What's said in this scene can be equated in reality with the consequences of crimes against humanity committed by individuals under orders of their masters. Their remorse and their own conscience torments them. They might not like carrying out these orders against fellow human beings but they know the alternative, to disobey, is punishable by death and inevitably another individual will take their place.
I'm speechless...my god, everyword is so true. I have done things I am not proud to admit, but accepting that I cannot undo what I have done and accepting the guilt I deserve is a message I will never forget.
Teal'c once again proves he is one of the most complicated and profound characters of the show and one of the best characters in all of sci-fi. hell, might even be one of the best characters in all of fiction.
Probably the most profound idea I ever heard expressed on the show and casts all of Teal'c's time on the show in a new light. When did he realize that redemption/forgiveness was impossible?
As he said, he heard the voice and tried to put it out of his head while he committed atrocities in the name of his beliefs. Luckily, you and I won't know our beliefs to be fake until we die and see what's waiting. Teal'c and all of his kind had the absolute horror to witness first-hand that he put his faith into an elaborate ruse.
I know the first thought in my head would have been all the vile acts I committed in the name of my false cause.
@DaveRossi2 Not sure, I think it was aaround the episode where he gets trapped in that virtual reality game thing and couldn't win, in the end he realized they can defeat the Goa'ould..together. I think somewhere in the show he realized he may be able to forgive himself, in time.
@aquilascura I think when one realizes like Tomin and Teal'c have that he has been living a lie and serving a lie, there has to be a period of looking for a way to redeem oneself of that shameful past. It is a moment of losing everything you believed about yourself and the world you inhabited. Teal'c empathizes because he sees Tomin starting down a road Teal'c has already travelled.

@DaveRossi2 Teal'c probably knew mcch of this over the years, and, like many things, was only shun into light once he confronted it. He may have thought about it, he is incredibly wise, but this is the first time he's mentioned something like this.
Teal'c is the greatest character in the series given his story, Jackson is incredibly unique, Sam is kind of bad in that her main job is just to be the solution, imo, and Jack was comic relief.
It's amazing that they can take a series so competent of moving scenes like this and then come out with trash like SGU.

I would venture during his tenure as First Prime
As he said, he heard the voice and tried to put it out of his head while he committed atrocities in the name of his beliefs. Luckily, you and I won't know our beliefs to be fake until we die and see what's waiting. Teal'c and all of his kind had the absolute horror to witness first-hand that he put his faith into an elaborate ruse.

@DaveRossi2 he was never looking for forgiveness, he was looking to free his brethren/family/friends/race

@DaveRossi2 but he knows he needs to forgive himself but that's a different matter, but what do we truly know other than he's a legend

It's from the movie Stargate The Ark of Truth. After the 10th SG-1 season.
And IMO the deepest insight into Teal'c ever portrayed.
