Actually she's wrong. You only have 12-24 hours after the egg is released. The best way to get to the egg before it dies is to have sex BEFORE ovulation, not "7-10 days" later!

You should know about a week and a half from the time you believe you became pregnant. I found I was pregnant with my youngest when I was about a week and a half along by a dollar tree pregnancy test.
