Hey! I agree with most of what you said. You are basically trying to match physiological patterns in our brains with our concepts of what social interraction is, However, I think it may not be entirely true that we have any say on who we are "right now". Given a certain activity in your brain one should assume that we also have the ability to change it instantly. Which, I think, maybe too much to ask from our nervous system. I believe it has some sort of intrinsic inertia. ...
holy shit. i had to watch it a few times to get it all in. but this is awesome. I recently reached a turning point in my depression and this is basicly the mindset (1:40 - 2:05) I "accidentally" got myself into. so true. good stuff man. keep it coming =))) <3
But scientifically speaking, thinking of who you want to be right now would go by in even the slightest nanosecond, so that is still the past so thinking of who you want to be at all is gonna be in the past by the time you actually act, so in that case you would need to act imediatley without thought and some how alter your brain waves to be able to make the right moves while in action
@15godfather1 The only reason I watched it twice is because I liked it how he said that... "neuroaivasly activity". ... ... Btw, DeanLeysen... your argument is invalid... I drink, so I exist.
@MisterLepo i see. the thing is nobody really exists because the past is only in our memory and the future in our imagination in other words the only thing that exists is the present but the present continuously transforms into past, ergo the present does not exist, ergo we do not exist :P
@15godfather1 "present continuously transforms into past, ergo the present does not exist" false, the fact that present transforms into the past doesn'tmean that doesn't exist before was transformed into the past. But anyway the past also esists in the 5 th or 6th dimension (in theory)
@dumbnetworks i don't know about these dimensions. of course the present exists before transformed into past. but the time it exists is infinitely small. so it kinda doesn't exist. anyway we both got a point here and it will be very hard to agree on this. glad there still are people there that can talk about this stuff
0:52 ish... Saying we aren't the same person from one moment to the next is kind of silly, if a neuron isn't firing it's having a 0 input to the self fair enough but when I'm not using my right hand it doesn't stop being part of my body.
I find the idea of free will hard to believe because everything we do has some aspect of our brain involved and out brain is affected by physical things such as it is made from your parents' genes and their parents and so on, it is affected by input like the five senses. So everything we are doing can be linked back to the beginning and not necessarily just the big bang. But, I don't know for sure so I live as if I have a choice so i'm safe on both ends.
Well what do you mean by the activity in your brain? I beleive that what makes us who we are is our personal collection of memories. If you change the memories you change the personality.
you are wrong on this one bro... the brain or its neurons do not define a person.. changing the brain does not change the person...it only change the motor of the body and how it process or absorb information of the outside world.
In essence, I think you are right. But you could have elaborated, saying the 'process' or used highways you talk about form our habits, and our habits form our characters, or egos. Change your habits=Change your character=Change who you are. And how does memory fit into the equation? Surely we are not just what processes of our brains are going off right at this minute but rather the summation of all of the processes that our brains ever had? What do you think?
exactly - we as defined people are described by both the past and our personalities, (configurations in neural connections of brain), but the very ourself is only the present, conciousness of the moment
This guy combined philosophy and neurology while he was on cocaine and he vommites out a stream of misunderstandings and failed at the means to satisfy that crazy ending he led up to.
@dergan823 The only reason you can see all this stuff is because you're mind wants you to. It's what you're mind interprets. Ever watch the matrix? If our brain is just a series of electrical inputs (sight, sense, touch, smell) then it wouldn't be all that hard to replicate it. This is how I think we can achieve virtual reality, by making you're brain think you're in another world when you're really not. For all we know, we could be in a virtual reality right now.
Well. I've heard a lot, such as ourselves only being presence. Like, consciousness. All we TRULY are, all that anyone ever IS, TRULY, is consciousness/aliveness. As for everything else it's a game. The game of life. I've also heard that we are children of God, I've heard that we are Gods ourselves.
in one moment my brain part a is working, in other part b. so u can say that you are entirely 2 dif persons in those 2 moments, cuz there is nothing common in those points.
so there is probably not even any ''core'' as he said, where your consciousness all the time lives. and that makes me think about what is consciousness, why it exists and how does it works, and most important - what are essentials to have consciousness.
nice vid. check out gerald edelman if you want some hardcore musings on the physical basis for experience - he explores the thalamacortical loop and it`s role in consciouness as well as a concept known as `neural darwinism` which is fascinating in its own right.

from an enlightened, spiritual perspective, the reason there is no self is because you are just the universe, a larger organism of interactions... all that you are is an interaction with ur environment, thus perception of a self is an illusion
ty for explaining the stuff about "people not existing". im dutch and looked up alot of articles ( in dutch ) about this, but never really understanded it, and now i watch ur video and i imidiately get it =D
the self exists, like each cellph exists. energy can neither b created nor destroyed, so that which animates u now carries on thru reincarnation. however much we may be like our siblings and parents, it's astounding how different we each are from each other, partic within families. this uniqueness is suppressed thru fascism, & fascion, which seeks to homogenize us all. if u knew som'n bout homo'n of milk, it's a scary thought (fragmentation). Assert democracy so diversity is embraced.
I kinda agree on the part about Neural science but i have to disagree with the way he views it. All Those activities in my brain( a-b-c) k-t-j ecs) are all me will always be me so no i am everything that i am thats just my brain at work don't be fooled its all of me.
@Breaking2Silence Its not the way you think of it. If that 99% of empty space were occupied space then things would be compact. If things were compact, then everything would be solid and extremely dense. Common sense?
can you bring back some of the 60 seconds stuff, i love your videos and most of your opinions are like mine.. but sometimes i would like to be able to get lots of information that makes sense in a short amount of time. thanks.
So how do u explain certain people being BORN with a gift for say, playing and understanding the guitar better than another person? And don't tell me genetics, that is bs
how do you change your present day when everybody's present is different.. how do you change the fact that you are a slave to something and that you are starving because the upper people dictate the well being of your life...what happens when you decide to be a different person and suddenly everybody is against it simply because what you were previously... how does that change when you put yourself into action but you cant somehow materialize that action when it is derailed by another action..
Hey Dean! When I was watching this I was thinking about something. I can't remember what it is right now so I'm going to replay this video....
Ok, so when people say that people never change.
This is because people are prone to repeat their own past.
And for every action, there is a reaction.
So do you think that people doing something over and over again through out their life is a reaction to something? Weather it be an event in the past, mimicking ones own parents, or their way of thinking
If we are not the same person because the chemicals in our brain are ever changing thus making us act differently, could i use this theory in court to get off? lol
OHMIGAWD, I DON'T EXIST BUT I DO EXIST I THINK I EXIST AM I THINKING??? OH MY GOD~!!!!! *SHOOTS MY SELF IN THE FACE BECAUSE I DONT REALLY EXIST WHILE EXISTING*
PART 1 Hi, my profession is a hypnotherapist, and dean is correct about you not being the same person because your state of mind changes, in other words your mood. The mind has different rooms in which certain information is stored, such as speech patterns, behavior patterns, information and physical abilities. This explains why sports people need to get into their mood, and why your answers disappear when you take an exam.
Part 2 Because you had the information stored in the learning room, when you take an exam you are in the stress room. The further the room is the harder it is to access the information. Stress and sleeping rooms are the furthest away from your everyday neurological rooms. That's why you often may not remember your dream. What dean mentioned was that you aren't the same person in different states of mind.
Great vid! I like when people get that we're not really singular entities, that it's all little parts networked together to form a macroscopic illusion of a singular entity.
even if theres diffrent neuroactivity you still have the same brain with all that neuroactivity in it so you can basically count it as one being , or am I wrong?
Well, you have defined a human as neural activity so you arae correct , but the thing is neural activity or the way you act/react is controlled or at least stronly influenced by beliefs teachings and overall memory , so if 2 people go through the exact same "lines of code" as you say they will not be executed the same way because , lets say one's a pc (original dude very trustworthy ) and one's a Mac ( spoiled rich kid ) :)
dude youre totally awesome!!!!!! i like these videos because theyre really smart and you have a very general outlook on life so its easy to understand what you mean!!!! your accent is really cute and you seem so comfortable with yourself that i just wanted to jump through the screen and hug you. and if you want to know why im talking like i have a crush on you i dont im just 12 and have no real grammar...sorry!!!

If we are not the same person because the chemicals in our brain are ever changing thus making us act differently, could i use this theory in court to get off? lol

I think you shouldn't go that far and say that you don't exist, because that depends on your definition of existance. Think about that.

PART 1 Hi, my profession is a hypnotherapist, and dean is correct about you not being the same person because your state of mind changes, in other words your mood. The mind has different rooms in which certain information is stored, such as speech patterns, behavior patterns, information and physical abilities. This explains why sports people need to get into their mood, and why your answers disappear when you take an exam.
magicman198765432 7 months ago
Part 2 Because you had the information stored in the learning room, when you take an exam you are in the stress room. The further the room is the harder it is to access the information. Stress and sleeping rooms are the furthest away from your everyday neurological rooms. That's why you often may not remember your dream. What dean mentioned was that you aren't the same person in different states of mind.

Great vid! I like when people get that we're not really singular entities, that it's all little parts networked together to form a macroscopic illusion of a singular entity.

even if theres diffrent neuroactivity you still have the same brain with all that neuroactivity in it so you can basically count it as one being , or am I wrong?
coolnameize 8 months ago
Well, you have defined a human as neural activity so you arae correct , but the thing is neural activity or the way you act/react is controlled or at least stronly influenced by beliefs teachings and overall memory , so if 2 people go through the exact same "lines of code" as you say they will not be executed the same way because , lets say one's a pc (original dude very trustworthy ) and one's a Mac ( spoiled rich kid ) :)
