GOT A LITTLE RATTLED SORRY ABOUT THAT! ALWAYS WITH RESPECT & LOVE TONI & LITTLE ROCKER CHICK~:-)))
Come on guys, there are two guitarists here, though they never show the guy playing the tele's face. Who played a tele in the yardbirds and Led Zeppelin's first two or three albums? Could this be Jimmy Page???? They never show his face.....
@beamerZ Yes. Relf was 33 when he died from electrocution, at his home, while playing his improperly grounded/earthed electric guitar. At the time, he was rehearsing new material for the regrouping of the original Renaissance line-up, called Illusion.
Clapton left after this song came about, being a blues purist. He recommended Jimmy Page, a prominent studio session guitarist at the time, as his replacement.
The Yardbirds offered Page the place, but he declined due to still being interested in his studio work, and his health on tour. So he recommended Jeff Beck and later joined in 66, and played on bass until Chris Dreja rhythm guitarist at the time, rehearsed enough on bass.
@blueguitarz17 kk jeff beck didn't turn up to a gig so drejja went on bass and page got on lead. For a couple of months page and beck formed a dual lead guitar - like on over under sideways down and happenings ten years time ago. Shame they "fired" beck for missing too many gigs - they could have achieved so much more with page and beck.
This band had tree of the best guitar man of the history, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page

@GWR7200 I believe it was a Guild. Taylor Guitars didn't come out until the 1970s or 1980s.

I'd rather prefer Chilly (1978) and Chocolate Puma feat. Colone (2011) versions than that...

@grahamw56 I SAW ALL THESE BANDS LIVE! THEY WERE BETTER THEN THE MUSIC OF THESE DAYS!
THETRUEROCKERCHICK 3 months ago

Without Jimmy Page, I've no need for the Yardbirds.

Come on guys, there are two guitarists here, though they never show the guy playing the tele's face. Who played a tele in the yardbirds and Led Zeppelin's first two or three albums? Could this be Jimmy Page???? They never show his face.....

Is it true he got electrocuted by his own guitar?
beamerZ 3 months ago
@beamerZ Yes. Relf was 33 when he died from electrocution, at his home, while playing his improperly grounded/earthed electric guitar. At the time, he was rehearsing new material for the regrouping of the original Renaissance line-up, called Illusion.

@BadboyBramley Sorry it is Paul on bass, my mistake.
Keith Relf on vocals/drums
Jeff Beck on rhythm guitar
Paul Samwell-Smith on bass
Chris Dreja on second rhythm guitar
Jim McCarty on drums
Clapton left after this song came about, being a blues purist. He recommended Jimmy Page, a prominent studio session guitarist at the time, as his replacement.

The Yardbirds offered Page the place, but he declined due to still being interested in his studio work, and his health on tour. So he recommended Jeff Beck and later joined in 66, and played on bass until Chris Dreja rhythm guitarist at the time, rehearsed enough on bass.
blueguitarz17 3 months ago
@blueguitarz17 kk jeff beck didn't turn up to a gig so drejja went on bass and page got on lead. For a couple of months page and beck formed a dual lead guitar - like on over under sideways down and happenings ten years time ago. Shame they "fired" beck for missing too many gigs - they could have achieved so much more with page and beck.
BadboyBramley 3 months ago
@BadboyBramley cheers for the info. On Beck, the Yardbirds lost a very versatile guitarist, who when on to be a great diverse guitarist.
